Texas to settle depth chart, portal entries following spring game

We should know what team Texas is fielding by the end of spring football sessions.

The end of spring football approaches as we inch closer to the Orange and White Game on April 15. That should relatively coincide with the end of portal season barring a handful of disgruntled athletes who spontaneously opt to leave closer to the season.

Steve Sarkisian shared his process for solidifying the roster and allowing players who aren’t viewed as impact players to know where they stand.

I meet with every player at the end of spring and I like to tell them where they’re at. If we were playing next Saturday, this is where you would be on the depth chart. That doesn’t mean that’s the end all be all. Here’s what you need to do to work on to either keep that spot or what you need to do to earn that spot that’s in front of you.

Inevitably, players who don’t make the depth chart will likely be those who consider other schools. If and when that happens, we’ll have a fuller understanding of what team Texas fields for the 2023 season. From there we’ll be able to more accurately predict how the Longhorns match up with their opponents.

Texas HC Steve Sarkisian is raising the level of urgency this year

Pressure could bring the best out of Steve Sarkisian and Texas players this season.

Expectations are higher on the Forty Acres this year. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian can feel the heat.

On Friday, Sarkisian ramped up the passion on the practice field. It’s apparent the guru of offensive play design understands the importance of this season to the success of his tenure.

Simply looking at photos captured during practice, you can see Sarkisian looks exhausted. What he faces this season is the daunting task of navigating a season with far-and-away the most complete team in the conference. And while we expect Texas will win, the pressure is still felt by the team heading into 2023.

To be clear, the latest third-year bar set by Tom Herman is eclipsing 7-5 and not making immature gestures at the Longhorn Network camera. Sarkisian should be able to clear that marker. That said, Herman isn’t the bar and it’s imperative that this Texas team wins more consistently than it has in the past.

Sarkisian feels the pressure now, but he’s using it to push the team’s limits. For that reason, we should see a better team in his third season in Austin.

Roundtable: Which Texas player helped themselves most in the Orange-White game?

Which Texas player helped themselves most with their performance in the annual Orange-White game?

Texas held their annual Orange-White spring game on April 24.

While fans didn’t necessarily see one of the two quarterbacks separate from the other, there were several other players who stepped up and proved their case.

Longhorns Wire staff members chose three players who seemingly helped their case most throughout the Orange-White game.

Surprisingly, each selection was on the defensive side of the ball. Take a look at the choices on the next page.

Texas announces date, kickoff time for annual spring game

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte confirms the spring football game will be held on April 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Hosting a spring football game can be beneficial in many ways. For fans, they’re able to get a glimpse of young, talented freshman players for the first time. For the players, they have the opportunity to compete in position battles to help establish their position on the depth chart.

It’s the closest setting to a real game that both fans and players are able to experience. Which running back will win the starting job? How will highly-rated backup quarterback Hudson Card do? Who will seemingly become Texas’ new primary slot receiver?

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte recently confirmed the date and time for the 2020 spring football game, which will again be held under the lights at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

Although construction will be active throughout the south end zone, the fan experience is expected to be eventful. Last year, several autograph opportunities were held for children while Ludacris was the headliner for the Longhorn City Limits postgame concert.
