Former Titans LB Rashaan Evans, LS Beau Brinkley sign with Falcons

Former Titans Rashaan Evans and Beau Brinkley are signing with the Falcons on one-year deals.

After a couple of visits with other teams, former Tennessee Titans linebacker Rashaan Evans is on the move, reaching an agreement on a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, per multiple reports.

Evans now will be reunited with Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, and defensive coordinator Dean Pees, who coached him in Tennessee.

The writing was on the wall for the 26-year-old when the Titans declined to pick up his fifth-year option prior to the 2021 season. Barring a miraculous season, Evans was likely to become a free agent at season’s end.

The Alabama product was limited to 12 games in 2021, accumulating 57 combined tackles, including three tackles for loss. He also took a backseat to Zach Cunningham after he was brought in via waivers.

Despite collecting two interceptions last year, Evans struggled in pass coverage across four seasons in Nashville. Most recently, he allowed a 76 percent completion rate and an 82.2 QB rating in 2021.

Drafted 22nd overall in the 2018 NFL draft, Evans joins several other first-round picks who didn’t stick in Tennessee after their rookie contract. He’ll look to carve out a role for himself in Atlanta under a familiar face in Pees.

Evans will be joined by long snapper Beau Brinkley, who also agreed to a one-year deal with the Falcons on Monday. The 32-year-old is expected to replace long-time snapper Josh Harris in Atlanta.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2021, Brinkley spent nine seasons with the Titans. He earned Pro Bowl honors three times and was a two-time All-Pro with Tennessee.

His time in Nashville ended in November 2020 after he struggled with snaps following a stint on the COVID-19 list, and was later released.

In 2021, Brinkley spent time on the practice squads of the Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers, but only saw the field with Arizona, where he played in three games before being released.

The Chicago Bears added him to their practice squad in February, but he was released in mid-March.

Not only are Brinkley and Evans reuniting with a pair of former Titans coaches, but also former teammate, Marcus Mariota, who signed a two-year deal with Atlanta last month.

Falcons sign long snapper Beau Brinkley to one-year deal

Brinkley 32, played nine seasons for the Tennessee Titans (2012-2020) before landing in Arizona in 2021.

The Atlanta Falcons lost their Pro Bowl long snapper, Josh Harris, to the Los Angeles Chargers at the start of free agency, and on Monday, the team signed veteran Beau Brinkley to a one-year deal.

Brinkley 32, played nine seasons for the Tennessee Titans (2012-2020), before landing in Arizona in 2021. He was signed the Bears back in February but released in March.

Bears release LS Beau Brinkley

After re-signing long snapper Patrick Scales, the Bears have released Beau Brinkley.

The Chicago Bears have finally made a roster move on Day 4 of free agency action. But it’s not one that’s likely to garner much attention.

The Bears have released long snapper Beau Brinkley, the team announced Thursday. The move comes after Chicago re-signed long snapper Patrick Scales to a one-year, $1,272,500 veteran benefit deal.

Brinkley had a nine-year stint with the Tennessee Titans from 2012-2020. He joined the Titans as an undrafted free agent and earned two contract extensions with the team. Since then, he’s had practice squad stints with the Detroit Lions, Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers.

In his seven-year career, Scales has appeared in 88 games as a long snapper with the Ravens (2014) and Bears (2015-21), where he recorded eight special teams tackles. He’s been a reliable option for Chicago.

With Scales and kicker Cairo Santos in place, the only question is who will be the punter heading into 2022. Pat O’Donnell signed with the Green Bay Packers. While Chicago does have Ryan Winslow under contract, that’s not to say he’s going to be their punter when the 2022 season kicks off.

Bears sign LS Beau Brinkley, P Ryan Winslow

The Bears made a couple of special teams moves signing LS Beau Brinkley and P Ryan Winslow to the roster.

The Chicago Bears made a couple of special teams moves signing punter Ryan Winslow and long snapper Beau Brinkley to the active roster, the team announced Wednesday.

Winslow was an undrafted free agent by the Bears in 2018, and he was part of final roster cuts later that training camp. Since then, Winslow has been quite the journeyman. He’s spent time with seven different teams since 2019, including the Arizona Cardinals (three times), Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers. Winslow spent most of his NFL career on the practice squad.

Brinkley has a little more NFL experience, including a nine-year stint with the Tennessee Titans from 2012-2020. He joined the Titans as an undrafted free agent and earned two contract extensions with the team. Since then, he’s had practice squad stints with the Detroit Lions, Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers.

Punter Pat O’Donnell and long snapper Patrick Scales, who have both been with the team for the last few years, are slated to hit the free-agent market next month. There was always a possibility that both wouldn’t return in 2022, and that looks like it very well might be the case.

Winslow and Brinkley join kicker Cairo Santos as the special teams players currently under contract ahead of free agency.

Cardinals protect four on practice squad for Week 13, including 2 CBs

With this week’s practice squad protections, it makes us wonder if there is an injury in the cornerback room for the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals’ first injury report of the week for Week 13 does not come out until Wednesday afternoon, but they could be looking at some concern for their depth at cornerback.

Why?

The team protected four players on the practice squad this week and two of them are cornerbacks.

According to Tuesday’s NFL transaction report, the Cardinals protected these four players:

  • Long snapper Beau Brinkley
  • Linebacker Tahir Whitehead
  • Cornerback Jace Whittaker
  • Cornerback Kevin Peterson

Brinkley is a no-brainer, as he is the only long snapper on the roster. Whitehead was elevated in Week 11 and played special teams.

Whittaker has played on special teams this season when elevated. Peterson was elevated once but was not active.

But with two cornerbacks protected, it makes one wonder if there is an injury to the four active cornerbacks — Byron Murphy, Robert Alford, Marco Wilson, Antonio Hamilton. If Hamilton is hurt, they would need someone to fill his role on special teams.

If one of the three starters is hurt, Hamilton would slide into the playing rotation on defense and then his role would still need to be filled on special teams.

So we will keep an eye on the injury report to see if there is an extra reason to protect the cornerbacks this week.

Cardinals release LS Kyle Nelson from practice squad

Despite three missed kicks in Week 11, the Cardinals will continue to go with Beau Brinkley as the replacement long snapper while Aaron Brewer is out.

After long snapper Aaron Brewer was placed on injured reserve for a fractured arm, they initially signed Kyle Nelson to the practice squad to replace him. However, he got hurt in his first practice and landed on the practice squad injured reserve and the team signed Beau Brinkley to replace him.

It appears the Cardinals will move forward with Brinkley.

On Tuesday’s NFL transactions report, it noted that the Cardinals had terminated the practice squad contract of Nelson. His knee injury apparently is better and the Cardinals will stick with Brinkley.

Brinkley remains on the practice squad but has been protected by the team this week, so he cannot be signed by any other team to their roster.

At the end of the week, he will be either signed or elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game.

Hopefully, things go better this week than against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11. Kicker Matt Prater missed three kicks — two field goals and an extra point — and the snap was a factor in two of them.

With a full week of practice for this game, that should get cleaned up.

Cardinals re-sign Tavien Feaster, Beau Brinkley to practice squad, announce Trace McSorley signing

The reported signing of McSorley is now official.

It was reported Monday that the Arizona Cardinals were signing quarterback Trace McSorley from the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad to their active roster and releasing quarterback Chris Streveler.

The Cardinals made those moves official Tuesday, announcing the signing and release of both players.

They also brought back a pair of players to their own practice squad.

Running back Tavien Feaster and long snapper Beau Brinkley, both released Monday, cleared waivers and were re-signed to the practice squad.

The re-signing of Brinkley is significant because it means the team has not given up on him after, at least on one kick, his less-than-perfect snaps contributed to three missed kicks on Sunday by Matt Prater.

McSorley is now the latest developmental third-string quarterback the Cardinals have had on the team since Kliff Kingsbury became head coach. First it was Drew Anderson, then it was Streveler and now it is McSorley.

Cardinals release RB Tavien Feaster, LS Beau Brinkley

The release of Brinkley perhaps signals the team is ready for a different long snapper after three missed Matt Prater kicks on Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals made some roster moves Monday that were not announced but appeared on the NFL transaction report. Two were simply procedural, as linebackers Joe Walker and Tahir Whitehead, both of whom were elevated to the active roster from the practice squad Saturday as standard elevations, reverted back to the practice squad.

They also released two players. They waived running back Tavien Feaster and long snapper Beau Brinkley.

This doesn’t necessarily mean both are done with the team.

Feaster was signed to the roster in Week 10, released on the Monday following the Cardinals’ game and then re-signed to the practice squad after he cleared waivers. Considering the uncertain status of Jonathan Ward and his concussion, that could happen again.

However, the fact that Brinkley was released after kicker Matt Prater missed three kicks — two field goals and an extra point — raises questions.

Kyle Nelson was the first long snapper they signed after Aaron Brewer fractured his arm. He then was placed on the practice squad injured reserve. If he is ready to return, then Brinkley might be done.

But we will see in the days to come and then perhaps into next week when they have practices prepping for a football game after the bye.

Cardinals protect four on practice squad in Week 11

One surprise protection is veteran linebacker Tahir Whitehead.

The Arizona Cardinals can protect up to four players on the practice squad from being sign to the active roster of another team. Since they have no long snapper currently on the active roster, one of the four they protected is obviously long snapper Beau Brinkley.

He wasn’t the only one.

According to the NFL transaction list, the Cardinals protected four players:

  • LS Beau Brinkley
  • DL Josh Mauro
  • LB Joe Walker
  • LB Tahir Whitehead

Brinkley is no surprise. Mauro isn’t necessarily one, although with six defensive linemen already on the roster, perhaps we will find out about an injury to one of those players when the first injury report is released.

Walker has been playing on special teams.

The interesting protection is Whitehead, a veteran linebacker.

Rookie linebacker Zaven Collins has seemingly lost his spot in the playing rotation to Tanner Vallejo, but Vallejo left the game on Sunday with an injury.

Whitehead has started 95 games in the NFL, so the Cardinals perhaps will turn to him if Vallejo has to miss any time.

Lions swap out recent practice squad moves

Javon McKinley is back again amongst the Lions’ practice squad moves

Monday’s transaction notification from the Detroit Lions required some careful reading. It was easy to do a double-take and wonder if they mistakenly sent out the same press release that they did over the weekend.

It wasn’t the same, alas. Monday’s practice squad moves were the exact opposite of the ones that went down on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Lions added long snapper Beau Brinkley and punter Lac Edwards to the practice squad and released wide receiver Javon McKinley and tight end Jared Pinkney. Monday’s move brought back McKinley and Pinkney and spelled the end for the brief tenures of Brinkley and Edwards.

The moves on Saturday were made as insurance against a COVID-19 situation. With regular kicker Austin Seibert out due to COVID, the Lions were careful to have backups at the ready. Now that they weren’t needed, the team moved on from the veteran specialists and brought back the two young receivers.
