Panthers DT Shy Tuttle remains out of practice on Thursday

A foot injury has kept DT Shy Tuttle out of practice for the second consecutive day.

The Carolina Panthers probably won’t have another one of their opening-day starting defensive linemen in Week 3.

Nose tackle Shy Tuttle remained out of practice on Thursday due to a foot injury. The 28-year-old defender, who is in his second season with the Panthers, was also a non-participant for yesterday’s session.

Line mate A’Shawn Robinson, however, did return to the practice field after also sitting Wednesday out. Robinson (knee) was listed as a limited participant.

Carolina is already without Pro Bowl defensive lineman Derrick Brown, who will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn meniscus.

Panthers hold out 3 defensive starters from Wednesday’s practice

Panthers starting defensive linemen A’Shawn Robinson and Shy Tuttle were out of practice on Wednesday due to injuries.

Taking away Pro Bowler Derrick Brown for the rest of the season seemingly may not be enough for the injury bug—as it’s now come for the rest of the Carolina Panthers’ starting defensive line.

A’Shawn Robinson (knee) and Shy Tuttle (foot) both missed Wednesday’s practice, the first ahead of the team’s Week 3 visit to see the Las Vegas Raiders. Outside of Brown, Robinson and Tuttle, the Panthers are currently carrying three other defensive linemen on their active roster (Nick Thurman, LaBryan Ray and Jayden Peevy) and two on their practice squad (DeShawn Williams and T.J. Smith).

Starting outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney was also held out. But, as was the case last Wednesday, the 11th-year veteran was just taking a rest day.

Panthers Week 2 inactives: 6 players ruled out vs. Chargers

All of Friday’s questionable Panthers will be in uniform for the home opener.

The questionables are questionable no more.

Friday’s injury report ahead of the Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers featured five players the Carolina Panthers deemed as questionable. But, as expected, all five will be in uniform this afternoon.

Included in the bunch is starting tight end Tommy Tremble, who is on track to make his 2024 debut today. Rookie and fourth-round pick Ja’Tavion Sanders got the start in last week’s regular-season opener in place of Tremble, who has been dealing with hamstring and back issues.

Along with Tremble, the Panthers will also have running back and return specialist Raheem Blackshear (personal), left guard Damien Lewis (groin), outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (ankle) and punter Johnny Hekker (back).

Here, however, are the six inactives for Carolina:

  • RB Mike Boone
  • TE Messiah Swinson
  • G Jarrett Kingston
  • C Andrew Raym
  • CB Shemar Bartholomew
  • CB Chau Smith-Wade

And for Los Angeles . . .

  • QB Taylor Heinicke
  • RB Kimani Vidal
  • WR Brenden Rice
  • OL Jordan McFadden
  • DL Justin Eboigbe
  • CB Tarheeb Still
  • S Alohi Gilman

Panthers elevate practice squad member for Week 2 matchup vs. Chargers

The Panthers have elevated TE Feleipe Franks from the practice squad ahead of their home opener against the Chargers.

The Carolina Panthers made just one call-up from the practice squad this weekend.

As announced on Saturday afternoon, the team has elevated tight end Feleipe Franks ahead of tomorrow’s home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. This will be the 26-year-old’s second consecutive game in uniform to start the 2024 campaign.

His first, last Sunday’s season-opening loss to the New Orleans Saints, came as a member of the team’s 53-man roster. He recorded four snaps on offense and 17 on special teams, where he recovered a muffed punt towards the end of the 47-10 defeat.

Franks would then be waived by the Panthers the very next day. He’d return as a member of the practice squad on Wednesday.

With starter Tommy Tremble listed as questionable with injuries to his hamstring and back, Franks will provide some depth at the tight end position for Carolina. But that depth is likelier to be considered insurance, as head coach Dave Canales told reporters on Friday that he expects Tremble to make his season debut.

Panthers Week 2 injury report: 5 players questionable for home opener vs. Chargers

A handful of Panthers are listed as questionable for Sunday’s home opener against the Chargers.

The Carolina Panthers have a handful of question marks entering their home opener this weekend.

Friday’s injury report, the final listing ahead of the Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, deemed five players as questionable for Sunday. Those players include running back and return specialist Raheem Blackshear (personal), tight end Tommy Tremble (hamstring/back), starting right tackle Taylor Moton (knee), starting right guard Damien Lewis (groin) and punter Johnny Hekker (back).

Head coach Dave Canales, however, told reporters following today’s practice that he expects all of the questionables to play.

Five others were down without injury designations for the contest. That bunch included veteran wideout Adam Thielen, who was a full participant despite being added to the report this afternoon.

Panthers add starting ILB Josey Jewell to injury report on Thursday

The Panthers added three players to their injury report on Thursday, including ILB Josey Jewell.

The Carolina Panthers added a trio of new faces to their Week 2 injury report on Thursday. Only one, however, could be a cause for concern.

Starting inside linebacker Josey Jewell popped up on this afternoon’s listing with a groin issue. The seventh-year veteran was down as a limited participant for today’s practice.

Jewell’s addition was joined by that of offensive tackle Taylor Moton and running back/return specialist Raheem Blackshear. Both absences, however, were not injury-related—as Moton received rest and Blackshear was away due to personal reasons.

In a bit of good news, three players received a bump in their statuses—offensive tackle Yosh Nijman, outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney and punter Johnny Hekker.

Panthers TE Tommy Tremble returns to practice on Wednesday

After missing Sunday’s opener, Panthers TE Tommy Tremble returned to the practice field this afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers really could’ve used some good news after learning that they’ve lost Pro Bowl defensive lineman Derrick Brown for the season. And fortunately, they got a little light on Wednesday.

Starting tight end Tommy Tremble, who missed Sunday’s regular-season opener due to a hamstring injury, returned to the practice field this afternoon. In addition to Tremble, the 47-10 loss did not feature fellow tight end Ian Thomas—one of nine Panthers currently on an injured reserve list.

In Tremble’s place was rookie Ja’Tavion Sanders, who received the starting nod in his NFL debut. The 2024 fourth-round pick recorded one catch for four yards.

Carolina, however, did not have outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (ankle) and punter Johnny Hekker (back) down as participants for today’s session.

Here is the first injury report of the week ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers:

Panthers Week 1 inactives: 7 players deactivated for opener vs. Saints

The Panthers named seven inactives for their regular-season opener in New Orleans.

The Carolina Panthers have listed seven inactives ahead of this afternoon’s regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Those players are as follows:

  • CB Shemar Bartholomew
  • G Jarrett Kingston
  • DL LaBryan Ray
  • C Andrew Raym
  • S Jammie Robinson
  • TE Messiah Swinson
  • TE Tommy Tremble

With Tremble down due to a hamstring injury and Ian Thomas now on injured reserve with a lingering calf issue, the Panthers are expected to start rookie tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders in what will be his first official NFL game. The fourth-round pick earned rave reviews from head coach Dave Canales earlier this summer.

“So JT is taking those steps that we’re looking for,” Canales said of the 21y-year-old during training camp. “Made a big play at Fan Fest to end it, to end the scrimmage on a corner. Had a couple nice plays today, nice catches. He’s doin’ it. He’s making the most of his opportunity. It’s pushed him right up with that first group, to be able to show the guys you can count on him and he’s been really dependable with that.”

Sanders will be backed by veteran Jordan Matthews and Feleipe Franks, who was signed to the active roster on Saturday.

Panthers place TE Ian Thomas on injured reserve

Panthers TE Ian Thomas will miss at least the next four weeks due to his calf injury.

The Carolina Panthers will be without tight end Ian Thomas for more than just their regular-season opener.

As announced by on Saturday afternoon, Thomas has been placed on injured reserve due to a lingering calf issue. The seventh-year passer, who was already ruled out for Sunday’s Week 1 matchup against the New Orleans Saints, will now miss at least the next four weeks.

Thomas is just the latest Panther to hit the shelf, as the team is entering the 2024 campaign with a handful of injuries. Carolina now has five players on injured reserve (Thomas, defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy, cornerbacks Anthony Brown and Dane Jackson and safety Sam Franklin Jr.), two players on the reserve/physically unable to perform list (outside linebackers Amaré Barno and D.J. Wonnum) and one player on the reserve/non-football injury list (running back Jonathon Brooks).

Fellow tight end Tommy Tremble will also miss tomorrow’s opener due to a hamstring injury.

Rookie Ja’Tavion Sanders is slated to get the start in his NFL debut.

Panthers rookie TE Ja’Tavion Sanders to start in Week 1 vs. Saints

Panthers HC Dave Canales confirmed that rookie TE Ja’Tavion Sanders will get the start in Sunday’s regular-season opener.

On Friday, the Carolina Panthers released their final injury report ahead of this weekend’s regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints. And, as expected, starting tight ends Tommy Tremble (hamstring/back) and Ian Thomas (calf) have been ruled out after missing each of this week’s practices.

Also as expected, their absences has opened the door for rookie Ja’Tavion Sanders to get the start at the position on Sunday. Head coach Dave Canales confirmed the nod following this afternoon’s session.

This, obviously, means the 21-year-old tight end is set to start in what will be his very first regular-season game in the NFL. Sanders earned the honor through his eye-opening offseason.

“It’s exponential growth, every day,” Canales said of Sanders during training camp. “What I’ve seen him do is just kinda really take big leaps in the techniques. And you’ll see that with young guys. You’ll see big leaps, and then you wanna get them to the point where it’s consistent. And then we take our incremental growth—just like some of the veteran guys who have been around.

“So JT is taking those steps that we’re looking for. Made a big play at Fan Fest to end it, to end the scrimmage on a corner. Had a couple nice plays today, nice catches. He’s doin’ it. He’s making the most of his opportunity. It’s pushed him right up with that first group, to be able to show the guys you can count on him and he’s been really dependable with that.”

Carolina selected Sanders to kick off the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft. Over his last two years at the University of Texas, he recorded 99 receptions for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns en route to a pair of First-Team All-Big 12 selections.

Sanders is currently joined at the position by 32-year-old veteran Jordan Matthews, the only other healthy tight end on the active roster. The Panthers can also promote Feleipe Franks from the practice squad to give themselves some depth.
