Kaleb Wesson to join Carmen’s Crew for TBT

Former Ohio State basketball big man Kaleb Wesson will be joining Carmen’s Crew for the next run at glory in The Basketball Tournament.

Over the last few years, the Ohio State alumni team in The Basketball Tournament has been one of the best. Now known as Carmen’s Crew, the team even took home the championship in the 2019 version.

But each year, the roster changes a little, even with most of it being comprised of former Ohio State basketball players. The nucleus of guys like Aaron Craft, Jon Diebler, and William Buford has always been there, but others have rotated in and out in an effort to continue to stay among the best.

This year, though we haven’t gotten official word on the entire roster, it now looks like former Buckeye big man Kaleb Wesson will be joining the team. This, according to an announcement Wesson made on his Jared Sullinger’s Twitter account Tuesday.

“Hey TBT (The Basketball Tournament), Kaleb Wesson here with Carmen’s Crew,” Wesson said. “Really excited to play in front of the hometown fans in Columbus, Ohio again. Buckeye Nation stand up!”

As more comes out on the roster makeup for Carmen’s Crew, we’ll be sure to have it for you. Until then, Go Bucks!

Ohio State named regional site for The Basketball Tournament (TBT)

Ohio State will be a regional host site for TBT from July 23-27. Former Buckeyes will compete again with Carmen’s Crew for the championship.

It was announced today that Ohio State would once again be a regional site for the 64 team tournament, known as TBT – The Basketball Tournament. Columbus will be one of four sites hosting regional action before heading to Dayton for the quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship games. Dates for games in the capital city will July 23-27.

The 2019 champion Carmen’s Crew will be a featured team in the region along with Dayton’s Red Scare. Carmen’s Crew which is made up of former Buckeyes has so far secured commitments from William Buford, David Lighty, Jon Diebler, and Evan Ravenel.

Jared Sullinger and Evan Turner will again serve as the team’s general manager/head coach and assistant coach, respectively. Although, there are some rumblings of trying to get Sullinger and possibly Aaron Craft to suit up for one more run.

Diebler for one is excited for the opportunity to play basketball once again with former teammates.

“Since 2017, TBT has been a summer staple for myself and my Ohio State teammates. We look forward to getting back together and playing in this great event each year, and we’ve really enjoyed being able to do it in Columbus the past four years. Playing on Ohio State’s campus in front of fans for the first time since we graduated will make this year’s TBT particularly special, and we can’t wait to compete in front of a hometown crowd once again.” said Diebler.

The Ohio State regional games will be played at the Covelli Center on campus which has a capacity of 3,700. Tickets for TBT will go on sale at a later date but will be sold at a limited capacity in accordance with local health and safety regulations.

This will be the fifth time the team has taken part in the winner-take-all single-elimination tourney, having won the whole thing in 2019.

There’s no information available on what players will be on this year’s team, but staples of the crew have been John Diebler, William Buford, Aaron Craft, David Lighty, and several others that seem to rotate in and out.

WATCH: Carmen’s Crew head coach Jared Sullinger explains why this year’s team is even better

The Ohio State alumni team known as Carmen’s Crew won the TBT last year. Head coach Jared Sullinger believes the team is even better.

Live basketball is back folks, and it’s by way of the winner-take-all basketball tournament known as — well, The Basketball Tournament.

You no doubt are aware that the Ohio State alumni squad that goes by the name of Carmen’s Crew won the whole thing last summer, and that it’s back for another run in Columbus for this year’s TBT. The squad certainly has some of the key players back, but there are some additions as well. After all, when so much money is on the line, you better look to get better because teams chasing you are sure putting efforts towards doing so.

So how is this year’s team shaping up? You’ll still see staples like Aaron Craft, William Buford, Jon Diebler, and David Lighty, but coach Jared Sullinger believes this team is better because of some of the players added.

“I think we got better just because we got bigger and we got Elam Ending (end of game format for the TBT) enders,” said Sullinger. “You got Deshaun Thomas, you have Dallas Lauderdale we added from coach to player, you got Malik Dime — we just got better across the board. We got ten guys we can play every night, every day, and be prepared to make a run with whoever’s out there on the floor with our team.”

You can listen to the entire interview by clicking on the below thanks to the Twitter profile of TBT.

Remember, Carmen’s Crew is set to face off against House of ‘Paign Wednesday at 4PM.

Big X advances to second round of The Basketball Tournament

Big X, a team with a couple of former Ohio State players, squeezed past D2 78-74 to advance to the 2nd round of The Basketball Tournament.

Most of you are likely following the Ohio State alumni team Carmen’s Crew during The Basketball Tournament, but there’s another team that has some former Buckeyes playing in the winner-take-all summer basketball tourney that has captured the fancy of many OSU fans over the last couple of years.

Team Big X did have more Buckeyes slated to play on the team, but the Wesson brothers decided not to play for personal reasons, and  Keyshawn Woods could not join the team because of exposure to COVID-19.

But that’s okay. Former Ohio State players C.J. Jackson and Andrew Dakich are still on the team and looking to make a deep run. So far so good, as the team advanced to the second round, but not without some struggles. Despite being the No. 9 seed and favored against No. 24 seed D2, Big X trailed for most of the game before finally wrestling the lead away late in the game with a little bit of a run.

Former Michigan State big man Nick Ward was huge down the stretch, providing two back-to-back dunks to give Big X the lead 70-69 when the Elam Ending was put into place. From there, C.J. Jackson hit a deep jumper as a part of a mini-run, then ended it with a tear-drop in the lane to reach the go past the targeted score of 78 to D2’s score of 74.

The next game should be fun for Big X as it faces an Ohio based team out of Dayton, the No. 8 seed Red Scare, at 2PM on Wednesday.

Michigan State alums Nick Ward, Javon Bess lead Big X to first round win in The Basketball Tournament

Ward led team Big X in scoring with 18 points.

Real live competitive basketball is back in the United States and two former Spartans are making early waves.

Former MSU basketball players Nick Ward and Javon Bess helped lead team Big X to a first-round 79 to 74 win over team D2–comprised of former D2 players–in The Basketball Tournament, a $1 million winner-take-all single-elimination summer basketball tournament. Ward, a rookie center for the College Park Skyhawks of the NBA G-League, led the way on offense, scoring a team-high 18 points to go with his five rebounds. Bess, who plays professionally for the Erie Bayhawks of the G-League, turned in a solid all-around performance with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Team Big X, the nine seed, advances to play Red Scare, the eight seed. Red Scare is comprised of a number of former Dayton basketball players.

Also taking part in the tournament are MSU alums Brendan Dawson and Brandon Wood. Those two will suit up for the No. 14 seed Team Heartfire. They take on Men of Mackey–a team made up of a number of Purdue alum–in the first round on Sunday, July 5 at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN.

Former Buckeye Trevor Thompson to join Dayton alumni team Red Scare for TBT

Former Ohio State big man Trevor Thomspon will be joining the Dayton alumni team Red Scare for The Basketball Tournament per a released.

We’ve got yet another former Ohio State basketball player that will be taking part in The Basketball Tournament. According to an announcement on Twitter by the Dayton alumni team known as The Red Scare, former Buckeye forward/center Trevor Thomspon has been added to the squad.

Thompson came to Ohio State by way of transfer from Virginia Tech and played two seasons in Columbus. He blossomed his last season, becoming a solid post presence that averaged 10.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks during Thad Matta’s last season in 2016-17.

With yet another Buckeye product in the field, it sets up a potentially intriguing matchup for round 2 if Big X — a team with Keyshawn Woods, Andrew Dakich, C.J. Jackson, and Jae’Sean Tate on it — can get by its first opponent. If so, The Red Scare would face off with Big X, with the winner potentially meeting defending champion and No. 1 seed Carmen’s Crew in the next round.

With all the games being played in Columbus at Nationwide Arena, and with so many ties to Ohio State, this edition of TBT is sure going to have a scarlet and gray feel to it. It’s just too bad there won’t be any fans in the stands to take it all in.

But set your DVRs now because it’s going to be a hoot.

Former Ohio State forward Jea’Sean Tate joins Big X for TBT

Former Ohio State basketball forward Jae’Sean Tate will be joining Big X for The Basketball Tournament per a release.

There’s another former Ohio State basketball player that will be taking part in the winner-take-all basketball tournament so adeptly named — The Basketball Tournament. Jae’Sean Tate, who bridged the coaching transition from Thad Matta to Chris Holtmann will be joining No. 9 seed Big X according to an announcement on Twitter.

Big X already has three former Buckeyes on the squad with C.J. Jackson, Andrew Dakich, and Keyshawn Woods, so his presence gives the team four more recent graduates and alums of Ohio State for fans to cheer for. It does however appear that the Wesson brothers have made a decision to not play with the team because it was “in their best professional interest” per a team spokesman. With the Kaleb and Andre, it would have made six OSU players on the team.

Of course, the other Ohio State alumni heavy team Carmen’s Crew, is the defending champions and No. 1 seed. It has seven former Ohio State players from the glory days of the Matta era.

Over his four-year career with Ohio State, Tate became known for his tenacity and hard work in and around the rim. His peers looked up to him as a team captain, and he was the heart and soul of a couple of those teams that struggled to meet expectations.

He averaged 11.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 28 minutes per game over the four years in Columbus. The Basketball Tournament is all set to kick off in 13 days at Nationwide Arena.
