The winner of the Rory McIlroy-Scottie Scheffler vs. Bryson DeChambeau-Brooks Koepka Showdown will get crypto, not cash

According to a report, the event will be called the Crypto.com Showdown.

The Match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson featured a large pile of cash for the winner.

The latest rendition will have crypto being doled out to the champ.

This is all because the PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf showdown featuring Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka has a title sponsor and according to a report, it’s Crypto.com.

The name of the upcoming event is the Crypto.com Showdown and it’ll be in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The winners will receive a multimillion-dollar prize in CRO Cronos, which is the native token of Crypto.com. This marks the first instance of a major sports competition offering a prize purse entirely in cryptocurrency.

“This tournament demonstrates the potential of cryptocurrency to reshape the sports and entertainment industries,” Marzalek said in the story.

The event is organized by BZ Entertainment and EverWonder Studio.

Crypto.com currently partnerships with Formula 1, UFC and the World Cup.

In September, Golfweek reported on a Match featuring Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. That PGA Tour vs. LIV event is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 17 in Las Vegas.

Here are some photos from The Match Superstars.

Exclusive: Venue, date settled for Las Vegas match featuring McIlroy and Scheffler versus DeChambeau and Koepka

Billed as The Showdown, it will pit the PGA Tour’s two biggest stars against two standouts from LIV Golf.

The made-for-TV match pitting Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka finally has a home and a date.

Golfweek first reported plans for the event on Sept. 4, but the host course and date had not been agreed at that time. The match will take place at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Dec. 17. A formal announcement is expected later.

Billed as The Showdown, it will pit the PGA Tour’s two biggest stars against two standouts from LIV Golf and will air on TNT. Timing of the broadcast has not yet been confirmed, though multiple sources say it will conclude during prime time on the East Coast.

In a statement to Golfweek confirming the match last month, McIlroy said, “This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energize the fans. We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.”

The Showdown showcases four multiple major-winners, including reigning Masters champion and dominant world No. 1 Scheffler. In June, DeChambeau edged McIlroy by a single shot in a dramatic finish to win his second U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst No. 2. Two sources say the players will receive an appearance fee but will not compete for prize money. It’s understood that the 18-hole match will feature a mix of best-ball and alternate shot formats.

The Showdown is being created by Bryan Zuriff’s BZ Entertainment and EverWonder Studio. Zuriff was previously involved in The Match, a series of TV matches that launched in 2018 and which had featured McIlroy, DeChambeau and Koepka. EverWonder Studio was founded last year by former Sports Illustrated executive Ian Orefice and backed by Jeff Zucker’s RedBird IMI.

The Match: Looking back at all nine made-for-TV golf matches

Which version of The Match was your favorite?

It’s been nearly six years since the first edition of The Match, the made-for-TV series of silly season golf events featuring everyone from PGA Tour legends to current NFL and NBA all-stars.

In that time, golf fans have been treated to seven different matches, most recently the first to be played using a mixed-team format.

Even though the first edition of The Match – Woods vs. Phil Mickelson in November 2018 in Las Vegas – didn’t quite live up to the hype, it proved there was a market for the competition. Over the years the matches have grown into charitable causes benefitting COVID-19 relief and HBCU’s while still providing golf fans a unique product outside of 72-hole stroke-play tournaments.

Rory McIlroy, Max Homa, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang dish on Capital One’s The Match, mixed golf and playing under the lights

The 12-hole event will be live on TNT, truTV, HLN and streaming on Max starting at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Capital One’s The Match is back, and it’s unlike any version before.

For the first time, the live golf series event will feature mixed golf competition between Rory McIlroy, Max Homa, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang on Monday, Feb. 26, at “The Park” in West Palm Beach, Florida, under the lights.

The format is mixed skins, with each hole being worth a specified amount for charity.

All four golfers will utilize the same tees for the four par-3 holes in the routing, while the remaining eight holes will use varying tee boxes and yardages for the men and women. The golfer raising the most funds through the skins format at the end of the event will be declared the winner.

The 12-hole event will be live on TNT, truTV, HLN and streaming on Max starting at 6:30 p.m. ET.

On Thursday, the four golfers held a press conference with media members to discuss The Match, playing golf under the lights and what they look forward to when playing mixed competitions. Here’s what they had to say:

Watch: Tom Brady topping his opening tee shot at Pebble Beach may be the most relatable thing he has ever done

Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills finally got the better of Tom Brady at something.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Tom Brady may have seven Super Bowl rings, MVP trophies hanging around his house, been married to a super model and made gobs of money, but when it comes to golf he’s one of us.

Not since he ripped his pants in The Match has Brady, an eight handicap, been humbled by the game as publicly as topping his opening tee shot at the first hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Friday. Video cameras were rolling as Brady hit one of golf’s more embarrassing shots.

Brady was whisked away in a waiting vehicle after signing his scorecard so he didn’t have to face any questions but really, what is there to say about a shot like that?

In the battle of NFL quarterbacks, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills finally got the better of Tom Brady at something.

Allen said he’d never beaten him in anything – winless against Brady at the helm of the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well as competing in golf in The Match (Brady and Aaron Rodgers knocked off Allen and Patrick Mahomes) and in the AT&T Pro-Am previously.

It took going low on Friday at Pebble Beach but Allen edged Brady in the 36-hole pro-am portion of the tournament.

Allen and his pro partner Keith Mitchell shot 11-under 61 to tie for sixth at 14-under, two strokes better than Brady and his pro partner Keegan Bradley, who shot a pair of 66s.

“It feels pretty good,” Allen said, breaking into a wide smile as he acknowledged he also won a bet with Brady.

“Not monetary but some good pride and some other things. Felt good to beat him. Wish I would have had that happen on the football field, but we’ll take it where we can get it with him,” he said.

Asked about the wager, Allen said, “I can’t tell you that, I can’t tell you all my secrets. It’s something cool, it’s something you can put in your house.”

In a video posted by the PGA Tour, Allen can be heard saying to Brady, “You know what I want? Can I … what I want is a signed jersey.”

Allen said he contributed on about five holes, but failed to make a natural birdie on Friday.

“I had a few pars when I popped. I didn’t play up to my best, I don’t think, but I give myself some grace, haven’t played in about five or six months,” he said.

At 17-under, Rory McIlroy and Jeff Rhodes, a nine-handicap and co-chairman of TPG Capital, won the pro-am portion of the event by one stroke over Matt Fitzpatrick/George Still, Matthieu Pavon/Pascal Grizot and Patrick Cantlay/Egon Durban.

Rory McIlroy, Max Homa, Rose Zhang and Lexi Thompson to play in first mixed edition of ‘The Match’

Now this is going to be fun.

For the first time in its history, “The Match” series will feature two of the biggest stars in the women’s game, Rose Zhang and Lexi Thompson. Joining them will be Rory McIlroy and Max Homa, with the event slated for Feb. 26 at The Park golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Golfweek‘s Adam Schupak originally reported Zhang and Thompson’s involvement back in November 2023.

The made-for-TV event will be 12 holes, and the format will be skins. For a player to win a skin, they must win the hole outright. If two or more players tie for the best score on a hole, the skin carries over to the next hole.

All four players will use the same tee boxes on par 3s, while varying tee boxes will be used for the remaining holes. This match will benefit the First Tee program.

TNT’s broadcast team will include Charles Barley, Ernie Johnson, Trevor Immelman, Kathryn Tappen, Christina Kim, Paul Bissonnette and DJ Khaled.

The event will also be available to stream on Max.

LPGA stars Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang in talks to be first female competitors in ‘The Match’ in 2024

“I will acknowledge we’ve had some conversations but there are no intentions to have a Match in December.”

The LPGA could be making its debut in “The Match” in a mixed-team version before too long, Golfweek has learned.

According to multiple sources, the latest rendition of the made-for-TV event, which has featured PGA Tour stars and celebrities from the world of sports, is expected to include rookie phenom Rose Zhang and former major champion Lexi Thompson. The two male players being discussed are no slouches either: four-time major winner Rory McIlroy and Max Homa, who recently won the Nedbank Golf Challenge and appeared in Netflix’s PGA Tour-F1 mashup.

Rumors have been flying that The Match would be held at The Park Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday, Dec. 15, but Golfweek has confirmed that the exhibition has been delayed due to scheduling and other logistical challenges and won’t happen until the first quarter of 2024 or possibly in the second quarter of the year.

“I will acknowledge we’ve had some conversations but there are no intentions to have a Match in December,” said a source with knowledge of the event.

Last December, McIlroy teamed with Tiger Woods against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. Just as in that 18-hole competition in South Florida, the proposed match would be contested under the lights in primetime.

The Match has previously included Woods and Peyton Manning against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady, Bryson DeChambeau head-to-head against Brooks Koepka and most recently in the eighth installment in July between the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and the NBA’s Golden State Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. (The NFL pros came out on top, winning 3 and 2.)

In the past, WBD Sports has produced the event, which typically airs on TNT and utilizes Bleacher Report, which is also under the WBD umbrella, for exclusive digital coverage.

Zhang, 20, won the NCAA title at Stanford and Augusta National Women’s Amateur before turning pro in May and winning in her LPGA debut. She represented the U.S. in the Solheim Cup in September.

Thompson, 28, is an 11-time winner on the LPGA including the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship. The American has long been one of the most popular female golfers and played on the U.S. Solheim Cup team for the sixth time this year. She made headlines last month when she competed in the PGA Tour’s Shriners Children’s Open and nearly made the cut.

A source confirmed that when the ninth installment is held next year it isn’t expected to be a battle of sexes competition but rather a mixed-team match.

WATCH: Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes signed golf ball for fan struck in ‘The Match’

When #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes struck a bystander with a golf ball during “The Match” he made up for it with an autograph signing.

One of the dangers of watching a golf match played by amateurs is that you might get struck by a golf ball.

For one particular fan, getting hit with a ball during “The Match” will provide the memory of a lifetime and some special memorabilia to go along with it.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes pelted a young fan in the hip with a golf ball during the course of the charity golf game last Thursday. The ball hit the fan and then rolled back on the green to about 25 feet away from the hole. Mahomes made it up to the young fan, autographing a golf ball and his sideline credential.

“I’m going to sign a ball for you, my man,” Mahomes said. “Where did it hit you at?”

Mahomes even called over Travis Kelce to provide his autograph, though we didn’t get to see him sign anything.

Mahomes wasn’t the only one to hit a fan with a ball during the course of the game. Warriors star Klay Thompson also struck a fan in a much scarier incident.

As for the fan who encountered Mahomes’ golf ball, this is sure to be a memory that he’ll one day tell his kids and grandchildren about and he’ll have the golf ball and credential signature to prove it.

Here’s a look at some of the best moments captured from Mahomes and Kelce’s latest win:
