Texas Longhorns vs West Virginia: Game grades from the 17-13 win

Following the Texas Longhorns win over the West Virginia Mountaineers, we are handing out grades in the virtual report card.

It has been more than 48 hours since the Texas Longhorns defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers. So why are we still discussing this game? Frankly on a bye week you can let things marinate a little bit before pointing the game firmly behind you. With the Longhorns not set to play again until next Saturday in Lawrence, Kansas we take one final look back as we hand out game grades.

The Quarterback

Grade: C+

Sam Ehlinger didn’t look his best in this game against West Virginia. Let’s be fair he has looked inconsistent at best. Ever since the game against Texas Christian, it hasn’t looked like the first two games of the year. During that first stretch Ehlinger threw for 10 touchdowns while completing 71.2% of his passes. He was looking like a Heisman Trophy candidate. Since then, Ehlinger has completed less than 50% of his passes twice. Against TCU and then on Saturday against WVU.

He has throw for 12 touchdowns and four interceptions over those five games. His completion rate has dropped to 53.7% over that five game stretch with an average of 229.2 yards per game. Before this run, he averaged 344 yards and five touchdown passes per game. Sure UTEP and Texas Tech aren’t exactly doomsday defenses but the fact remains, Ehlinger is struggling.

Against WVU he did complete less than 50% but Ehlinger did have two touchdown passes. Plus he didn’t turn the ball over. The passing game struggled when they asked the senior to throw 20+ yards down the field. He threw incompletions on three consecutive attempts. The wide receivers didn’t exactly help him.

Studs and Duds from Texas’ victory over West Virginia

Despite the win, frustration and confusion were felt as Texas left the field. Here are three studs and three duds from the win over WVU.

Texas’ third consecutive win came against West Virginia on Saturday afternoon. Even with another victory, frustration and confusion were felt as the Longhorns left the field. Especially on the offensive side of the ball where only 17 points were scored.

Chris Ash’s squad looked better on the defensive side, especially in the run game. The Mountaineers only ran for 43 yards on 26 carries, tied for the lowest amount the Longhorns allowed all season (UTEP).

There were plenty of encouraging performances and there were plenty of discouraging performances. Despite sitting a 5-2 and in a great position to make the Big 12 championship. nobody is quite sure who this Texas team is.

Here are three studs and three duds from Texas’ 17-13 win over West Virginia.

USA TODAY Sports’ Week 10 Biggest Winners: Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma State

According to USA TODAY Sports Paul Myerberg, the Texas Longhorns were among the biggest winners of a wild week 10 in college football.

The Texas Longhorns remained right in the thick of the Big 12 Conference title chase after a 17-13 victory at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Once again with their backs against the wall, the Longhorns found a way to beat West Virginia in a game where Sam Ehlinger wasn’t at his best. West Virginia had the No. 1 overall defense in the Big 12 and they made life difficult on the offense. However, they couldn’t stop Bijan Robinson when Tom Herman actually put him on the field.

The defense stood tall on Saturday for the third week in a row. It didn’t look great in the early going but the defense is starting to play like the unit many people thought they would get under Chris Ash. Joseph Ossai wasn’t as dominate against the Mountaineers offensive line in terms of pass rush, but the job they did against the run won them the game. According to USA TODAY Sports, the Longhorns were big winners of week 10.

Texas will remain in the thick of the Big 12 chase after winning 17-13 against West Virginia. Unlike in last week’s shootout victory against Oklahoma State, the defense was the driving force behind the Longhorns’ third straight win: Texas gave up just 3.9 yards per play and made several key stops in the fourth quarter. Largely dismissed after losing to Oklahoma last month, the Longhorns are 4-2 in Big 12 play with games ahead against Kansas, Iowa State and Kansas State.

I don’t necessarily agree with Paul Myerberg’s summation about how the defense wasn’t the driving force for the win over Oklahoma State. The offense needed the defense to create turnovers and flip the field. Ehlinger and company couldn’t generate long sustaining drives to put themselves in position to win that game.

Defense may not have been able to stop the pass but the lack of a run game and four turnovers won it for them. They took potential points away from Oklahoma State and created opportunities for the offense. Plus Ossai played like an absolute mad man.

Myerberg also called Oklahoma State a winner after falling behind 13-0 at halftime to Kansas State.

Pushed around for the first two quarters and playing without star receiver Tylan Wallace, Oklahoma State outscored Kansas State 20-6 in the second half and won 20-18 to remain the only realistic playoff contender in the Big 12. The loss is a complete gut punch for the Wildcats, who had two chances in the fourth quarter to take the lead or force overtime. One drive, with the score 13-12, ended in a fumble the Cowboys returned for a touchdown. Kansas State scored on the ensuing possession but failed to convert the two-point attempt.

The Longhorns will now get to rest and recover from their latest three-game stretch. Following the bye week Texas heads to Lawrence to take on the winless Jayhawks. Last year Kansas pushed Texas to the brink before a Cameron Dicker field goal saved the day.

Against the Spread (ATS)

WEST VIRGINIA (-9, -110) opened as a double-digit favorite, but it has been bet down to single digits. Perhaps it is a little nervousness on the side of the public after the Mountaineers were just hammered by K-State. Still, they’re 5-1 ATS in the past six games overall and 4-0 ATS in the past four at home.

Texas (+9, -110) is a dismal 4-11 ATS in the past 15 games overall, and 1-5 ATS in the past six games against teams with a winning mark.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 127.5 (-106) is worth a small-unit play. The Under is 8-2 in West Virginia’s past 10 games overall, while going 4-1 in the past five for Texas.
