Patriots cut two players to make room for latest roster signings

Two releases have been announced by the Patriots, following their recent signings.

With the recent signings of running back C.J. Marable and offensive tackle Micah Vanterpool, the New England Patriots had to make corresponding moves to free up space on their 90-man roster.

On Saturday, the team announced they have released linebacker Olakunle Fatukasi and safety Jourdan Heilig.

Running back and offensive tackle are both serious positions of need for the Patriots right now. Veteran running back Ty Montgomery is still working his way back from an injury, and the Patriots are limiting Rhamondre Stevenson’s workload in anticipation of the regular season.

So the heavy lifting has been left to second-year running backs Pierre Strong Jr. and Kevin Harris.

Meanwhile, the offensive tackle position has been shaky with a 34-year-old Riley Reiff likely starting on the right side and the oft-injured Trent Brown serving as the blindside protector on the left.

Heilig had some legitimately good moments on special teams throughout the spring and summer work. For now, however, it would seem as if the Patriots are prioritizing a clear need over his roster spot.

Patriots announce 2023 rookie jersey numbers ahead of preseason opener

The jersey numbers for the Patriots’ 2023 rookies have been revealed.

The New England Patriots’ 2023 NFL draft class and undrafted free agents are ditching their temporarily assigned numbers for their actual game numbers.

On Thursday, the Patriots announced all of the new numbers ahead of their preseason opener against the Houston Texans.

With rosters being at 90 players at this stage, a lot of these numbers could change as rosters are finalized and numbers shift. It is also important to note that there are some players currently wearing the same number as another player on the roster. That is permitted in training camp, as long as the players aren’t not on the same side of the ball.

Let’s take a look at what numbers the rookies have decided to go with for the next few weeks of training camp.

Report: Patriots signing Appalachian State LB/S Jourdan Heilig to deal

The Patriots are reportedly signing UDFA Jourdan Heilig.

After watching 259 other names go off the 2023 NFL draft board, former Appalachian State linebacker/safety Jourdan Heilig is getting his NFL shot with the New England Patriots.

AtoZ Sports’ Doug Kyed reported the news on Sunday.

Like every other team around the league, the Patriots are in the process of sifting through the remaining undrafted free agents to see which players fit their team the best. Heilig could be a clear fit as predominantly a special teams player.

The Patriots struggled on special teams in the 2022 season. Things even devolved to the point of the unit giving up two touchdowns in the season finale against the Buffalo Bills.

The Patriots found a special teams diamond in the rough last year when signing Brenden Schooler to a deal.

We’ll see if they can find similar success with Heilig.
