Carmen’s Crew falls in regional finals of TBT

It was fun again while it lasted. #GoBucks

It was at least a run, but one that ended too soon for the Ohio State alumni team known as Carmen’s Crew.

The retooled and reconfigured team that had a lot of Scarlet and Gray in its DNA made it through the first two rounds of The Basketball Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the Dayton region, but fell to No. 2 seed Friday Beers on Saturday night, 72-63.

Carmen’s Crew started the contest by racing out to a lead and finished the first quarter with a 22-15 lead. Friday Beers didn’t shoot particularly well in the first quarter but started to find the mark from beyond the arc in the second quarter and closed the gap to 39-34 at the half.

The second half was unfortunately a different story. Friday Beers shook off a shooting hangover on Saturday and went on a run to start the third period and rode it all the way to a 55-51 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

Carmens’ Crew hung close and pulled to within just three points (66-63) within the Elam Ending, but Friday Beers connected from deep in two-straight positions to more or less wrap things up including a circus shot from Dee Bost to end things.

Now, we’ll have to wait another year to see if Carmen’s Crew returns to play in the TBT (they said they will) and what the roster might look like.

Carmen’s Crew continues run at The Basketball Tournament, advances to third round

Moving on … #GoBucks

It may not be the same nucleus of Ohio State basketball players we’ve seen in years past with Carmen’s Crew, but the team is looking just as talented through the first two games of The Basketball Tournament.

And on Friday, Carmen’s Crew easily disposed of India Rising in Dayton, 82-56, to advance to the third round of the tournament.

It was a balanced attack for No. 4 seed Carmen’s Crew. Scott Thomas, Javon Bess, and Malik Dime led the team with eleven points each, with Kyle Young, Keyshawn Woods, and Kaleb Wesson each adding ten points toward the victory.

The game was tight and competitive early with the teams ending the first quarter tied at 23 points each. The second period would belong to Carmen’s Crew, however, with the defense clamping down on India Rising, all while pushing the lead out on a 15-2 run and a commanding two-digit lead at halftime.

India Rising tried to claw back into it in the third quarter, getting to within six points before the Buckeyes again went on a run to take control of the game and push the lead to 19 points.

Carmen’s Crew would own the game from there and went into the Elam Ending up by a score of 74-49. Jalen Tate, brother of former Ohio State player Jae’Sean Tate, would score the winning basket for an easy win.

Next up for Carmen’s Crew is a date with No. 2 seed Friday Beers at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday. The winner moves on to the quarterfinals.

Team War Ready unable to hang close with The Ville in TBT opening round

Team War Ready looks to stay alive in the TBT tournament after dropping their first game.

In the opening round of TBT, [autotag]Team War Ready[/autotag] fell 91-67 at the hands of The Ville.

The game was even in the beginning but The Ville pulled away towards the end of the first period and Team War Ready was never able to catch up.

Team War Ready shot 26-56 (46%) from the field, 11-12 (91%) from the free-throw line, and 4-21 (19%) from beyond the arch.

[autotag]Shaun Willett[/autotag] led the team in scoring with 17 points and in assists with three. [autotag]Horace Spencer[/autotag] led the team in rebounds with 10.

The Ville shot 32-65 (49%) from the field, 18-28 (64%) from the free-throw line, and 9-34 (26%) from three-point range.

Russ Smith led the team in scoring with 21 points. Chinanu Onuaku led the team in rebounds with eight. Peyton Siva led the team in assists with seven.

Other than free throws, the only statistical category Team War Ready led in was blocks. The Tigers alumni team produced one block to the Cardinals’ zero.

The TBT is a single-elimination tournament so Team War Ready’s run has come to an end. The Ville will take on the Jackson TN Underdogs in the second round. The game is scheduled for Thursday at 7:00 p.m. CT.

Team Arkansas loses in quarterfinals of The Tournament in Wichita

Team Arkansas put up a valiant effort, but fell just short against the Aftershocks in Wichita in the quarterfinals of ‘The Tournament’ on ESPNU on Sunday evening.

A number of former Arkansas Razorback basketball players were on ‘Team Arkansas’ and had made it to the regional final on Sunday.

An ESPNU television audience saw them lose 63-59 to the AfterShocks when they hit a 3-pointer to end the game via the Elam Ending.

Hunter Mickelson, who played at Arkansas for two seasons under Mike Anderson, had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The team had been playing without the services of Sonny Weems, the former all-SEC swingman from 2008, for the majority of the tournament.

Weems showed up Sunday and had 12 points. The Aftershocks employed Trey Wade, who played on the 2021-22 Razorbacks.

Former Michigan State basketball forward Ben Carter will be competing in this year’s TBT event that begins this week

Former Michigan State basketball forward Ben Carter will be competing in this year’s TBT event that begins this week.

TBT has become an annual summer event that generally includes former college basketball stars who didn’t make it big at the professional level. Carter will be playing on the former UNLV players team — the Vegas Rebellion.

PJ Hairston signs with Virginia Dream of TBT

Former North Carolina Tar Heel P.J. Hairston signs with Virginia Dream of TBT.

Former North Carolina Tar Heel [autotag]PJ Hairston[/autotag] will be back on the court; he is joining the Virginia Dream for the The Basketball Tournament this summer.

Hairston was one of the six players announced as participants in the high-stakes summer tournament as event organizers kicked off what they call commitment week. The tournament’s winning team splits a grand prize of $1 million.

This is not Hairston’s first rodeo with event. In 2019, he hit a game-winner for Team CP3 over Tampa that sent social media into a frenzy.

Hairston is best known for his days playing for Roy Williams at UNC. Hairston came to the Tar Heels as a five-star recruit in the 2011 class.

After a slow freshman season, Hairston emerged during his second year, averaging 14.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals. His talents led him to be the 26th pick in the 2014 NBA draft.

War Ready defeats Woco Showtime for first win in TBT

Danjel Purifoy hits the final shot to push War Ready to their first-ever TBT win.

Last summer, Team War Ready took the first step in joining The Basketball Tournament by fielding a team. This summer, War Ready reached another milestone by grabbing its’ first win.

War Ready, behind a late three-pointer by [autotag]Danjel Purifoy[/autotag], earned their first win of the 2022 TBT by defeating Woco Showtime, a team composed of former Wofford Basketball players, 70-67.

Purifoy’s game-winning bucket came during a portion of the game called “the Elam Ending”. The rule states that once the game reaches the four-minute mark in the final period, the clock will be turned off, and the teams will play until a certain score is reached.

In today’s game, the magic number was 70.

The score had reached 67-67, that is when Purifoy took the final shot and lifted War Ready to the squad’s first-ever win:

Purifoy ended the game with 11 points, one point behind scoring leader [autotag]TJ Dunans[/autotag]. Isaiah Williams led the team in assists with three, while [autotag]Mustapha Heron[/autotag] pulled down six rebounds.

War Ready’s next game will be against East Tennessee State’s alumni team, Bucketneers, in the round of 32 in the West Virginia bracket. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CDT and can be seen on ESPN3.

Jaylen Barford scores 24, Team Arkansas falls in TBT

Team Arkansas is out of the The Basketball Tournament, going 2-1 with a bunch of former Hogs.

Team Arkansas’ run at the TBT is over.

A team comprised largely of former Razorbacks basketball players took part in The Basketball Tournament this past week in hopes of playing for a $1,000,000 prize. But after winning their first two games in the Omaha Regional, Team Arkansas was beaten in the finale by Gutter Cats on Tuesday, 62-52.

Former Hogs guard Jaylen Barford led all scorers with 24 points while Dusty Hannahs joined in him double figures with 13. Team Arkansas was within three points in the fourth quarter before a Gutter Cats run at the end allowed them to reach the target score.

The Gutter Cats were led by Tyrese Rice, a former guard at Boston College, with 22 points. They advance to the final eight-team tournament in Dayton from July 28 – August 1.

Other former Razorbacks on Team Arkansas included Courtney Fortson, Trey Wade, Sonny Weems, Hunter Mickelson and Jimmy Whitt.

Always Us eliminated in the second round of The Basketball Tournament

The hopes of Always Us winning $1 million went down the drain as the Oregon alumni squad was eliminated in the second round of TBT.

It was deja vu all over again.

For the second straight year, the Oregon alumni team of Always Us has been eliminated from The Basketball Tournament after a second-round defeat. This time it was at the hands, or paws, of the Gutter Cats by a score of 72-62 in Omaha, Neb.

Shukur Juiston led the way for the former Ducks with 16 points. Jacob Young added 11 and Michael Finke poured in 10.

But it wasn’t nearly enough as the Gutter Cats hit 15-of-32 from three-point range and erased a 37-31 halftime deficit. They came out of the halftime break and proceeded to outscore Always Us 22-9 in the third quarter to take complete control of the game.

As with the NCAA tourney, TBT is a one-and-done tournament, so Always Us will need to put their dreams of winning $1 million on hold for another summer.

Jacob Young leads Team Always Us over Jackson Underdogs in first round of TBT

Always Us, made of former Oregon basketball players, advanced to the second round of TBT with a 79-78 win behind 27 points from Jacob Young.

It’s not the NBA. It’s not Division I basketball. But it’s exciting nonetheless.

Oregon’s alumni team Always Us managed to defeat the Jackson Underdogs 79-78 in the first round of The Basketball Tournament with the eventual champion taking home $1 million.

Always Us, the 4-seed in their region, will now take on the 1-seed Gutter Cat Gang on Sunday at 3 p.m. PST.

Newcomer to the team Jacob Young led the way with 27 points, including 15 points in the third quarter to help the former Ducks erase a nine-point halftime deficit.

The game went back and forth for the entire fourth quarter until the game went into the Elam Ending, a very different way to finish out a basketball game. The goal is to have the game end on a made basket and have a set score total a team has to reach and in this case, it was 79.

Always Us was down 78-77 and had to get a defensive stand, which they got. Garrett Sim eventually found himself open for three, but he was fouled. The Portland native drained the first two free throws to send the Underdogs packing.

Every game of TBT can be seen on ESPN3.
