2020 NFL Draft: Tight End rankings from Draft Wire

Taking a look at the tight end position in the draft.

The Indianapolis Colts have plenty of areas to address this offseason through free agency and the upcoming 2020 NFL draft. One of their most underrated needs comes at the tight end position.

While it isn’t a need in the sense like the quarterback or wide receiver positions are, the Colts are likely looking to add another piece to the tight end room, especially with Eric Ebron on the way out.

There aren’t a whole lot of options for the Colts in free agency, unless they want to splurge on Hunter Henry if he hits the market. That means the Colts are likely looking to the draft to add to the room.

Our friends over at Draft Wire published their tight end rankings for the upcoming draft. Here’s a look at the top 10:

  1. Cole Kmet, Notre Dame
  2. Hunter Bryant, Washington
  3. Brycen Hopkins, Purdue
  4. Taddeus Moss, LSU
  5. Harrison Bryant, FAU
  6. Adam Trautman, Dayton
  7. Albert Okwuegbunam, Missouri
  8. Colby Parkinson, Stanford
  9. Stephen Sullivan, LSU
  10. Jacob Breeland, Oregon

The Colts have a solid tight end room but one that still needs some work. Veteran leader Jack Doyle signed a three-year extension this offseason while Mo Alie-Cox is currently the No. 2 behind him. He’s promising but still a work in progress and has only truly been used as a blocker.

There are few options for the Colts. Hopkins is an intriguing talent for Indy and one that they could target in the second round, perhaps with the No. 44 overall pick.

If they wanted more of a dynamic threat, the Colts could look at a player like Bryant or Parkinson.

The room has a lot of promising talent but there will need to be some additions during the draft. It is unlikely they do so early in the draft, which means they could be looking to add one in the mid-rounds.

Russell Wilson appears to be recruiting TE Greg Olsen to Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson appears to be recruiting tight end Greg Olsen to the team after his release from Carolina.

The Seattle Seahawks are a potential landing spot for tight end Greg Olsen after his release from the Carolina Panthers, and quarterback Russell Wilson is apparently on board about bringing the 13-year veteran to the Emerald City.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton whispered something in Wilson’s ear at the 2020 NFL Honors. As expected, speculation arose on Twitter about what Newton could possibly be saying to Wilson. Olsen took the time to give an extremely interesting response via his own Twitter account.

Wilson then responded to Olsen’s tweet with a comment and an image of the two together.

The Seahawks could certainly use more assistance at the tight end position with Will Dissly’s durability issues and the uncertainty regarding the rest of the unit. Olsen has suffered brutal foot injuries over the years and is approaching 35 years of age, but may still be capable of contributing for a team with Super Bowl ambitions such as the Seahawks.

It is not a given that Olsen will be on his way to Seattle, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that he will visit the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins first.

However, this is a compelling situation for 12s to keep an eye on as free agency rolls around.

Seahawks interested in veteran tight end Greg Olsen

Former Carolina Panthers star tight end Greg Olsen is slated to head to the Great Northwest and the Seattle Seahawks on a free-agent visit.

The Seattle Seahawks are in the full swing of the offseason and they certainly are not wasting any time moving forward in 2020. As the team plans ahead to the new season, there is an open desire from quarterback Russell Wilson to add more superstar talent to the roster.

Perhaps this could come in the form of an old rival of the Seahawks.

On Tuesday morning, ESPN’s NFL insider, Adam Schefter, reported former Panthers tight end Greg Olsen has scheduled a visit with the Seahawks.

In one of the more shocking developments this early in the offseason, the Panthers announced there was to be a mutual parting of ways between their organization and the longtime star tight end.

Olsen may not be a Panther anymore, but don’t expect him to sit idle. On Saturday before the Super Bowl during the NFL Honors, Olsen had a tweet which certainly piqued the interest of Seahawk fans everywhere.

After battling injuries in 2017 and 2018, Olsen returned to play in 14 games. His raw numbers didn’t leap off the page, but he was playing with a backup quarterback the majority of the season and watching the games showed he is still more than capable.

Seattle’s interest in Olsen is certainly understandable. Due to more season-ending injuries to Will Dissly, and nagging health concerns with Luke Willson, the Seahawks became rather thin at the position towards the end of the year. Not to mention all the years Olsen has played against the team, which has provided the Seahawks with plenty of first-hand experience as to what he can bring to the field.

The Seahawks could use a solid veteran presence at tight end, especially with Dissly coming back off yet another arduous rehab. At 34 years old, Olsen is no spring chicken. But he does seem to have some gas left in the tank, and Wilson seems to agree.

WATCH: Chiefs TE Travis Kelce says ‘dynasty is just starting’

Travis Kelce, the team’s star tight end, says they won’t have to wait nearly as long for another Lombardi Trophy.

The Kansas City Chiefs had to wait 50 years to get back to the NFL’s biggest stage after winning Super Bowl IV in 1970.

But Travis Kelce, the team’s star tight end, says they won’t have to wait nearly as long for another Lombardi Trophy.

“The dynasty is just starting, baby,’’ he told reporters after the Chiefs’ 31-20 win over the 49ers in Miami. “It’s just starting. Motivated to do it again, for sure.’’

That may feel like a bold promise to make after just one Super Bowl title in recent history, but several of Kelce’s teammates spoke of a budding dynasty after the win, including defensive tackle Chris Jones and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Patrick Mahomes tried to slow down the dynasty talk in his post-game press conference:

“For me, it’s about taking it one year at a time. We came up short last year. We understood how hard of a challenge it was to get in this position again, and we found a way to do it. … We have to take it one year at a time, one day at a time, and try to put together great years. And then, at the end of it all, we’ll have no regrets of where we’re at.”

Texas Longhorns Having Busy Day Of Offers To Recruits

The Texas Longhorns and head coach Tom Herman were busy on Saturday as the Longhorns offered scholarships to five potential signees.

The Texas Longhorns staff had quite the day with recruiting. On top of their offer to 2022 cornerback Jay Guilbeau of Port Arthur, Texas the Longhorns handed out a few more offers to potential signees for future classes.

Coach Tom Herman and the staff handed out offers to the following players who made their announcements on Twitter.

  • Destyn Pazon, 2021 four-star wide receiver from Edna Karr in New Orleans, LA
  • Morice Blackwell, 2021 unrated linebacker from Martin in Arlington, TX
  • Elijah Arroyo, 2021 unrated tight end from Independence in Frisco, TX
  • Landen King, 2021 three-star tight end from Atascocita in Humble, TX
  • Martrell Harris Jr, 2020 unrated linebacker from The Woodlands, TX

The recruiting event on the Forty Acres seemed to be a hit among the prospective Longhorns who were able to attend. Texas is looking to build momentum towards another top 10 recruiting class and with a big day on Wednesday their 2020 class could also be in the top 10 for every year under Tom Herman.

Seahawks thin at tight end and could look for reinforcement in 2020

The Seattle Seahawks are relatively thin at the tight end position and could look to reinforce the unit through free agency and the draft.

The tight end position may be a crucial need for the Seattle Seahawks this offseason with concerns about Will Dissly’s durability and the depth of the roster.

Dissly has been productive when he has been healthy and could still serve as a key target for Russell Wilson in the future, but he has suffered two season-ending injuries in as many years in the NFL. Seattle has few viable options outside of him.

Jacob Hollister became a key contributor on offense after the Seahawks acquired him in a trade with the Patriots, but has also had his share of rough moments and is a restricted free agent as well. Ed Dickson has spent most of his time in the Emerald City on injured reserve. This looks like a tight end unit in need of reinforcement.

There will likely be players available in free agency – such as Austin Hooper and Eric Ebron – for the team to consider as well as this year’s draft prospects. The Seahawks should be looking into all possible options moving forward.

The Seahawks’ most glaring positional needs may be along both the offensive and defensive lines, but tight end is a position of need that should not be overlooked in free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft.
