Steve Sarkisian says Texas S Jalen Catalon likely won’t play on Saturday

The Longhorns will likely be without their hard-hitting safety on Saturday against Kansas State.

During Thursday’s media press conference, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian mentioned that safety Jalen Catalon likely won’t be available for Saturday’s game against No. 23 Kansas State.

Catalon is playing his first year with the Longhorns after transferring from Arkansas in December. The hard-hitting safety has unfortunately had nagging injuries all season, forcing him not to play as much as he would like.

The senior safety has one forced fumble and 15 total tackles on the year and makes an immediate impact when he is on the field.

If Catalon can stay healthy down the stretch, the Longhorns’ defense will benefit significantly from his hard-hitting and playmaking abilities.

By the numbers: How No. 7 Texas compares to No. 23 Kansas State

Can the Longhorns hold off the Wildcats at home this week?

On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff committee released their first rankings of the season, placing Texas at No. 7 and Kansas State at No. 23.

The Longhorns will need help from other teams if they want to make the College Football Playoff, but most importantly, they must take it one game at a time.

What stands in Texas’ way is the Kansas State Wildcats. They are an excellent rushing team, averaging 226 yards per game.

Their rushing attack is led by DJ Giddens and Treshaun Ward, combining for nearly 1,200 yards. Quarterbacks Will Howard and Avery Johnson also have accounted for over 530 rushing yards on the year.

The Wildcat’s defense isn’t a pushover, either. KSU allows 16 points per game and 340 yards per game.

As the No. 7 Texas Longhorns prepare to host the No. 23 Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT, here are the numbers comparing the two teams for the tough conference matchup.

No. 21 Texas takes series over Kansas State with an 8-2 win

Texas sits in sole possession of first place in the Big 12.

Two-out hitting and a solid pitching performance helped No. 21 Texas take the series over Kansas State on Sunday. The 8-2 victory gives Texas sole possession of first place in the Big 12 Conference following the weekend’s slate.

Dylan Campbell and Porter Brown led the Longhorns’ offensive charge. Campbell went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in a key moment in the ballgame. Brown continued his hot streak with a 2-for-4 day including a no-doubt home run.

Charlie Hurley set the tone on the mound tossing five innings of two-run baseball. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth frame to earn his third win of the season.

DJ Burke was brilliant in relief of Hurley. The Longhorn righty gave Texas 3.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Texas is back on the field on a quick turnaround as they travel down I-35 for a midweek matchup with Texas State on Monday night.
