Carmen’s Crew blows big lead, knocked out of TBT

Better luck next year! Do you get into this tournament at all?

The journey that looked so promising for the Ohio State alumni team known as Carmen’s Crew has come to an end.

The mostly Thad Matta era players had looked like a hard team to beat thus far in The Basketball Tournament but went dry from the offensive end at the wrong time against The Money Team. Carmen’s Crew blew an 18-point lead and eventually fell 91-89 in a third-round game at the Covelli Center on the campus of The Ohio State University.

It started off well enough. William Buford had a big first quarter, and Carmen’s Crew went into the half up 50-38 on a hot-shooting first half of play. The team would remain at the same margin after an evenly played third quarter, but then the comeback began with a 14-7 run for The Money Team to start the fourth quarter.

Despite the furious rally, Carmen’s Crew still led by five points as the Elam Ending began with the score at 83-78. However, The Money Team continued its run and tied the score up at 83-83, then with both teams tied at 89 with a target score of 91, Xavier Munford of The Money Team hit the game-winner to send the Buckeye loving crowd home disappointed. He led all scorers with 22 total points for the contest.

Despite the loss, Carmen’s Crew had three scorers in double figures. Kosta Koufos led the squad with 18 points, while William Buford tallied 15 and David Lighty pitched in 14.

Now, we’ll have to wait until next year to see what the next chapter for Carmen’s Crew is.
