Texas softball’s season comes to an end with super regional loss to Tennessee

Texas softball’s season ends in the super regionals.

Texas softball’s season has come to an end after dropping game two of the super regional to Tennessee 9-0. The Tennessee victory clinches a spot in Oklahoma City for the first time since 2015.

The Longhorns trailed 1-0 entering the fifth inning before chaos broke loose and the Vols broke the game open. Texas’ bats struggled to get anything going for the entirety of the contest, only picking up two base hits.

Texas still has tons to hang their hat on from the 2023 season. Mike White’s team went 45-15, swept through the Austin Regional and made a fourth straight super regional.

Losing out just shy of the Women’s College World Series always stings, but the Longhorns have reasons for optimism. The future is bright for this Texas team as they return a strong core of young players next season.

No. 13 Texas drops game one of Super Regional to No. 4 Tennessee

Texas softball looks to bounce back on Saturday.

No. 13 Texas softball is now facing elimination following a game one loss to No. 4 Tennessee in the Knoxville Super Regional.

The Lady Vols used a four-run second inning to beat the Longhorns 5-2, moving just one game away from the Women’s College World Series.

Texas’ comeback effort was cut short despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning.

Mike White’s team is in a bit of a familiar situation with their backs against the wall. The Longhorns dropped the first game of a Super Regional against Arkansas last season before making a run all the way to the national title series.

Game two of the Knoxville Super Regional is set to take place Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. Texas hopes to force a winner-take-all game three on Sunday.

Rick Barnes and No. 4 Tennessee got the better of No. 10 Texas on Saturday night in its Big 12/SEC challenge matchup. The Vols controlled the game from start to finish, cruising to an 82-71 victory.

Rebounding was the story of the game as Tennessee dominated the boards, outrebounding Texas 38-24. The Horns’ defense had no answers for Tennessee’s Olivier Nkamhoua and Zakai Zeigler. Both Vols scored over 20 points in the win.

Sir’Jabari Rice led the way for Texas with a solid 21-point effort. Four of five Texas starters were held under 10 points for the first time all season.

No. 1 Texas takes down No. 17 Tennessee 7-2, improving to 10-0

Trey Faltine’s home run sparked Texas’ offense in its 7-2 victory over Tennessee.

In a rematch of two Omaha teams from a season ago, No. 1 Texas got the better of No. 17 Tennesse yet again. The Longhorns took down the Vols 7-2, behind stellar performances from Pete Hansen and Ivan Melendez.

Pitching dominated the game early on. Both Pete Hansen and Tennesse starter Chase Burns were in cruise control before giving up solo home runs in the fifth inning.

Hansen finished his day after going six innings, allowing one run with five strikeouts. The lefty picked up his second victory on the season.

Trey Faltine got the offense going for the Horns with a monster home run to tie things up in the fifth.

Texas broke the game open in the next inning. Eric Kennedy and Ivan Melendez led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to take the lead. A Tennessee error and a Skyler Messinger single later put Texas up 4-1.

Things got a bit dicey in the seventh for Texas. The Vols got to Texas reliever Travis Stehle to cut the score to 4-2, but a clutch strikeout from freshman Luke Harrison left the tying runs stranded.

Texas added a few insurance runs as Aaron Nixon closed the door on game one of the Shinner’s Hospital Classic.

A top 10 matchup vs. LSU is up next for the Longhorns.
