49ers were ahead of curve on NFL uniform changes

NFL teams are learning a lesson the 49ers learned almost 20 years ago.

The 49ers aren’t likely to undergo a major uniform rebrand any time soon because they did what had to happen a long time ago.

As some NFL teams wade through the muck of altered uniforms that feature different color shades, weird fonts, strange gradients, unnecessary piping and other bells and whistles, they’re finding a reversion back to a more classic look will almost always win over fansmore than something ‘new and improved.’

The Jets and Lions most recently announced new uniforms that resemble the more classic looks of the teams’ pasts.

The Jaguars have not only simplified their uniforms recently, but they also teased some kind of reversion to their original uniforms with an alternate jersey for this season. The Cardinals did something similar last season. The Vikings did the same in 2013.

The 49ers in 1998 strayed from their classic red home jerseys and white road jerseys with gold pants, and opted instead for a deeper red jersey with a slew of different accoutrements including a black shadowing on the numbers with some gold trim, different color helmet and face mask, and a logo on the pants. It was a perfectly late-90s style, but it diverted from a classic look and aged poorly.

San Francisco from time to time for the next 10 years would rock a throwback alternate that was ostensibly the uniforms they wear now. In 2009 they finally went back to the classic look permanently, learning a lesson a slew of teams are only now learning – nostalgia plays and simpler is better.

That’s a key reason their red and white alternates that are a reproduction of the throwbacks they wore in 1994 when they rocked a version of their 1955 uniforms. First, they look incredible. But there’s also a ton of nostalgia for the mid-90s and there’s a simplicity that makes them timeless.

The 49ers organization saved itself a lot of angst by avoiding the pitfalls of trying to innovate after their shift in the late-90s. They went right back to what works after a decade. Now other teams are following suit and the NFL will be better (at least aesthetically) for it.

Eagles can wear all-black uniforms in 2025 after NFL approves a third helmet design

The NFL informed teams today it has revised the uniform policy to allow clubs a third helmet design for alternate uniforms in 2025

The Eagles brought back the alternate Kelly green home uniforms in 2023 to great fanfare, but because of NFL rules, teams were allowed only two helmet colorways.

The Kelly green return meant the loss of the all-black alternates for one season, but that’ll change in 2025 after the NFL announced a new ruling that approves a third helmet for all 32 teams.

Prior to the start of the 2022 season, star wide receiver DeVonta Smith stated that the team had wanted to switch to a new helmet for some time now.

“It’s something the majority of us as players always wanted – just a little change in uniform.”

Philadelphia went 2-0 last season wearing their Kelly green uniforms, beating the Bills and Dolphins.

NFL numbers game adds No. 0 uniform option for certain players

Many NFL players will have the option of wearing No. 0 starting in 2023

NFL players will have the chance to wear the number zero after a proposal was approved on Tuesday.

The only players who can’t wear No. 0 are offensive and defensive linemen.

Remembering when the legendary 00 was Jim Otto of the Oakland Raiders.

Since he was a lineman, that wouldn’t fly.

Calvin Ridley of the Jaguars already is on the bandwagon.

Falcons to wear throwback back red helmets in Week 6 matchup

The Atlanta Falcons will officially bring back their red helmets for their Week 6 matchup against the 49ers.

In our recent poll, Falcons fans overwhelmingly voted in favor of the team  returning to its classic red helmets, something many have long been calling for in Atlanta.

Well, it appears Arthur Blank has heard your call and one of the most memorable looks in team history is coming back. The team announced over Twitter that the red helmet would make its return in Atlanta’s Week 6 matchup against the 49ers.

Tom Brady rails over new NFL jersey number rules

Call Tom Brady old school when it comes to numbers he thinks players should wear

The G.O.A.T. went old school when it came to the NFL’s new rule regarding numbers players can wear in the 2021 season.

Skill position players are able to wear single-digit numbers after a rule passed this week and Tom Brady believes it is going to create chaos.

“Good luck trying to block the right people now!” the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ QB posted on his Instagram story, with an image of the new numbers permitted. “Going to make for a lot of bad football!”

The rule permits quarterbacks, punters and place-kickers to wear numbers 1-19, defensive backs 1-49, linebackers 1-59, and running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers 1-49 and 80-89.

Johnny Hekker responds to Rams fan’s idea about yellow alternate jersey on Reddit

The Rams will unveil a new alternate uniform this year but Johnny Hekker doubts it’ll be a yellow jersey.

When the Los Angeles Rams released their new redesigned uniforms last offseason, two sets of jerseys were unveiled: Royal and Bone. But the team also shared that alternate jerseys would be coming in 2021 and 2022.

While it’s only March, the Rams still haven’t said anything about the new uniform combination that will be revealed this year. Fans have been speculating about what the third jersey could look like, throwing out ideas ranging from an all-black uniform to a new yellow jersey – similar to the old Color Rush set.

One fan on Reddit is hoping that the third jersey will be “Sol,” and that it’ll be unique with different sleeves and numbers. Johnny Hekker is surprisingly active on Reddit, often interacting with fans under the username “Whatthehekk,” and he replied to this idea with one word: “Doubtful.”

Being a member of the team, Hekker would seem to know what the Rams might be planning with their first of two alternate uniforms. It would make sense for them to come out with a yellow jersey to go with the blue and bone tops, but Hekker doesn’t seem to think that’s going to happen.

It would be cool to see the Rams reveal a white and blue throwback to the ‘70s, paying homage to the Fearsome Foursome. That would make a lot of sense as an alternate uniform and would be different enough from the current blue and bone combinations.

While there is no timeline for the Rams to release their third uniform combination, they unveiled the redesign in May last year. Perhaps they could use a similar timeline this year when they reveal their first alternate combination.

Or, if they want to have fans involved at SoFi Stadium, which was the plan last year, they could wait until later this summer if COVID-19 restrictions ease up.

Falcons listed at No. 24 in USA TODAY’s uniform power rankings

Twitter isn’t an overwhelmingly positive place as it is, but the Atlanta Falcons got to see first-hand how brutal it can be when they dropped their new uniforms in April.

In the world of social media, you don’t have to wait long to get an idea of what the fans or basically anyone that has internet access thinks about something.

Twitter isn’t an overwhelmingly positive place as it is, but the Atlanta Falcons got to see first-hand how brutal it can be when they dropped their new uniforms in April.

The franchise had hyped up its jersey release, claiming the new uniforms embodied the unique culture of Atlanta. However, after they were leaked on social media, the Falcons decided to move up the release. The designs got mixed reviews, with some fans loving them and others finding them comically bad.

In USA TODAY’s 2020 NFL uniform power rankings, the Falcons were all the way down the list at No. 24:

24. Atlanta Falcons (25): Thumbs up – matte black helmet and embrace of “ATL” on the new, largely toned-down uniforms. Thumbs down – silver facemasks, black/red gradient alternate jersey and failure to bring back the old falcon logo. C’mon, let’s go all the way and totally phase out all memories of Super Bowl LI, boys.

Whatever your thoughts are on Atlanta’s new jerseys, we still have to see them under the stadium lights before we can make a complete judgement.

Twitter reacts to Rams’ new uniforms

The majority of Twitter does not care for the Rams’ new uniforms.

The Los Angeles Rams shocked everyone on Wednesday with a surprise release of their new uniforms. There was no build-up or teaser shared ahead of time, but instead, just a tweet shared by the team.

They do resemble the team’s throwbacks somewhat, particularly the royal and yellow set, but the “bone” gray away uniform is definitely different and out of the ordinary.

NFL fans and media members on Twitter shared their immediate reactions, the majority of whom did not care for the Rams’ new look. Here’s how Twitter reacted to the unveiling.

Why are the Rams waiting so long to unveil their new uniforms?

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the Rams’ plans, and there’s still no release date on the horizon.

This has been a big year for new uniforms in the NFL. Six teams have already unveiled their redesigned looks, some more drastic than others. The Colts, for instance, only tweaked their branding with new typefaces, numbers and a secondary logo. The Falcons scrapped their past uniforms for a complete redesign, while the Patriots essentially made their Color Rush uniforms their primary ones.

The Browns, Buccaneers and Chargers also redesigned their uniforms, drawing off past looks throughout each franchise’s history.

And then there are the Los Angeles Rams, whose brand refresh was probably the most anticipated of any team’s coming into 2020. They already pulled back the curtain on their new logos, which the majority of fans hate, as well as their updated colors – which are essentially just brighter, more vibrant versions of the throwback blue and yellow scheme.

Yet, it’s now mid-May and the Rams still haven’t revealed their new uniforms. Back in March, just before the logo reveal, COO Kevin Demoff said in a letter to fans that the team would roll them out “later this spring.” Reports have also indicated that the uniforms would be released after the draft, which is now almost three weeks in the rearview.

And still, no new uniforms.

Fans on Twitter are growing impatient, anxiously awaiting the big reveal. Some have speculated that the Rams are making last-minute changes to the uniforms after all the outrage over the logos. There have been no leaks yet, and the Rams haven’t released so much as a teaser for the new jerseys.

So what’s the reasoning for the Rams waiting this long to reveal their uniforms? The other six teams all revealed theirs between April 7 and April 21, with the Chargers being the last team to show off theirs about three weeks ago.

It’s likely that the coronavirus has had an impact on the Rams’ original plans. It was always going to be a two-part reveal with the logos and colors coming before the draft and the uniforms afterwards, but it’s possible the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the uniform reveal.

According to NFL Network’s Andrew Siciliano, who also calls Rams preseason games on TV, the team originally planned to release the new uniforms at SoFi Stadium with fans being able to attend the event – likely similar to the way the Titans unveiled theirs on Broadway in Downtown Nashville two years ago.

“That uniform reveal was going to be – one of the ideas, at least – at the stadium, kind of like a soft opening,” Siciliano said on Instagram Live. “Bring people to the stadium, you do the jerseys, they’re kind of cool. Well now obviously you can’t do that, so the Rams are trying to think of a good way to do it. They’ll do it, there might be a charitable element, I’m just assuming. I don’t know. But don’t a date yet on that. I think you’re going to like them, though. I think you’re going to like ‘em.”

That video was from April 30, and yet there still hasn’t been an update on when the uniforms will be revealed. Siciliano has clearly seen the uniforms, as have other reporters, but no one knows when they’ll be released to the public.

At this point, there’s really no rush for the Rams. There are no practices, no OTAs, no minicamp and it’s unclear if training camp will take place in July as it’s scheduled to. Therefore, players won’t be putting on practice uniforms or the new helmets anytime soon.

The Rams could conceivably wait until this summer to release the new uniforms because of the lack of football currently being played. That’s not to say they should do that, but waiting until July when SoFi Stadium is closer to being finished is a possibility – even if fans wouldn’t be able to attend the event.

No matter when the Rams release them, all eyes will be on the new uniforms. When it comes to sports, there are no other major events happening. There are no NBA playoffs to compete with, no MLB season to draw attention from. Whenever the Rams do pull back the curtain, the sports world will be paying attention.

Hopefully they release the uniforms sooner rather than later, not only because fans are growing tired of waiting, but because it could help change the public perception of the rebrand after the logo debacle. Or, there’s always a chance the uniforms will flop like the logo did, and fans will be even more upset with the team.
