Colts announce 10 moves at start of 2023 free agency

Here are the 10 moves the Colts announced to begin free agency.

The Indianapolis Colts have been busy making moves since the legal tampering period commenced Monday, which is a different path than we’ve expected from the front office.

Since the start of the legal tampering period, which led into the official start of the new league year, the Colts have announced 10 moves as of this writing. The moves included re-signing four of their own free agents, signing four outside free agents to the roster, cutting a player and trading a player away.

These aren’t the moves we’re accustomed to seeing the Colts make during the first week of free agency but after the team’s struggles over the last few seasons, something about the philosophy had to change.

The one move the Colts made but did not announce yet was the re-signing of wide receiver  and special teamer Ashton Dulin.

Here’s a quick look at the 10 moves the Colts announced during the first wave of free agency:

Tony Brown returns to Indianapolis Colts on one-year deal

Special teams stud, Tony Brown, is set to return for a second stint with the Colts

The NFL career isn’t smooth sailing for everyone, especially for former Alabama Crimson Tide legend [autotag]Tony Brown[/autotag]. With only 53 roster spots on 32 teams, it is a constant battle for jobs and Brown has continued to fight to stay in the league after going undrafted in the 2018 NFL draft.

Brown is known as one of the most charismatic players of the Saban era who played with reckless abandon and no fear. Unfortunately, he has struggled to find a permanent role in the NFL and has bounced around five different teams during his five years in the league.

Things may finally be falling in Brown’s favor though as he will have some stability for the 2023 season. Brown signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts worth $1.2M and $500,000 fully guaranteed after appearing in 16 games for them in 2022. Brown has been an outstanding special teams player so far in the league and will hopefully start seeing more time on defense.

Colts to re-sign CB Tony Brown to one-year deal

Tony Brown is returning to the Colts on a one-year deal.

The Indianapolis Colts are re-signing cornerback Tony Brown after reaching an agreement on a one-year deal Wednesday.

Brown served mostly as a depth piece in the cornerback room while spending most of his time on special teams where he was among the leaders in snaps played for the 2022 season.

Brown’s deal reportedly is for $1.2 million and includes $500,000 guaranteed, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

In 2022, Brown appeared in 16 games (no starts). He recorded seven tackles (two solo), one tackle for loss and one quarterback. His impact came on special teams where he played 72% of the team’s snaps, which trailed only E.J. Speed.

Following the trade that sent starter Stephon Gilmore to the Dallas Cowboys, the Colts are incredibly thin at the cornerback position. The two currently projected starters in the room, Isaiah Rodgers Sr. and Kenny Moore II, are both going into a contract year.

Meanwhile, Moore has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason considering the potential to save a significant amount of salary-cap space.

We should expect the Colts to continue adding to the cornerback room both in free agency and the 2023 NFL draft. Bringing Brown back provides some nice back-end depth but will have more of an impact on special teams.

6 pending free agents the Colts should re-sign

Here are six pending free agents the Colts should re-sign this offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts will soon be entering the new league year in roughly a month and a half but before that, they can begin re-signing some of their pending free agents who are set to hit the market.

While there isn’t a massive list of players set to hit free agency for the Colts in 2023, there are some big names among the group. Unlike previous seasons, the Colts are a bit strapped for cash, sitting with just over $5.7 million in effective cap space, per Over The Cap.

There are a few ways the Colts can free up some cap space by trading and/or cutting certain players in 2023, including the contract of quarterback Matt Ryan.

We took a look at some of the pending free agents the Colts shouldn’t re-sign earlier in the offseason.

Now, it’s time to take a look at six pending free agents the Colts should re-sign:

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Tony Brown suffered a hamstring injury Sunday against the Washington Commanders and was ruled out in the fourth quarter.

It isn’t clear exactly what play the injury happened. Brown has been a key piece of the special teams unit even though he hasn’t seen a whole lot of time on defense.

Colts officially waive Rodrigo Blankenship among several roster moves

The Colts announced several roster moves, including the official waiving of Rodrigo Blankenship.

The Indianapolis Colts officially waived kicker Rodrigo Blankenship among several roster moves, the team announced Tuesday.

Blankenship’s erratic outing in Week 1 was the final straw for the Colts. Not only did he miss the game-winning field-goal attempt from 42 yards, but he also proved to be a liability on kickoffs.

The Colts brought in two kickers to the practice squad while making a number of moves Tuesday. Here’s a look:

Colts elevate CB Tony Brown to active roster

The Colts elevated CB Tony Brown from the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated cornerback Tony Brown from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of the Week 1 matchup with the Houston Texans, the team announced Saturday.

Brown will serve as the sixth cornerback in the room, joining Stephon Gilmore, Kenny Moore II, Brandon Facyson, Isaiah Rodgers and undrafted rookie Dallis Flowers.

Brown was competing for the final spot in the cornerback room throughout training camp and the preseason. He made the initial roster but was waived when the Colts made a waiver claim of offensive tackle Luke Tenuta. Brown was then signed to the practice squad.

Former Alabama DB Tony Brown released and re-signed to Colts practice squad

Former Alabama DB Tony Brown will join the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad. He has been in the NFL since 2018.

On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts waived former Alabama defensive back, Tony Brown. Soon after, he was re-signed to the team’s practice squad. Last season, Brown spent time on the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad.

Brown spent four seasons at Alabama where he played in 38 games. He went on to record 79 tackles and three interceptions. After his career at Alabama, Brown went on to the NFL where he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Since entering the league in 2018, Brown has played for four different teams. Throughout his career, he has played in 33 games. All of his playing time came with the Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals. His professional career has consisted of him playing primarily on the special teams unit. Nonetheless, he has still recorded 58 tackles and two forced fumbles.

After starring for the Colts during the preseason, he was initially added to the 53-man roster. However, he was released soon after. He has since been re-signed by the Colts as a member of the team’s practice squad.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to track Brown’s professional career as well as other former Alabama players in the NFL.

Colts sign OT Dennis Kelly, place S Trevor Denbow on IR

The Colts brought Dennis Kelly back to the roster and placed S Trevor Denbow on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackle Dennis Kelly, placed safety Trevor Denbow on the injured reserve list, and signed cornerback Tony Brown to the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

Denbow was seen wearing a boot on his foot Wednesday as the Colts returned to practice following the conclusion of the preseason. General manager Chris Ballard told the media at his press conference that Denbow would hit the injured reserve list.

He doesn’t believe the injury to be serious, but it will keep the undrafted rookie off the field for a while.

“Yeah, we’ll make a corresponding move today. I’ll go ahead and tell you, he’s going to go to IR. We’ll see when he gets back,” Ballard said. “I don’t know exactly the timeframe. I don’t think it’s the whole year, but he’ll go to IR today.”

Bringing back Kelly is a relatively big deal for the Colts. Their initial 53-man roster lacked severe depth at right tackle. They have tried to correct that by claiming Luke Tenuta off waivers from the Buffalo Bills and by signing Kelly.

The veteran Kelly missed almost all of training camp and the entirety of preseason due to a knee injury. He had a procedure done at the start of training camp, but it appears he’s close to returning.

The Colts also brought Brown back to the practice squad. He initially survived the final roster cuts but was released Wednesday when the team claimed Tenuta.

After these moves, the Colts are currently carrying 10 offensive linemen and five cornerbacks on the active roster.

9 Colts to watch vs. Bills in preseason opener

Here are nine players to watch in the Colts’ preseason opener.

The Indianapolis Colts kick off the preseason with a matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.

As the Colts prepare to get their starting units ready for Week 1 of the regular season, they will be doing so against a Bills team that isn’t expected to play starting quarterback Josh Allen.

That doesn’t mean much to the Colts, who have several players looking to come hot out of the gates during the preseason opener.

Here are nine Colts players to watch in the preseason opener against the Bills:
