Baylor Week: Will Texas play to the standard or to its opponent?

Expect another close game unless Texas starts playing to the standard this week.

The Texas Longhorns take on the Baylor Bears on Saturday. It poses another challenge for the team, albeit the challenge would be of Texas’ own making.

The Longhorns have played substandard football in two of their first three games. And as much as we have made of starting quarterback Quinn Ewers’ improvement, he is still completing just 60.7 percent of his passes this season. The completion rate is better than last season, but not good by any stretch.

Texas receivers are certainly culpable for Ewers’ low completion percentage. The unit has dropped catchable passes and missed on several other catchable footballs. Even so, there’s a marked difference between Ewers against Alabama and how he plays against lesser opponents.

The focus hasn’t been there for both Ewers and his receivers this season, and the lackadaisical nature of the passing game has led to unimpressive results. Texas might be 3-0 now, but it won’t be for long if the passing game continues to be inefficient.

On the flip side, a focused effort this week could lead to a strong performance against Baylor this weekend. Texas needs to play to a championship-level standard it wants championship results. If it does, the Longhorns should beat the Bears comfortably on Saturday.

Texas has the skill advantage to unleash aerial attack on Baylor

If Quinn Ewers can hit the throws he made against Alabama, Texas receivers can torch the Baylor secondary.

Texas takes on a vulnerable Baylor secondary on Saturday. Given the Longhorns’ arsenal of receiving weapons, it could torch the Bears secondary downfield. It all comes down to how well its quarterback Quinn Ewers can deliver the football.

The Baylor defense struggled at best against the Texas State Bobcats and college football journeyman TJ Finley. Finley launched 30 passes and completed 22 to finish with 298 passing yards and three touchdowns. The passing game should be there for opposition.

Texas is better suited than any of Baylor’s past three opponents to attack the Bears secondary. The dynamic receiving trio of Xavier Worthy, Ja’Tavion Sanders and Adonai Mitchell went off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2. It went conspicuously absent against the Wyoming Cowboys last weekend.

Baylor does not have the athletes to match Worthy, Mitchell or Sanders in coverage downfield. Its only chance is to muddy the game and force Ewers off target. If Sarkisian can get Ewers in the position to make key throws, Texas can score on downfield shots in this game.

A couple explosive plays from Texas could be too difficult for the Bears to overcome. The Longhorns would do well to land one or two explosive plays early in Saturday’s matchup.

Can Texas finally beat Baylor?

The Texas Longhorns have a huge matchup with the Baylor Bears on Monday night. The basketball game presents Texas with an opportunity to beat Baylor for the first time in seven tries.

The Longhorns have been abysmal against Baylor in recent seasons. They have Shaka Smart to thank for much of that, but even Chris Beard couldn’t earn a win over the once sleeping giant.

Baylor has won 12 of the last 13 meetings dating back to 2016. Since they met in the 2009 Big 12 tournament, the Bears are 21-8 against the Longhorns.

While Scott Drew’s team is not the juggernaut it has been the last three seasons, Baylor is still a formidable foe for Texas.

Here’s a look at the last 10 meetings between the two teams.

What To Watch: Texas (7-4) takes on Baylor (6-5)

Texas takes on Baylor for bragging rights at 11 am CT on ESPN.

The Texas Longhorns take on the Baylor Bears at 11 a.m. CT on Friday. The pivotal game will take place before a national audience on ESPN.

The Longhorns have done their best when doubted and dismissed by the national sports media. Friday’s game presents another opportunity for Steve Sarkisian and company to win a game without the college football media singing Texas’ praises.

At stake for the team is an 8-4 regular season record and an outside chance at a Big 12 championship. The Baylor Bears have other plans.

Baylor has disappointed after a conference title victory last season. The Bears are struggling most on the defensive side, as opponents have gashed them in spurts this season.

The winner of the game can finish the season with positive momentum and secure better bowl positioning. Let’s look at what to watch in the game.

Black Friday: Five reasons Texas should defeat Baylor

Texas can finish 8-4 and push for a Big 12 title spot.

It’s a tough week to be a Baylor Bear. In recent weeks, the team has seen their conference title hopes disintegrate with consecutive home losses.

The week doesn’t get any easier for Baylor. They will now face a Texas team coming off its best performance of the season.

Texas didn’t get much from the passing game, but it didn’t matter much. The Longhorns ran for 427 yards against Kansas last week, led by Bijan Robinson’s 243-yard game. Jonathon Brooks broke 100 yards as well.

This year’s Baylor team will present new challenges for Texas as Blake Shapen has raised their offensive ceiling. Nevertheless, Steve Sarkisian should have a sizable talent advantage given what the Bears lost to the 2022 NFL Draft.

Here are five reasons Texas should beat Baylor on Friday.

Texas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns aren’t shooting well …

And they’re winning. Why? The defense is holding up.

It got the job done when needed ay home against Kansas. It shut down Iowa State and held on against Tennessee with plenty of steals and timely stops.

Even with Kansas going Kansas in 79-76 Longhorn win, Texas still leads the nation in scoring defense. Teams just aren’t consistently able to rely on the three, and Texas just doesn’t turn the ball over enough to lead to easy points.

However …

Why Baylor Will Win

Here comes the Baylor offense.

It’s been a wild ride over the last several games, but now it’s back at home and the threes are going to be on the way.

No, it’s not going to make this into any sort of a track meet, but it’s moving the ball around well and it will come up with its share of takeaways and stops.

It’s fine with a low scoring game. It’ll get the ball moving around and be more than happy to make this about hitting threes.

There’s one big problem, though …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

All of a sudden the Baylor defense is awful.

It can’t stop decent shooting teams from hitting their shots, and they’re not consistent enough when their own threes aren’t taking over games.

But they’ve also been on the road a whole lot lately and now they’re back in Waco.

For all of the team’s problems and inconsistencies, it’s still 20-4 for a reason. Texas is very much a home court team – just 2-5 in road games – and Baylor will be able to handle the tight defensive game that stays close late.

The Bears will miss too many free throws to pull away, but they’ll close it out with one big three to survive.

Texas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

It’s desperation time for the rested Longhorns.

They’ve had two weeks off after losing to Oklahoma State, that was coming off the loss to Oklahoma, and now they need to win out to be in the mix for the Big 12 Championship.

The offense was stuffed by the Cowboys, and the running game hasn’t been great, but the firepower is there to make this a shootout. Baylor’s offense has been inconsistent – great over the last two weeks, mediocre against Iowa State and Oklahoma State – having problems on third downs.

Again, Baylor has been hit or miss – it was great on third downs early on and against BYU, and wasn’t against the Cyclones and Cowboys. Texas has been phenomenal on third downs and has to keep the chains moving on this group, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Baylor Will Win

The Baylor offense took it up a few notches.

It started off great against a few bad teams to start the season – again – struggled against the two good defenses – and then threw well in the 25-point win over West Virginia and rolled for 534 yards with one of the most impressively balanced days of the year in the 14-point win over BYU.

It starts with the ground attack. It didn’t do much for a stretch, but the offensive line took over against BYU and Abram Smith made the most of it with a 188-yard, three-score day.

The Texas run defense lost to Arkansas when it couldn’t stop the run, and lost to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State when it was run over. So …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Texas is 4-0 when allowing offenses to run for fewer than 200 yards, and it’s 0-3 when allowing 200 or more. However, outside of Louisiana, Texas hasn’t beaten a team that could run all that well.

At home, Baylor will keep the momentum going from the BYU win in a fun, back-and-forth battle. The Bears will be steady enough to overcome the Texas home runs.

Why Baylor Will Win

At the very least, the Bears are rested. They haven’t played since October 3rd, and they’ve had plenty of time to prepare for the Longhorn offense. More importantly, they’ve had time to get ready to attack a defense that’s not stopping anyone.

Want to throw on the Longhorns? Go ahead – it’s allowing enough downfield plays to keep giving it a shot. Want to run the ball? TCU and Oklahoma both rolled for over 200 yards.

It’s been just two games, but the Bears have been able to keep the defensive pressure going from last year – registering 18 tackles for loss and six sacks – and they should keep the pressure on Sam Ehinger and company.

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why Texas Will Win

The Texas defense might have a problem, but the offense has been rolling. A lot of the big plays might be coming in comeback mode, but the passing attack is averaging over 300 yards per game, and when it pounds away, the ground game works, too.

Baylor might have a slew of nice playmakers, but it doesn’t have the machine Texas has. It leads the nation in scoring, and it can move the ball however it wants to.

No, the Longhorn defense hasn’t tackled well and it’s a problem, but it leads the Big 12 in takeaways. The line can generate pressure, too.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s 2020 Texas in the Big 12. It’s going to play to the level of the competition, it’ll be down, it’ll be hopelessly out of it at one point with nothing quite going right, and then Sam Ehlinger will get hot and bring the team right back within range of pulling it off.

Only, Texas won’t have to work as hard as it did in the win over Texas Tech, and it won’t buckle like it did against TCU and Oklahoma.

At least for a little while, the team will be good enough to take the focus off of “The Eyes of Texas” controversy.
