Texas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns aren’t shooting well …

And they’re winning. Why? The defense is holding up.

It got the job done when needed ay home against Kansas. It shut down Iowa State and held on against Tennessee with plenty of steals and timely stops.

Even with Kansas going Kansas in 79-76 Longhorn win, Texas still leads the nation in scoring defense. Teams just aren’t consistently able to rely on the three, and Texas just doesn’t turn the ball over enough to lead to easy points.

However …

Why Baylor Will Win

Here comes the Baylor offense.

It’s been a wild ride over the last several games, but now it’s back at home and the threes are going to be on the way.

No, it’s not going to make this into any sort of a track meet, but it’s moving the ball around well and it will come up with its share of takeaways and stops.

It’s fine with a low scoring game. It’ll get the ball moving around and be more than happy to make this about hitting threes.

There’s one big problem, though …

What’s Going To Happen

All of a sudden the Baylor defense is awful.

It can’t stop decent shooting teams from hitting their shots, and they’re not consistent enough when their own threes aren’t taking over games.

But they’ve also been on the road a whole lot lately and now they’re back in Waco.

For all of the team’s problems and inconsistencies, it’s still 20-4 for a reason. Texas is very much a home court team – just 2-5 in road games – and Baylor will be able to handle the tight defensive game that stays close late.

The Bears will miss too many free throws to pull away, but they’ll close it out with one big three to survive.

Texas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

It’s desperation time for the rested Longhorns.

They’ve had two weeks off after losing to Oklahoma State, that was coming off the loss to Oklahoma, and now they need to win out to be in the mix for the Big 12 Championship.

The offense was stuffed by the Cowboys, and the running game hasn’t been great, but the firepower is there to make this a shootout. Baylor’s offense has been inconsistent – great over the last two weeks, mediocre against Iowa State and Oklahoma State – having problems on third downs.

Again, Baylor has been hit or miss – it was great on third downs early on and against BYU, and wasn’t against the Cyclones and Cowboys. Texas has been phenomenal on third downs and has to keep the chains moving on this group, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Baylor Will Win

The Baylor offense took it up a few notches.

It started off great against a few bad teams to start the season – again – struggled against the two good defenses – and then threw well in the 25-point win over West Virginia and rolled for 534 yards with one of the most impressively balanced days of the year in the 14-point win over BYU.

It starts with the ground attack. It didn’t do much for a stretch, but the offensive line took over against BYU and Abram Smith made the most of it with a 188-yard, three-score day.

The Texas run defense lost to Arkansas when it couldn’t stop the run, and lost to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State when it was run over. So …

What’s Going To Happen

Texas is 4-0 when allowing offenses to run for fewer than 200 yards, and it’s 0-3 when allowing 200 or more. However, outside of Louisiana, Texas hasn’t beaten a team that could run all that well.

At home, Baylor will keep the momentum going from the BYU win in a fun, back-and-forth battle. The Bears will be steady enough to overcome the Texas home runs.

Why Baylor Will Win

At the very least, the Bears are rested. They haven’t played since October 3rd, and they’ve had plenty of time to prepare for the Longhorn offense. More importantly, they’ve had time to get ready to attack a defense that’s not stopping anyone.

Want to throw on the Longhorns? Go ahead – it’s allowing enough downfield plays to keep giving it a shot. Want to run the ball? TCU and Oklahoma both rolled for over 200 yards.

It’s been just two games, but the Bears have been able to keep the defensive pressure going from last year – registering 18 tackles for loss and six sacks – and they should keep the pressure on Sam Ehinger and company.

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why Texas Will Win

The Texas defense might have a problem, but the offense has been rolling. A lot of the big plays might be coming in comeback mode, but the passing attack is averaging over 300 yards per game, and when it pounds away, the ground game works, too.

Baylor might have a slew of nice playmakers, but it doesn’t have the machine Texas has. It leads the nation in scoring, and it can move the ball however it wants to.

No, the Longhorn defense hasn’t tackled well and it’s a problem, but it leads the Big 12 in takeaways. The line can generate pressure, too.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s 2020 Texas in the Big 12. It’s going to play to the level of the competition, it’ll be down, it’ll be hopelessly out of it at one point with nothing quite going right, and then Sam Ehlinger will get hot and bring the team right back within range of pulling it off.

Only, Texas won’t have to work as hard as it did in the win over Texas Tech, and it won’t buckle like it did against TCU and Oklahoma.

At least for a little while, the team will be good enough to take the focus off of “The Eyes of Texas” controversy.
