More praise for the Texas quarterback room, ranked among the best in the nation

Another publication has the Texas quarterback room among the best in the nation. Here is how they stack up against the rest of the SEC.

The Texas Longhorns have plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball led by the quarterbacks. Heading into the 2024 college football season the two-deep depth chart has a pair of former five-star prospects at the top.

Quinn Ewers is the returning starter with Arch Manning serving as the backup and future of the program. All eyes seem to be on the latter given that he is the Manning family scion.

Pro Football Focus recently named the Longhorns quarterback room among the five best in the nation. ESPN (subscription required) followed suit by naming them among the top tier in the country along with three other teams. Two of those teams are in the SEC along with the Horns, the other is the Oregon Ducks.

What makes Ewers special is his numbers when trailing per ESPN.

Ewers when Texas was trailing at any point last season: 72.7% completions, five touchdowns, one interception, 10.3 yards/attempt and 15% of his throws went for at least 20 yards.

When it comes to your quarterback, you need him at his best during crunch time and Ewers certainly proved to be the man for the job last season.

Best images of Texas’ 1-0 win over Stanford, clinching spot in championship series

Some of the best images of Texas win over Stanford which put the Horns in the best of three championship series.

The Texas Longhorns are heading to the best-of-three WCWS championship series. The opponent will be decided when the Oklahoma Sooners and Florida Gators meet on Tuesday for the rematch from UF’s 9-3 win on Monday.

The Longhorns will rest up and get ready for huge series. Texas earned a spot in the title series by beating the Stanford Cardinal, 1-0. It was the second time since Thursday that the Horns knocked off Stanford in a shutout win. Both times standout freshman pitcher Teagan Kavan was in the circle.

In those two games combined, Kavan pitched 14 inning with just two hits allowed, five walks, and 15 strikeouts. In between her two starts, Mac Morgan took the circle against the Florida Gators pitching five innings giving up one hit and one walk while striking out five. The Texas pitching staff has yet to give up a run or more than one hit in a game. Dominating stuff.

Check out these images from the latest victory by the Texas Longhorns softball squad.

Texas softball beats No. 8 Stanford to advance to the WCWS championship series

Texas softball awaits Tuesday’s showdown between Florida and Oklahoma to see who they will meet in the national title

The No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns softball team has officially advanced to the Women’s College World Series final after knocking off No. 8 Stanford 1-0 Monday evening. The Longhorns and the Cardinals also met in the first round of the World Series where Texas also won 4-0.

Round two of Teagan Kavan and NiJaree Canady was as advertised. It went all the way to the seventh inning with no score as these two pitchers went back and forth shutting down the offense. It wasn’t until Texas captain Alyssa Washington slid under the tag at home plate that the Horns got on the board. Kavan pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh to send the Longhorns to the championship series.

The Texas ladies will have Tuesday off as they await the result of Tuesday’s game between the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners and No. 4 Florida Gators. The Longhorns got a 2-1 series victory in Austin against the Sooners in early April, but they could not knock them off in the Big 12 Championship as they lost 5-1. The Longhorns also took on the Gators in their second World Series game where they run-ruled them 10-0 after 5 innings.

History of the Sooners program tells us that we likely get one final showdown between Texas and Oklahoma in the national title series before they both head off to join the SEC next season.

Texas target and four-star defensive lineman sets commitment date for Jul. 4

Texas could add to their 2025 class on Independence Day.

While the Texas Longhorns could be on flip alert with one of their four-star commitments, they might be close to getting another pledge at the position. 2025 four-star defensive lineman Zion Williams of Lufkin, Texas, has set Jul. 4 as his commitment date.

The Lufkin native is ranked as a top 300 overall prospect at No. 294 and No. 33 at his position per the 247Sports composite rankings. Williams is considering the Texas Longhorns along with the LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, and the TCU Horned Frogs.

He announced his commitment date on X, formerly Twitter. The Longhorns have two commitments at the position so far in the 2025 cycle led by Lance Jackson of Pleasant Grove and Brandon Brown of Eau Gallie. It was reported on Monday that Brown could flip his pledge over to LSU, who is also chasing Williams.

It isn’t a shock to see the Tigers in the hunt for these prospects considering former Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis is now in Baton Rouge.

With Texas now in the SEC, expect plenty more of these types of recruiting battles on the trails with fellow conference members such as LSU and Texas A&M.

LSU football lands projection to flip 4-star Texas DL commit

LSU could be welcoming Texas into the conference by poaching a blue-chip recruiting prospect.

LSU may be poised to give the Texas Longhorns quite a “Welcome to the SEC” present.

On Monday, the Tigers received a projection from On3 recruiting analyst Billy Embody to flip Brandon Brown, a four-star defensive lineman from Eau Gallie (Melbourne, Fla.), on Monday.

Brown ranks as the No. 323 player nationally per the 247Sports composite and sits just a few spots lower at No. 326 in the On3 industry rankings. He has been committed to the Longhorns since December.

LSU currently has the momentum, however, after hosting him for an official visit this past weekend. Other contenders will have their chance to change that, however, as he has upcoming visits set with Tennessee, Texas and USC in the next three weeks.

LSU already has a strong 2025 class featuring two five-stars, including the No. 1 player in America. But a class that ranks as high as No. 2 nationally could get even better once the summer visit slate wraps up.

Texas Longhorns kicker Bert Auburn awarded with scholarship

Check out this video that was released on Sunday.

Texas Longhorns senior kicker Bert Auburn was rewarded by head coach Steve Sarkisian in a team meeting with a scholarship in a video posted to social media on Sunday.

As the team was discussing walk-ons during a team meeting, Sarkisian said, “They go through the same grind all scholarship guys go on all summer long. When we can reward those guys, man, there’s nothing better. Bert Auburn, you’re on scholarship.”

Auburn was greeting with cheers from his teammates and told his teammates, “I love all you guys. You guys are all like a family to me. Couldn’t be more excited to get to work this summer with you all. Hook ‘em.”

After making 3-of-3 extra points his freshman year, Auburn went 21-for-26 in 2022 before going 29-for-35 in 2023 as he earned All Big 12 First Team honors. He also set the Big 12 record for consecutive field goals made with 19 during the 2023 season. Auburn is a business major.

Auburn is tied for second in Texas history with 50 field goals made in his career, trailing only Cameron Dicker. He also ranks third in total points behind Dicker and Dusty Mangum.

Former Longhorns Samuel Cosmi, Roschon Johnson among most under-appreciated in NFL

These two were fan favorites in Austin.

Two former Texas Longhorns will be gearing up for training camp in July as they prepare for the 2024 NFL season. Both Samuel Cosmi and Roschon Johnson have tasted success and they have to be hungry for more.

Cosmi was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft and was expected to be a book end blocker for the Washington Commanders offensive line. Plans and injuries have changed that course for the better. Last season, Cosmi enjoyed the most success of his short NFL career in 2023. The team will look completely different with a new staff and a Heisman Trophy winner ready to take over at quarterback.

On the flip side we have Johnson, who is coming off his rookie season with the Chicago Bears. Most of his success came in the latter part of the season. Now with virtually a whole new offense, Johnson and company should be a whole lot more dynamic.

Both former Longhorns were named among the most under-appreciated in the NFL.

What Tom Blair Says…

In 2021, Washington chose Cosmi with a second-round draft pick. Since then, the team has changed names, owners, head coaches, front-office leadership and quarterbacks, while Cosmi missed parts of both of his first two seasons with injuries. In 2023, though, he moved from right tackle to right guard, and things seemed to really click. PFF credited him with just one sack allowed all season, awarding him the second-highest offensive grade of the entire team. With the Dan Quinn-Jayden Daniels era about to kick off, Washington must be glad to know Cosmi has developed into a pass-protecting, run-blocking rock up front.

Moving to guard was a blessing for both Washington and Cosmi, who has had issues staying on the field due to injury. Going into the 2024 NFL season, Cosmi will be tasked with keeping the reigning Heisman Trophy Winner upright and paving holes for Austin Ekeler and Brian Robinson Jr. The success in the upcoming season will likely revolve this offensive line, including the play of Samuel Cosmi.

Roschon Johnson, Chicago Bears

Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

What Blair Says…

Johnson was probably appreciated at an appropriate level in 2023, when he was a fourth-round pick showing flashes for a stuck-in-the-mud offense, topping 50 scrimmage yards in five games and breaking off the occasional monster gain. That was before GM Ryan Poles supercharged the depth chart with attention-grabbing names like Caleb Williams, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze and — most crucially for Johnson — D’Andre Swift. Don’t forget about Johnson, though. For the first time in his career last season, Swift served as a clear-cut lead back for the Eagles, and while he played well, his production also sputtered toward the end of the year. Giving Johnson a healthy share of the workload seems like a good way to bring the young back further along while perhaps keeping Swift fresher longer.

Johnson was a huge piece of the Texas backfield during his time in Austin and he is no stranger to sharing the load. He and Bijan Robinson were quite the tandem. With the talent coming in, Roschon looks to be a part of a loaded offense poised for big things once again. The Chicago running back should do a lot more than 352 yards and 2 TDs in 2024.

Texas target, 2025 four-star linebacker names Horns among top four

One of the top linebackers in the country has Horns among top four.

The Texas Longhorns find themselves in a good position to land one of the top linebackers in the country. McKinney, Texas, product Riley Pettijohn recently named his top four schools with the Horns being among them.

Pettijohn is ranked as the No. 4 linebacker of the 2025 recruiting cycle by 247Sports composite. Nationally he ranks at No. 31 overall and the No. 9 prospect in the Lone Star State.

The Texas target can be a punishing hitter that can play all three downs. He has some flexibility as a former safety for the McKinney defense. Texas will be joined by some familiar names in the chase for Pettijohn’s pledge.
