Ranking the five most difficult games on Texas’ 2022 schedule

Texas faces a difficult schedule this upcoming season.

The upcoming season brings more reasons for optimism for Texas’ football program after a disappointing 5-7 season a year ago.

The Longhorns revamped the roster over the offseason with some major transfer portals and recruiting success. Most notably Texas brought in Ohio State quarterback transfer Quinn Ewers and the nation’s best offensive line recruiting class for the 2022 cycle.

Steve Sarkisian is aiming for a bounce-back campaign in the fall. Year No. 2 under Sark provides an opportunity to get Texas headed back in the right direction towards competing for championships at a consistent rate.

Texas faces a difficult schedule for the 2022 season. A home matchup against Nick Saban and his Alabama Crimson Tide along with a full Big 12 conference slate. This marks the last season on the 10-team Big 12 before expansion starts in 2023.

The Horns host the defending Big 12 champions but are faced will difficult road matchups in Stillwater and Manhattan.

Here are the top five most difficult games on Texas’ 2022 schedule.

The annual Orange-White Spring Game provides Texas fans their first look at the 2022 team ahead of the season opener against ULM on Sept. 3.

Texas Football Schedule Analysis: It’s not all that easy a non-conference schedule, but it Texas really is good enough to even think about being Big 12 Championship-good and possibly in the mix for the College Football Playoff, it has to take out a nasty Louisiana team, win at Arkansas, and complete the Southwest Conference two-step with Rice to follow.

Technically, with Texas Tech and TCU to open the Big 12 season, the Longhorns have a run of four straight games against old Southwest Conference teams. There’s run of four games in five away from Austin, but there’s a there’s a week off before dealing with a trip to Baylor.

Making matters worse, that means the dates with Texas, Oklahoma – as always – and Iowa State are away from home, and getting Kansas and Texas Tech in Austin isn’t that much of a help.

Texas Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: Steve Sarkisian’s team goes on a run over the first half of the season, and that includes a win at Arkansas and taking out TCU and Oklahoma before getting Oklahoma State at home.

Realistically there’s at least one gaffe along the way, but in a best case scenario, there’s just one loss on the way to a Big 12 Championship appearance.

Texas Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: The Longhorns are shocked by Arkansas on the road and lose the Big 12 opener at TCU to end any hopes of this being a big, splashy debut to the Sarkisian era.

A loss to Oklahoma makes it a total disaster of a campaign before mid-october, and dropping two more dates along the way – like at Iowa State and maybe to Oklahoma State or at West Virginia – to put the pressure on for 2022.

Austin health official thinks 25,000 fans at DKR is ‘too much’

According to a report from KXAN in Austin, Dr Mark Escott of the Travis County Health Authority believes it is too much.

The Texas Longhorns are preparing for the upcoming season and athletic director Chris Del Conte has stated there will be fans in attendance. In an email to season season ticket holders, Del Conte proclaimed they were ready to “rock n’ roll.” The plan around most major colleges participating in the fall season falls around 25 percent capacity. At Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium that means 25,000 screaming fanatics.

However, not everyone agrees with the sentiment of having that many fans in the stands. Recently KXAN, a NBC affiliate in Austin, had an interview with interim Austin-Travis County Health Dr. Mark Escott. Escott was not a fan of moving forward with 25 percent or 25,000 fans at DKR.

He spoke with local schools about their upcoming football season and even wants to start slow with them.

Let’s see if we can play, lets see if we can have two healthy teams play one another and then let’s talk about introducing parents of the athletes into the stands and again move gradually towards more people as we can prove success.”

When discussing fans at the stadium, Escott wants UT to limit the number even beyond the 25 percent being announced across the remaining FBS schools.

Packing 25,000 people in, even in a 100,000 seat stadium, introduces a lot of risk, not only to the people who are there but to the community as well,

While you can understand the sentiment behind the doctors thoughts, it really doesn’t hold much weight. The city of Austin holds zero authority over the University of Texas.
