Titans TE Tommy Hudson carted off with injury; K Caleb Shudak also hurt

A pair of Titans suffered injuries during the latest open session of OTAs.

The Tennessee Titans held their last open session of organized team activities on Tuesday and a pair of players suffered injuries during it.

Titans tight end Tommy Hudson was carted off the field with an apparent leg injury after slipping. Undrafted free agent kicker Caleb Shudak appeared to suffer a right leg injury after attempting a kick.

The severity of both injuries are not yet known.

Hudson is one of the players competing for a backup tight end spot and is someone we’ve pegged as a favorite to land the No.4 role behind Austin Hooper, Geoff Swaim and Chigoziem Okonkwo.

A 2020 undrafted free agent signing, Hudson made Tennessee’s initial 53-man roster in 2021 but saw his season end early due to an ankle injury.

Shudak, who was off to a great start since being signed following the draft, is looking to unseat last year’s starter Randy Bullock, and has been neck-and-neck with him thus far.

Titans sign Kyle Peko to active roster among four moves

Peko earned one of the highest grades on defense in the Titans’ Week 10 win over the Saints.

The Tennessee Titans made four moves ahead of practice on Wednesday, one of which included signing defensive lineman Kyle Peko to the active roster.

Peko, who was previously on the Titans’ practice squad, played 23 snaps in the team’s Week 10 win against the New Orleans Saints. He registered the second-best overall Pro Football Focus grade on defense, and the best run defense mark.

In addition to that move, the Titans are bringing back offensive lineman Bobby Hart and defensive lineman Amani Bledsoe on the practice squad. Both players were waived from the active roster on Monday.

Finally, the Titans have designated tight end Tommy Hudson to return from Injured Reserve. A 2020 undrafted free agent signing of the Titans, Hudson has played in three games this season but hasn’t suited up since Week 4.

The Titans will return to practice on Wednesday in preparation for their Week 11 matchup against the Houston Texans at Nissan Stadium on Sunday.

Titans promote TE Tommy Hudson to active roster

The move comes on the heels of the Titans ruling TE Anthony Firkser out for Week 3.

The Tennessee Titans made a roster move on Friday, promoting tight end Tommy Hudson to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

The move comes on the heels of the team ruling out fellow tight end Anthony Firkser (knee) for the Week 3 contest against the Indianapolis Colts. This is the second straight game Firkser will miss.

With Firkser out and Hudson promoted, the Titans will have three tight ends active for Sunday, with MyCole Pruitt and Geoff Swaim being the others.

Pruitt in particular shined in Week 2. Not only did he make an impact as a blocker, he was also productive in the passing game, securing all three of his targets for 43 yards in the 33-30 overtime win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Swaim and Pruitt will see the majority of snaps at the position on Sunday, with Hudson mixing in here and there. Tennessee and Indianapolis are set for a noon CT kickoff at Nissan Stadium.

Titans put Amani Hooker on IR, promote Randy Bullock to active roster

The Titans will give kicker Randy Bullock a try in Week 2.

The Tennessee Titans made a pair of roster and practice squad moves on Tuesday, one of which includes placing one of their starting safeties on Injured Reserve.

The Titans announced that safety Amani Hooker has been placed on IR, which means he’ll miss at least the next three games. Hooker came down with a foot injury during the Week 1 loss against the Arizona Cardinals.

It appears that kicker Randy Bullock is the next man up at the position, as he was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad.

Bullock takes the place of recently-released kicker Michael Badgley, who filled in for injured kicker Sam Ficken in Week 1 but lasted just one game after missing a field goal and extra point on Sunday.

Bullock is the latest kicker to try his luck in Nashville. The veteran spent the 2020 campaign with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he converted on 21 of his 26 field goal attempts over 12 games.

The Titans added a pair of tight ends to the practice squad as well with the signings of Tommy Hudson and Austin Fort. Hudson was originally on the 53-man roster before being waived from it on Monday.

Fort played his college ball at Wyoming, where he transitioned from quarterback to tight end. The 6-foot-4, 244-pound tight end was an undrafted free agent signing of the Denver Broncos in 2019 but missed his first two seasons in the NFL due to injury.

Titans’ Tommy Hudson an early favorite for a backup TE role

Tommy Hudson, who spent all of 2020 on the practice squad, received praise from Mike Vrabel.

As the Tennessee Titans try and sort out who will be the starter at tight end in 2021 between Anthony Firkser and Geoff Swaim, there are a slew of young, inexperienced players vying for what figures to be two spots behind them.

One of those tight ends is Tommy Hudson, an undrafted free agent signing of the Titans in 2020 who spent all of last season on the practice squad but didn’t see any action.

Hudson’s first season did come with a hiccup, though, as the Arizona State product was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances

However, the fact that the Titans stuck with him despite that says that they at least see something in him, and that’s a big reason why we’ve projected Hudson to make the cut as one of the team’s backup tight ends.

After practice on Thursday, Titans head coach Mike Vrabel praised the second-year player, noting that he has improved a lot and is standing out because of his work on special teams.

When it comes to their backup tight ends, Tennessee will likely be looking for players who can excel as blockers and on special teams, two boxes Hudson appears to check.

So, while he didn’t show much as a receiver during his days in college (25 receptions for 205 yards in 20 games), we don’t think that’ll necessarily be the difference between his making the roster or not.

Another thing Hudson has over the rest of the Titans’ options — Jared Pinkney, Briley Moore, and Miller Forristall — is that he already has experience with the team’s offense.

In our last 53-man roster projection, we have Hudson and Pinkney making the cut, with Moore or Forristall ending up on the practice squad.

We’d suggest keeping an eye on Moore, though, as his Relative Athletic Score was one of the highest among all tight ends in the 2021 draft class.

Titans put 3 players on COVID-19 list, add 2 to practice squad

The Titans have put three players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Tennessee Titans have placed three of their players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced on Tuesday.

The three players are long snapper Beau Brinkley, defensive lineman DaQuan Jones and practice squad tight end and 2020 UDFA, Tommy Hudson.

This comes on the heels of the news that three Titans players and five personnel tested positive for COVID-19 in what is the first outbreak of the 2020 NFL season.

We would assume the aforementioned players are the ones who tested positive, but that hasn’t exactly been confirmed yet.

As a result of the outbreak, the Titans’ facilities will be closed until at least Saturday, and the status of the Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers remains up in the air.

The NFL reportedly intends to still play the game on Sunday, but there is a possibility the game gets moved to either Monday or Tuesday, according to reports.

In other news, the Titans officially added running back D’Onta Foreman and defensive back Maurice Smith to the practice squad.
