Texas Tech football called out the College GameDay crew for unanimously picking Iowa State

Texas Tech pulled off the upset and handed Iowa State its first loss of the season.

Unranked Texas Tech pulled off a stunning 23-22 upset on the road against No. 11 Iowa State on Saturday during Week 10 of the college football season, handing the previously undefeated Cyclones their first loss of the season.

Iowa State entered this game with a top-20 defense and was a 13.5-point favorite over the Red Raiders. Combine those factors with the Cyclones’ home-field advantage and Texas Tech riding a two-game losing streak — including a double-digit loss to a not good Baylor team — and it makes sense why many people figured Iowa State would win and stay undefeated.

That’s the direction ESPN’s College GameDay crew took when making picks for Iowa State-Texas Tech. Desmond Howard, Nick Saban, Pat McAfee, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and guest picker (and professional James Franklin impersonator) Keegan-Michael Key unanimously picked the Cyclones to win.

Well, the social media folks behind Texas Tech football’s Twitter account took note, and after a late touchdown gave the Red Raiders the lead and eventually the upset win, they perfectly trolled the GameDay crew’s incorrect picks.

For what it’s worth, the majority of For The Win’s picks against the spread this week went with Texas Tech at least covering, if not winning outright.

Trailing 22-17 with 20 seconds left on the fourth-quarter clock, Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks ran for a five-yard touchdown to give his team a one-point lead after a failed two-point conversion, and the Red Raiders held on for the victory.

Choose your Big 12 fake field goal: BYU’s double snap or Texas Tech’s shoulder flip

Big 12 fake field goals!

The Big 12 went wild with the field goal fakes on Saturday.

During Brigham Young University’s road game against UCF, the team pulled off a very rare double snap on a field goal attempt that sent kicker Will Ferrin running for a successful first down.

You don’t often see two snaps on the same play, but BYU somehow pulled it off to maximum effect to keep the drive alive.

The other saw Texas Tech placekicker Reese Burkhardt snag a flip over the holder’s shoulder after the long snap and run it in for a touchdown against hosting TCU.

Both of these very savvy fake field goals helped out the teams bold enough to run them. After all, fortune favors those who don’t kick.

UPDATE: We have ANOTHER Big 12 fake field goal, this time from West Virginia.

Danny Amendola paid tribute to Mike Leach with a touching routine on Dancing with the Stars

This is such a cool gesture from Danny Amendola to his late college coach.

Paying homage to his late college coach, former NFL wide receiver Danny Amendola was a big winner on Tuesday night’s latest Dancing with the Stars.

Amendola and his dance partner, Witney Carson, performed a routine in honor of former college football coach Mike Leach.

Amendola played for Leach at Texas Tech, and it’s evident he wanted to make his former coach proud with this well-received dance routine.

“He told us to dream, that we could pay through hard work and dedication,” Amendola said on the broadcast about Leach. “Being a coach is a very selfless job, and I miss him dearly… This one’s for him.”

To make it even cooler, Amendola stayed in the competition for another week with this touching tribute.

‘Best convention in the country,’ Aggies coach Mike Elko speaks to media at THSCA meetings

“It’s just a great opportunity for our staff to get out here and mingle with other colleges in the state and with all the high school guys.”

Unlike his predecessor Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko made it a priority to attend the Texas High School Coaches Association convention this week.

“This is a really cool event. We’ve talked a lot about how important the Texas High School Coaches Association is, how important our relationship is with that group. But also how we are as servants to the high school coaches in this state and the role that we play in kinda helping young coaches develop and aspiring coaches get better,” Elko explained Monday. “It’s an awesome opportunity to come out here, it’s one of the best conventions, if not the best convention in the country. It’s just a great opportunity for our staff to get out here and mingle with other staffs of colleges in the state and also with all the high school guys.

“We’re excited to be here and to do our part to brand football in this state and continue the great reputation of football in the state of Texas.”

The Aggies host Notre Dame at Kyle Field on Aug. 31 to begin the season.

Social media reacts as Texas breaks Texas Tech, 57-7

Former Oklahoma defensive tackle Dusty Dvorcic described the performance best: “Domination in every phase.”

The Texas Longhorns broke the Texas Tech Red Raiders. They broke big runs, broke up passes and ultimately broke the Raiders’ will.

Color analyst and former Oklahoma defensive tackle Dusty Dvorcic described the performance best: “Domination in every phase.”

The Texas offense had its way on the field save for first half red zone struggles. The team bullied its way to 299 total yards by halftime and ran up the total in the second half.

Texas backup quarterback Arch Manning saw action with over two minutes left in the third quarter. He took the field to loud approval from Longhorns faithful eager to see the former five-star recruit in action.

Defensively, Longhorns cornerbacks were all over Red Raider routes more often than not. Texas stuck to Texas Tech receivers like glue on the way to three interceptions and disrupted passes that would fall to the ground.

Here’s how social media took in the game.

First Half Highlights: Texas leads Texas Tech, 26-7

Texas missed opportunities, but dominated the first half against Texas Tech.

The final Big 12 matchup between the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders is underway in Austin. The first quarter was eventful.

The Raiders have been beaten decisively by the Longhorns for much of the night, but not without suspense. The 26-7 score might not even indicate just how dominant the performance has been. Texas Tech’s opportunistic defense limited damage with stops on third downs and turnovers to slow the Texas attack in the first half.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers started the game on fire completing his first six passes on his way to an easy touchdown drive on the first possession. Ewers and receivers Jordan Whittington, Xavier Worthy and Ja’Tavion Sanders were on the same page for much of the early going. The passing attack has since cooled with the team putting up just 26 points on 299 offensive yards.

The Texas defense has dominated the game for the most part. Save for a touchdown drive, the Longhorns surrendered very little to the Red Raiders in the first half. Texas Tech has 108 yards of offense at the intermission.

Since Tech’s only touchdown, Texas has separated and extended its lead. Here are a few of the highlights from the first half.
