Texas Longhorns Football: Three things to know about Baylor

Texas is looking to get its season back on the right track on Saturday. Here are three things you need to know about its matchup vs Baylor:

Texas is looking to get its season back on the right track on Saturday, hosting first year head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears. It has been multiple weeks since either team has played, with the Longhorns have a bye week and the Bears dealing with coronavirus complications.

While this will be the first time Aranda faces Texas as a head coach, the former LSU defensive coordinator came to Austin last season and pulled out a 45-38 win. He will be no stranger to the challenges the Longhorns can present on the offensive side of the ball.

For Tom Herman, he has won two out of his three matchups against Baylor. His sole loss came last season in Waco, ending Texas’ Big 12 championship hopes in a 24-10 disappointment.

Both teams can still contend for a conference title and it will begin with a win on Saturday. Here are three things you need to know about Texas vs Baylor:

Texas Longhorns vs Baylor: Quarterback tale of the tape

As the kickoff for the Baylor Bears and Texas Longhorns, we examine the battle of the gunslingers as Charlie Brewer and Sam Ehlinger battle.

The bye week is now firmly in the rearview mirror. The Texas Longhorns look to get back on the field Saturday against the Baylor Bears at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. This game features two Austin native quarterbacks going head to head once again. For the Longhorns it puts Austin Westlake’s Sam Ehlinger against Lake Travis’ Charlie Brewer of Baylor. Can the Longhorns ruin Brewer’s final shot at a win in his hometown?

These two quarterbacks have won one game apiece when facing off. Ehlinger didn’t play against them in 2017 so which quarterback will get the edge on Saturday?

Ehlinger vs Brewer
6-3 Height 6-1
225 Weight 210
Senior Class Senior
40 Games 37
62.9 Career Comp % 64.0
10,081 Yards 8,113
7.7 YPA 7.9
84 TDs 55
26 INTs 22

Ehlinger is looking to best Brewer once again and get the Texas Longhorns back on track. When looking at the season numbers, there really isn’t a comparison. The Bears have managed to play just two games due to three separate COVID-19 outbreaks. They beat Kansas in their Big 12 Conference opener and fell to West Virginia in overtime.

Brewer ended up leaving the game but would return after having his shoulder examined. With the two weeks off since that game, he should be good to go against a Texas team that is desperate for a win after dropping two-straight games. Ehlinger wants to win to not only stop the snide but help eliminate the outside noise.

There seems to be a fair amount of negativity surrounding this program but winning cures all. For the Longhorns they have to believe they have the better quarterback and hopefully that gives them the edge on Saturday.

Moneyline (ML)

Baylor should win this game, especially with it being at home. The Bears are 11-1 SU in their last 12 games dating back to last season and are healthy entering this one against Texas.

Texas’ defense simply won’t be able to slow down the Bears offense enough in this one, allowing Baylor to come away with a win. Bet on BAYLOR (-223) to win straight up.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Texas is just 4-6 ATS this season, while Baylor is 5-2 ATS in its last seven games this season after starting 1-3. Baylor is 6-2 ATS against Big 12 teams, too.

The Bears are favored by 5.5 points,. It’s not a huge spread considering how poorly Texas has played lately. Take BAYLOR (-115) to cover the spread and win by at least six points.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 59.5 points, a fairly high number for this matchup. The combination of Texas’ struggling defense and Baylor’s consistent offense makes this seem like the Over is going to hit, but the total has gone Under in each of the last six meetings between these teams.

The total has gone Under in 11 of Texas’ last 15 road games, too. Take the UNDER (-110).
