Los Angeles Times columnist explores the idea that Pac-12, Big 12 might be punishing USC and Texas

Zero penalties were enforced against Oklahoma State. Texas: 14. Coincidence? One @LATimesSports columnist is asking questions after USC-Utah and Texas-OSU.

Our story begins with a recollection of the night before Lincoln Riley was hired by USC.

The Oklahoma Sooners visited the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The winner would go to the Big 12 Championship game.

I watched that game live, not knowing that Lincoln Riley would be the head coach of USC 24 hours later (to be precise, fewer than 20 hours later).

In the second half, Oklahoma wasn’t necessarily wronged, but every 50-50 call went against the Sooners.

The reality that Oklahoma was heading for the SEC and leaving the Big 12 crossed my mind. Oklahoma fans and bloggers were thinking the same thing.

Fast-forward to another game at Oklahoma State involving the other Big 12 team about to leave for the SEC.

Columnist J. Brady McCollough of the Los Angeles Times explored the idea that the Big 12 is punishing the schools leaving for the SEC, and that the Pac-12 is punishing USC for leaving for the Big Ten.

Let’s dive into McCollough’s piece and add some other insights:

No. 20 Texas leads No. 11 Oklahoma State 31-24 at the half

Defense is at a premium in Stillwater.

We have no storage of fireworks in Stillwater after an offensive slugfest between No. 20 Texas and No. 11 Oklahoma State. The Longhorns lead by a score of 31-24 at the half.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has not been sharp to start the game. He is 11-for-24 for 190 yards and two scores despite missing multiple easy throws. Ewers’ interception on the Longhorns’ first drive set Oklahoma State up to take a 3-0 lead.

The Texas running backs are enjoying a great game thus far. Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson have combined for 161 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Robinson added a 41-yard receiving touchdown for good measure.

Oklahoma State’s offense is slicing through Texas’ defense with ease. The Pokes have over 300 total yards as the Longhorns can not slow down the quick passing attack.

Spencer Sanders is 20-for-33 for 208 yards and an interception. His mobility continues to give Texas problems, as he has 39 yards on seven carries.

Penalties have been entirely one-sided as Texas has been penalized 11 times compared to Oklahoma State’s zero.

Texas brings in a potent offensive attack that is leading the Big 12 conference in batting average, home runs and on-base percentage. The Longhorns offense is led by powerful first baseman Ivan Melendez. Melendez is hitting close to .400 on the season with the country’s best 21 home runs.

Oklahoma State enters with a lineup balanced from top-to-bottom. Left fielder Jake Thompson leads the Pokes with a .333 batting average and eight home runs.

Both teams feature an ace amongst the best in the country in Pete Hansen (Texas) and Justin Campbell (Oklahoma State). Runs will be at a premium in Friday night’s matchup against two All-American talents.

Oklahoma State vs Texas Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Very, very, very, very quietly, Oklahoma State is still undefeated and doing just about everything right as it just keeps on winning.

There might not be a giant national splashy win, but the Cowboys won at Boise State. They beat a Kansas State team that pushed Oklahoma, and they just ran over a Baylor squad that’s been getting a whole lot of credit for being okay.

And now it gets a Texas team that won’t be able to put the collapse against Oklahoma in the rearview mirror, no matter how much everyone says they’re moving on.

What’s Oklahoma State doing that’s so right? The defensive line is getting its mail in opposing backfields. That’s leading to a ton of third down stops and a whole lot of control in key moments.

On the other side, the offensive line is doing a terrific job in pass protection, even if the running game isn’t all that great. However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense has yet to open it up, and it might have to this week.

Oklahoma had to make a dramatic shift in quarterbacks that might end up changing the entire program to beat Texas last week. That’s because the Longhorn offense was amazing, with Casey Thompson throwing for 388 yards and five scores.

Bijan Robinson tore off a Heisman-caliber run, the offensive line has been good enough to live everything work, and the Big 12’s No. 1 offense has been ultra-efficient outside of the rough go late against OU.

Get up early this week, and make Oklahoma State rally. The Cowboys might have the ability to pull off a big comeback, but it hasn’t needed to do it yet.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Just how quickly can Texas get it back?

There’s no time for a hangover here with three road trips in the next four games. A loss doesn’t end any hope of getting another shot at Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship, but it would be a severe blow.

Oklahoma State can certainly throw, and the offense has been more than fine – this teams plays up or down to its competition – but the Texas attack will get its balance back fast.

The Cowboy defensive front and the pass rush will keep this game in range, but in third straight Big 12 thriller for the Longhorns, they’ll rise up at home on two big late drives.

Why Texas Will Win

Oklahoma State has been just okay in 2021. It beat Kansas, but lost to TCU. It couldn’t get past West Virginia or Baylor, and the wins were against the relative layups.

It’s a good team, but it struggles a bit defensively, makes way too many mistakes, and it’s just a bit too inconsistent. It lost to Texas back in late December when it couldn’t hit from three and gave up a massive 42 rebounds, and this might be a repeat.

The Longhorns are great on the boards and tremendous at defending the three, but …

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys are shooting well lately. The wins might not quite be there like they should be, but the team has hit 45% or more of its shots in seven of the last eight games and it couldn’t get enough easy baskets against Iowa State and Arkansas.

And why? They’re outstanding at coming up with assists and moving the ball around enough to overcome most of their turnovers.

Yeah, Texas does a whole lot of things right, but it lost three of its last four games despite shooting the lights out. Playing Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Baylor had something to do with that, but going 1-3 on a home stretch stinks at this time of year.

What’s Going To Happen

The two teams are playing close to even lately. Texas is doing a bit more offensively, Oklahoma State is moving the ball around better, and both teams are good on the boards to make up for a slew of mistakes.

The home team will come up with a fewer errors and just a few more key shots in a close game throughout.

WATCH: Joseph Ossai’s walk-off sack seals Texas upset vs. Oklahoma State

Watch Texas pass rusher Joseph Ossai seal an upset victory over Oklahoma State with a walk-off sack

Texas has one of the nation’s best edge rushers in Joseph Ossai, and he came up big when it mattered most Saturday night.

Down by seven and facing a 4th-and-8 just 12 yards from a game-tying touchdown, No. 6 Oklahoma State had one last chance to force overtime in the final moments of regulation.

Ossai had other plans, chasing down Cowboys quarterback Spencer Sanders for the sack, sealing the upset win for the Longhorns.

One of the top edge defenders in the 2021 NFL draft class, Ossai has been making big plays all year, and could end up crashing the first round come next April.
