Fantasy football free agency roundup

NFL free agency will drastically help reshape the fantasy football landscape as the new league year begins.

Now that NFL free agency is upon us, here is where we’ll run through the fantasy football outlooks for trades, re-signings, midrange players, and tag recipients.

This analysis will be updated as players sign/re-sign in free agency, so be sure to check back regularly.

Signed with new team or traded

RB Mark Ingram, Houston Texans: The 31-year-old inked a one-year, $2.5 million deal in Houston to pair with fellow well-aged runner David Johnson. The duo will create a one-two punch, so long as what we saw from Baltimore making Ingram a healthy scratch late last year wasn’t foreshadowing. Some of that was due to him not playing special teams and the team wanting to get a closer look at rookie J.K. Dobbins. Presuming quarterback Deshaun Watson returns, Ingram still has a dicey outlook. The Texans’ porous defense has so many needs that it’s tough to see the offense being able to consistently run the ball if the other side cannot contain opposing offenses. Ingram needs bulk to make a mark in fantasy lineups, which rarely will be the case, unless he finds regular success around the goal line, consider the veteran merely roster depth or a handcuff to Johnson.

Re-signed/extensions

QB Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys: There’s no surprise associated with the four-year, $160 million extension Prescott signed prior to free agency opening. He wasn’t ever going to be allowed to leave the building, as evidenced by a formality of being tagged again. As long as his ankle rehab goes according to plan, this potential No. 1 overall fantasy quarterback has the tools to pick up where he left off.

QB Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers:While it’s technically an extension, Big Ben’s deal was reworked to provide cap relief for the Steelers and keep him in a black-and-yellow uni for one last go of it. Roethlisberger will almost assuredly be without WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Pittsburgh has a new offensive coordinator in Matt Canada, but there’s still enough to like about the situation for Roethlisberger to be in the conversation of a low-tier rotational starter.

QB Cam Newton, New England Patriots: The knee-jerk reaction is to scoff at Newton getting a one-year, $14 million deal to re-sign with the Pats. A closer look should elicit a more measured response. Last year, just about everything worked against Cam finding success. He signed late (June 28), there was no offseason program, the offensive system is intricate, New England lost several key players to the opt-out, the offensive line had to shuffle talent several times, no receivers to speak of, zero tight ends of consequence, an erratic rushing attack, and Newton was returning from foot surgery prior to joining New England. Excuses, you may say … perhaps, but all of those factors are undeniable reality. Newton is finally healthy after three straight offseasons of rehabbing from surgery. Wait to see how the Patriots address wide receiver and tight end concerns, but it’s unwise to entirely dismiss a rebound by Newton.

[lawrence-related id=457182]

QB Taylor Heinicke, Washington Football Team: The former Panther parlayed an admirable playoff start into a two-year extension in Washington. He knows the system and the brain trust’s nucleus from his time in Carolina. Alex Smith’s release opens the door for Heinicke to compete for a starting job while having the upper hand against a newcomer who won’t be as familiar with the playbook. It’s unlikely, however, Heinicke is the season-long starter for this offense as an incoming rookie or free-agent acquisition will have that momentum on his side.

Franchise/transition tagged

WR Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: No one paying attention expected the Buccaneers to allow Godwin to walk into free agency. Look for a stronger showing in 2021 after an injury-pocked season a year ago derailed Godwin’s campaign from nearly the onset. He’s a legit WR2 in all settings, but his upside is capped at that position overall with the bevy of talent around him in the passing game.

WR Allen Robinson, Chicago Bears: It seemed for quite some time that Chicago wouldn’t have the cap space to tag Robinson, but he was indeed slapped with the tender of $17-plus million for 2021. While he would like a long-term deal, and the team may still yet find a way to meet his demands by July 15, there also remains a chance this could get ugly. Robinson doesn’t want to play on the tag, nor must he sign the tender. He then wouldn’t play or get paid, so there’s that, and $17.89 mill is nothing to sneeze at during an offseason in which the salary cap actually goes down. At 27, Robinson could put his John Hancock on the offer sheet and still hit free agency in 2022 young enough to get one last shot at a huge deal when teams will have more money to throw around. Long story short, he mostly is quarterback-proof, but Chicago still needs to put a better product on the field. Whether it is Nick Foles or someone else under center in 2021, A-Rob is a viable PPR WR1 with a hint of downside.

Scouting the most important offensive players available in NFL free agency this year

Allen Robinson, Will Fuller, Chris Godwin, Cam Newton, and others headline a free agency class littered with big names.

The NFL offseason is fully upon us. Most fans — even Jaguars and Jets fans! (but not Texans fans) — can dare to dream that their team will make the right moves and push into contention for a run at the Super Bowl.

There’s no scouting combine in Indianapolis this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, so we’ll have to gather workout stats for draft prospects as they come out of on-campus workouts.

That leaves a lot of time to focus on free agency. It’s going to be an interesting year for that, as the salary cap has also been impacted by revenues lost due to the pandemic. The league has announced it will be no lower than $180 million, but that’s a far drop from $198 million for last year — especially since most teams plan as if the cap will continue to rise by about $10 million per year.

So market forces are going to make contracts look a little different this year. What won’t change: teams have a real chance to make franchise-altering signings.

Some of the players listed below could end up being tagged and forced to stay where they are. Teams can start using franchise or transition tags on Feb. 23 and have until March 9 to do so.

After that, the “legal tampering” period runs from March 15-17, so we’ll hear about deals being agreed to then, and the new league year begins on the 17th, allowing deals to be officially signed.

Today we’re taking a look at the top offensive players available, and this class has everything: A ton of star receivers, talented quarterbacks with question marks, a few stud offensive linemen, and even over-the-hill running backs!

Here are the players to stay focused on in free agency on the offensive side of the ball.

Former Georgia football RB Todd Gurley reacts to Jared Goff – Matt Stafford trade

Former Georgia football and Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley was not surprised by the Jared Goff trade that sent Matt Stafford to LA.

The NFL world was shocked to see the Los Angeles Rams deal Jared Goff and a few picks to the Detroit Lions for quarterback Matt Stafford.

However, given his departure from Los Angeles just one year ago, former Georgia running back Todd Gurley was not surprised to see such a trade be made.

“Well, another situation where I wasn’t surprised again,” Gurley said, per the NFL Network. “But you know, I like Goff, I like Goff, he’s a good guy. Don’t nobody care about who’s a good guy. I’m just happy he’ll be able to go somewhere and hopefully those guys welcome him with open arms and just not be judgmental and just let him play. He’s been a No. 1 pick for a reason, and he has a lot of ball left in him. I just want him to be happy, and I just want him to be able to go out there.

“It could be a good thing for him, you know? Just add an extra chip on your shoulder. A lot of players like to play with chips on their shoulder, but it’s a lot different when you’re a franchise quarterback and you take your team to the Super Bowl and two years later you’re on a whole other team. Like I told him, man, love him, just want him to be happy and keep doing what you’re doing.”

Gurley’s departure from the Rams wasn’t exactly on the best terms. After having somewhat of a falling out with the Rams’ front office and head coach Sean McVay, the team cut him and then took their time to pay him the money he was owed from a bonus. Gurley had no issues voicing his displeasure with the Rams organization.

Todd Gurley on Rams trading Jared Goff: ‘No one’s safe’

Last week, the Rams made another surprise move when they shipped former No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford.

The Los Angeles Rams shocked the league last season when they cut running back Todd Gurley just two years after giving him a monster extension. Gurley’s release was a prime example of the NFL’s ruthless nature. When a player is no longer viewed as an asset, a team will do whatever is necessary to move on from them, regardless of salary.

Last week, the Rams made another surprise move when they shipped former No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford. Goff was given a four-year, $134 million extension prior to the 2019 season and just like that, Los Angeles has moved on to someone else.

Gurley joined Solomon Wilcots on SiriusXM Radio to discuss the Rams’ decision to move on from Goff despite his big contract.

“A lot of teams would just keep a guy there just because they owe him so much money, but not with them, man,” said Gurley. “They want to win and they want to win now. So you’ve kind of got to look at it from both sides and kind of respect it, you know, respect the business aspect of it. But, you know, they want to win now and — no one’s safe.”

Todd Gurley: Rams trading Jared Goff ‘is another situation where I wasn’t surprised’

Todd Gurley was one of only a few people who wasn’t surprised by the Rams trading Jared Goff.

Apparently, Todd Gurley has seen enough shocking moves by the Los Angeles Rams in his time that he’s no longer surprised by what they’re doing over in Thousand Oaks. Gurley, who was cut by the Rams last offseason, shared his thoughts on the team’s decision to trade Jared Goff to the Lions for Matthew Stafford – a deal that will become official on March 17.

He told NFL Network that this move didn’t exactly surprise him the way it stunned everyone else.

“Well, another situation where I wasn’t surprised again,” Gurley said Wednesday. “But you know, I like Goff, I like Goff, he’s a good guy. Don’t nobody care about who’s a good guy, but I’m just happy he’ll be able to go somewhere and hopefully those guys welcome him with open arms and just not be judgmental and just let him play. He’s been a No. 1 pick for a reason, and he has a lot of ball left in him. I just want him to be happy, and I just want him to be able to go out there.”

Gurley clearly still holds Goff in high regard despite no longer being his teammate, and he wants nothing but the best for the soon-to-be-former Rams quarterback. Gurley did spin this trade into possibly a good thing for Goff, just as the quarterback himself did.

Goff said he’s excited to be with a team that wants him and for a fresh start with Dan Campbell, which is how Gurley sees it, too.

“It could be a good thing for him, you know?” Gurley continued. “Just add an extra chip on his shoulder. A lot of players like to play with chips on their shoulder, but it’s a lot different when you’re a franchise quarterback and you take your team to the Super Bowl and two years later, you’re on a whole other team. Like I told him, man, love him, just want him to be happy and just keep doing what you’re doing.”

Gurley’s split with the Rams wasn’t exactly an amicable one. The team cut him and then took a while to pay him the money he was owed from a bonus. He voiced his displeasure with the Rams multiple times on social media, demanding that he get his money.

That didn’t cloud his opinion of Goff, of course, as he still seems to have a good relationship with the 26-year-old quarterback.

Falcons RB Todd Gurley wants to stay in Atlanta

The Falcons brought in former Georgia running back Todd Gurley during the offseason in an attempt to improve the ground game.

The Falcons brought in former Georgia running back Todd Gurley during the offseason in an attempt to improve the team’s rushing attack. Gurley, a former All-Pro with the Rams, signed a one-year deal in Atlanta after being released in 2019.

On Wednesday afternoon, Gurley appeared on NFL Network and expressed excitement about the team’s new head coach, Arthur Smith, and general manager, Terry Fontenot. Gurley was asked by Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner if the Falcons’ recent hires make him want to stay in Atlanta for another season.

“I definitely have to reach out to him and the GM just to be able to talk to them to see what they’re thinking and just get a head start on the free agency thing,” said Gurley.

Given the leap in success Derrick Henry took once Smith was promoted to offensive coordinator in Tennessee, it’s easy to see the appeal of playing under Smith. This season with the Falcons, Gurley ran for less than 1,000 yards for the second season in a row, with a career-low 678 rushing yards. Since 2015, he leads the league with 67 touchdowns.

Whether or not Gurley returns is up to the Falcons’ new leadership, but he would probably have to take less money after an underwhelming 2020 campaign. If he does sign in Atlanta, the team could still add a running back in the draft but it wouldn’t be as big of a priority.

Three Falcons who fizzled out during Sunday’s season finale

The Atlanta Falcons put up a tough fight against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 17 but lost, 44-2, cementing their top-four draft selection.

The Atlanta Falcons put up a tough fight against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 17, but lost, 44-2, cementing their top-four draft selection. After looking at some Falcons who shined during Sunday’s game, here are three players who flamed out in the team’s season finale.

Todd Gurley

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

Naming Ito Smith as the starting running back seemed to only last a week. Todd Gurley was given the nod for the season finale and put on a very underwhelming performance, which could be the last of his Atlanta Falcons career.

For the day, Gurley totaled 18 yards on nine rushing attempts. Given the success of Brian Hill, you have to question the decision to start Gurley in place of Hill after his 62-yard run that nearly went the distance. Gurley’s time in Atlanta had some highs, like his nine touchdown runs, however, it’s seems unlikely that the team saw enough to re-sign to bring him back. That’s another Rams running back run aground in Atlanta.

Allen’s play in the defensive secondary was pretty underwhelming the entire game. Yes, Allen did manage to come up with an interception, but this was due to a deflected ball as the Bucs receiver fell to the ground.

Other than that, Allen allowed multiple big plays that helped add to Tampa Bay’s big day. His bad day was highlighted by two plays. One where he fell to the ground on Antonio Brown’s touchdown reception in the back of the end zone. The other came on Allen’s failed attempt to break up a deep pass hauled in by Chris Godwin.

This is likely the final time Allen suits up for the Falcons as he is rumored to be one of the several potential cap-causalities.

Atlanta’s Week 17 loss likely killed any chance Morris has to be retained as the Falcons head coach. Morris finished his time in the interim role with a record of 4-7, dropping five-straight games to end the year.

Morris did get off to a hot start and gained traction to be a legit contender to lead the Falcons beyond 2020, but the team let too many close games slip away. With “Black Monday” looming, there should be a decision on Morris before the evening ends and an announcement soon to follow.

Which pending Falcons free agents will return in 2021?

With the Atlanta Falcons already out of playoff contention, their Week 17 bout against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will finally end a tumultuous 2020 season.

With the Atlanta Falcons already out of playoff contention, their Week 17 bout against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will finally end a tumultuous 2020 season. Sunday’s game could also be the final time we see a number of players wearing a Falcons uniform.

Whether their contracts are coming to an end or they’re released as a way to clear cap space, Atlanta will have no choice but to make some tough decisions when it comes to signing players this offseason.

Notable players set to become free agents

• K Younghoe Koo
• C Alex Mack
• S Keanu Neal
• CB Darqueze Dennard
• RB Todd Gurley
• RB Brian Hill
• DE Steven Means
• DL Jacob Tuioti-Mariner
• TE Luke Stocker
• OL Matt Gono

Given the list of notable players whose contracts are set to expire, there aren’t many the Falcons can realistically bring back. Retaining kicker Younghoe Koo and safety Keanu Neal will likely be the team’s highest priorities.

However, given the lack of cap space, even after cuts, it may be unlikely to see both of them return. If the Falcons had to choose one, you would have to believe the team would side with Koo given his success in 2020.

Atlanta could still potentially bring back rotational pieces like DT Jacob Tuioti-Mariner and DE Steven Means to fill out the roster, which currently sits at 31 players for 2021.

[lawrence-related id=63143]

Notable players who may be cut to clear cap space

With the Falcons currently in the negative by $24 million, moves will have to be made to get them out of the red. Not only will Atlanta be forced to cut some players, the team will have to restructure certain contracts in order to put a complete roster together.

• S Ricardo Allen – frees $6.25 million
• OL James Carpenter – frees $4.04 million
• DL Allen Bailey – frees $4.5 million
• DL Tyeler Davison – frees $2.2 million

Ricardo Allen has missed four games in 2020 with different injuries, while James Carpenter has sat out of three. Both defensive linemen Allen Bailey and Tyeler Davison are rotational pieces for the Falcons. These four are the most likely to be cut and could save the team $16 million in cap space.

With Dante Fowler challenging Ray Edwards as the worst free-agent signing in franchise history, the Falcons may be inclined to eat his $15.3 million in dead money and hang on to his $3 million in savings. This would clear nearly $20 million in cap space, almost getting Atlanta out of trouble.

If the Falcons were to move on from Allen and Neal, the team would be extra thin at safety next season. Damontae Kazee and Sharrod Neasman will see their contracts end in the offseason as well. Atlanta will have second-year safety Jaylinn Hawkins returning, but the potential losses will make the position a key priority in the 2021 NFL draft.
