Malcolm Brown taking on leadership role with Todd Gurley gone

Malcolm Brown is using his experience in the Rams offense to his advantage this year.

Malcolm Brown is only 27 years old, but he’s viewed as the elder in the Rams’ running back room. That’s because the other backs on the roster are all 23 or younger and have no more than one year of NFL experience.

Brown is now viewed as the leader of the group with Todd Gurley gone, and it’s a role he’s embracing.

“Yeah, I mean it’s been easy to fall into that role. I knew right when left, I would probably play a bigger role. It’s easy in that running back room because we all want to learn and we all want to get better,” he said via conference call Monday. “So, there is nothing drastic that’s happened or anything like that. But, like I said, throughout training camp, we’ll see how we’ll fall into our roles and everything like that. But, everybody in that room wants to learn and wants to get better and we play off of each other. It makes it so much easier.”

Brown isn’t that much older than his fellow running backs on the team, but he does have at least three more years of experience on all of them. Apparently, Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson, John Kelly and Xavier Jones all let Brown know just how much older he is, frequently ribbing him about his age.

Brown couldn’t think of anything specific that represents the age gap, but he’s gotten an earful from his running mates.

“Man, I don’t know if I can think of any examples right off the bat. But, I definitely know what you’re talking about. Definitely,” he said. “They always make jokes that I’m the old head in the room and stuff like that. They remind me on the daily, for sure. I can’t sit here and think of an exact example. But, I definitely feel exactly what you’re talking about and they’re going to remind me all the time.”

Much of the talk surrounding the running back position has centered on Akers and Henderson. They’re the duo that has fans excited about the future, even though neither of them has been a key contributor like Brown has in the past.

He doesn’t yet know what his role is going to be on offense this season, but he’ll be in the mix for the starting job with Akers and Henderson. That battle will be settled in training camp and early in the season when things get back up to full speed.

“I believe we’ll really see once we strap the pads on and get training camp rolling and things like that we’ll kind of see how things play out,” he said. “I know myself and my mind, what I have for myself in that running back room being the oldest guy, is to do my best to bring these young guys along. I know I’ve been in this offense longer than anybody and then with the great addition that we have with Coach Thomas Brown, just to be an extra set of eyes, be an extra example for these young guys to play off of because, like I said, obviously I’ve been in it longer than anybody in the room.”

Listen: Matt Ryan gives expectations for Todd Gurley, Julio Jones

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan thinks things will be different in 2020 after the team signed free-agent RB Todd Gurley to bring some balance back to the offense.

In the three season since the Atlanta Falcons went to the Super Bowl, the offense just hasn’t been as potent as it was under former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

The team replaced him with Steve Sarkisian in 2017, then Dirk Koetter in 2019 with mostly mixed results. The Falcons’ problems offensively stem from more than just play-calling, though.

Running back Devonta Freeman was frequently injured over the past few seasons, while the offensive line tried to rebuild on the fly. These issues have led to predictable passing situations that took away from the productiveness of Julio Jones.

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan thinks things will be different in 2020 after the team signed free-agent RB Todd Gurley to bring some balance back to the offense. Training camp has just kicked off, and already Ryan is seeing improvements.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio, Ryan discussed his expectations for Gurley and Jones this season. Listen below, as shared by Mad Dog Sports’ Twitter account:

Matt Ryan says Gurley, Hurst ‘picking up the offense really quickly’

Atlanta made some big changes to its roster during the offseason, replacing both starting tight end Austin Hooper and running back Devonta Freeman.

Atlanta made some big changes to its roster during the offseason, replacing both starting tight end Austin Hooper and running back Devonta Freeman.

The Falcons signed Gurley to a team-friendly contract after his surprising release from the Rams. Meanwhile, Hurst was acquired from the Ravens via trade after Atlanta lost Hooper in free agency.

According to quarterback Matt Ryan, the team’s replacements are fitting in nicely. Ryan said that both players are picking up the offense quickly and look to be great schematic fits within the Falcons’ offense.

Gurley could potentially thrive in Atlanta’s zone rushing attack if he’s fully healthy this season. The team averaged just 85.1 yards per game on the ground in 2019.

For Hurst, the third-year TE has even more to prove. Drafted in the first round back 2018, his skill-set didn’t quite fit the Ravens’ run-first offense.

Hurst isn’t known for his blocking, but is set up for success in Atlanta where he won’t be asked to do much other than catch passes and take pressure off of wide receivers Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley.

We will see just how well these new Falcons fit in when the season begins. The team certainly has a leg up on the rest of the NFL, though, with zero players opting out before yesterday’s deadline.

Sleepers and Value Plays: Running Backs

2020 Fantasy Sleepers – Running Backs

A sleeper running back is a player taken as a backup who ends up worthy of being a starter or at least far outplays the draft slot where you selected him.  Average Draft Positions (ADP) are taken from MyFantasyLeague.com  using only recent drafts.

The Average Draft order shows a general picture of how your draft will unfold and where values/sleepers and bad values/busts likely exist. Any green highlight means the player is a good value that could be taken earlier. A red highlight signifies an overvalued player that is a bad value or just too high of a risk for that spot.

Average Draft order – Value plays

Sleepers and over-valued players

Best of the rest

Chris Thompson (JAC) – Worth noting that Jay Gruden is the offensive coordinator and he brought along Thompson with him from the Redskins Football Team where he had as many as 49 catches in a season.

Lynn Bowden Jr. (LV) – One of those “what to do with him” players that played as a quarterback, running back and wide receiver at Kentucky. Listed as a wideout in the NFL draft, the Raiders intend on using him as a running back. But also as a receiver. And maybe a bit of quarterback. All those fantasy points count. Great end-of-draft grab to see what happens.

Carlos Hyde (SEA) – Hyde finally lasted all 16 games in 2019 and turned in 1,070 rushing yards. This is his seventh year and fourth NFL team but Seattle loves to run the ball and Rashard Penny blew his knee last year and starts out on the PUP list. Hyde is a great handcuff pick for the Chris Carson owner and may end up with some stand-alone value.

Adrian Peterson (WAS) – Yes, he is 35 years old. And there are plenty of other backs on the Football Team like Derrius Guice, Antonio Gibson, Peyton Barber, and J.D. McKissic. But two years in Washington and he’s offered over 1,000 total yards both times despite being the guy I always pick up at the end of drafts.

Twitter can’t believe ex-Rams RB Todd Gurley is 51st on Top 100 Players of 2020

Twitter erupted after Todd Gurley was revealed as the 51st-best player.

NFL Network is revealing its annual list of the top 100 players in the NFL this week and as always, it’s a highly criticized ranking – oftentimes for good reason. Sure, there are fanbases that overreact to one of their favorite players being snubbed, but there are also players who are universally questioned for being ranked so high.

Relating to the Rams, a large contingent of fans can’t believe Todd Gurley was ranked 51st on this year’s list after a terrible season in 2019. That’s ahead of Chris Jones, Zack Martin, Davante Adams, Josh Jacobs and Myles Garrett.

The reactions on Twitter were about what you’d expect, eliciting 208 replies as of this writing – one of the highest totals of any player revealed thus far. For comparison, Cooper Kupp’s reveal as the 89th-best player received only 20 replies.

Here are some of the responses.

On last year’s list, Gurley was ranked fifth heading into the 2019 season. That was after he was named a first-team All-Pro once again in 2018 and put together a strong campaign outside of missing the end of the season.

His production fell off a cliff last season as his touches were limited and his yards per carry dropped from 4.9 to 3.8. He finished 20th in rushing yards with 857, while his 3.8 yards per carry ranked 11th-worst among qualified players. It didn’t help that he fumbled it three times and dropped seven of the 49 passes that came his way, either.

This isn’t to pile on Gurley for one bad year, but calling him the 51st-best player in the NFL right now seems misguided. But as so many other fans point out, the list is voted on by players, and sometimes that can skew the actual value of it.

NFL top 100 players list: Falcons RB Todd Gurley ranked No. 51

The Atlanta Falcons now have two players on the NFL Network’s top 100 players list as running back Todd Gurley made the cut on Monday night, joining defensive tackle Grady Jarrett,

Gurley came in at No. 51 on part two of the countdown after finishing with 1,064 all-purpose yards and 14 total touchdowns in 2019. Check out the full segment below, as shared by the team’s Twitter account:
