PHOTOS: Highlights from Florida baseball’s win over TCU in College World Series

The Gators fended off the TCU Horned Frogs in the semifinal round thanks to some late-inning heroics.

Florida baseball earned a trip to the 2023 College World Series Finals on Wednesday with yet another nail-biting win to stay perfect at Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. This time, the Gators fended off the Texas Christian Horned Frogs in the semifinal round, 3-2, thanks to some late-inning heroics.

All three of Florida’s wins this past week have come by a single-run margin, with Kevin O’Sullivan out-foxing the opposition to seize victory from the jaws of defeat. This time, he helped navigate a rough start by Jac Caglianone that resulted in an early run — but could have been much worse.

The championship-winning manager also played chess with his bullpen, making solid decisions that helped keep TCU from crossing home plate until the eighth inning. Despite going into the ninth tied at 2-2, the Gators used a leadoff double by Tyler Shelnut to ultimately score the winning run. SEC saves leader Brandon Neely closed the door in the ninth, securing the trip to the next round.

How to Watch: Florida vs TCU Horned Frogs in College World Series Wednesday

Here’s what you need to know to follow this afternoon’s College World Series action.

Florida baseball takes on the Texas Christian Horned Frogs in its third game of the 2023 College World Series on Wednesday, June 21, and if you are looking to follow this evening’s action on the clay diamond, you have come to the right place.

The Orange and Blue earned a share of the Southeastern Conference’s regular-season title but were unable to earn the tournament crown, getting upended by the Vanderbilt Commodores in the semifinals — Vandy’s first win in five tries during the 2023 campaign. Nonetheless, Kevin O’Sullivan’s squad finished the season ranked second in the nation according to most major polls.

The Gators then went on to win the Gainesville Regionals, taking two out of three from the Texas Tech Red Raiders to advance to the next round while also dispensing of the FAMU Rattlers and UConn Huskies along the way. Finally, Florida defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks in two straight games to reach the College World Series.

Florida defeated the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday with a late rally to earn the CWS-opening win before defeating the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles by a hair on Sunday. Take a look below at everything you need to know to follow Wednesday afternoon’s matchup between Florida and TCU at Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.

Game Preview: TCU stands in the way of College World Series Finals for Florida

Florida is one win away from the College World Series Finals. All the Gators have to do is beat TCU on Wednesday to advance.

The Florida Gators are one win away from returning to the College World Series Finals, but the Texas Christian Horned Frogs are looking to spoiler as they hope to avoid elimination for a third-straight game.

Florida is the favorite coming into Wednesday’s contest having played just 14 innings at the CWS and on rest since Sunday night’s win over Oral Roberts. TCU will have true freshman, Kole Klecker, go on short rest after going five innings on Friday against ORU.

The Gators are expected to turn to Jac Caglianone, the team’s typical No. 3 starting pitcher, on Wednesday. Brandon Sproat and Hurston Waldrep each delivered quality starts for UF, but Caglianone is the most volatile of the trio.

Although he’s struggled with fastball location in the past, Caglianone has steadily lowered his ERA from 4.91 to 3.78 since May. The bullpen should be well-rested if anything goes wrong, though.

Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan apologized for losing track of how many mound visits the team had spent on Sunday. The blunder forced Brandon Neely out of the game and true freshman Cade Fisher onto the mound after just four warm-up throws in the bullpen.

Sully should have everything under control against TCU, especially after an incident like that, but it’s worth noting that veteran coaches who have been to Omaha can crack under the pressure in Omaha. It’s not easy to win there, yet Florida has a chance to sweep its pool and advance to the Finals.

Florida is the away team today. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT.

Here’s everything you need to know about Florida-TCU in the College World Series Semifinals on Wednesday.

Big 12 Power Rankings after Week 12: Iowa State, Oklahoma rising

After a limited week of Big 12 action with just four teams, the Iowa State Cyclones and Oklahoma Sooners are separating themselves.

The Big 12 Conference had three of the top five teams in action. The early game being Kansas State visiting Iowa State. The nightcap featured Oklahoma State against Oklahoma in the Bedlam game. The Cyclones took care of the Kansas State Wildcats relatively easily. That game was over by halftime with a 35-0 lead. They scored just 10 in the second half to win 45-0.

The Cowboys found themselves down early on in this game against the Oklahoma Sooners. OU was up 21-0 in the first quarter before the Cowboys could find a way back into the game. Spencer Sanders would be knocked out of the game early with a possible concussion. The team went with freshman passer Shane Illingworth. The score at the half was 27-13. Heading into the fourth quarter, Spencer Rattler and Oklahoma extended the lead to 34-13.

Spencer Sanders would come back into the game into the fourth quarter but it was more of the same. The Cowboys offense just couldn’t put together any sustained drives to challenge the Sooners.

A look at the Big 12 Conference power rankings heading into the final three weeks.

Big 12 Roundup: Iowa State and Kansas State stay perfect

The Iowa State Cyclones and Kansas State Wildcats have been two of the surprised in conference play after losing their opener.

The Texas Longhorns needed a win on Saturday as they were chasing two other teams in action. Iowa State and Kansas State looked to remain perfect and stay atop the Big 12 Conference standings. The Cyclones were hosting the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Wildcats took their show on the road as they traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to play the Horned Frogs.

Texas Tech at Iowa State

Following their huge win over the Oklahoma Sooners, the Cyclones could have fallen into the trap game. Often when a team gets a huge win, they are prone to the letdown game. However, it didn’t happen in Ames, Iowa. The Red Raiders struck first on a blocked field goal where Zach McPherson ran it back 90 yards. The Iowa State defense however didn’t give up a single offensive point until the final five minutes of the game.

Breece Hall once again ran like a man possessed. He rushed for over 100 yards for a fourth straight game to open the season. The Tech defense had no answer as Iowa State averaged five yards per carry in this game. They had 227 yards on the ground, and Brock Purdy added 302 yards in the air. The offense held a 31-7 lead before Henry Colombi found Erik Ezukanma for the touchdown. The Cyclones won 31-15 and improved to 3-1.

They remained perfect in conference play. Next week, Iowa State will be on a bye week before heading to Stillwater to take on the undefeated Oklahoma State Cowboys. Texas Tech will host West Virginia after its bye week. Saturday’s game was a tough one for the Red Raiders, who might have a quarterback controversy on their hands.

Kansas State vs Texas Christian

It was an old school defensive slugfest between Kansas State and TCU. The Wildcats were without quarterback Skylar Thompson. Will Howard took all the snaps under center. Howard ran for 86 yards and touchdown. He added another 117 yards on the ground for KSU. The defense was able to harass the Horned Frogs quarterback.

A week after Max Duggan torched the Longhorns defense, he wasn’t able get it going against the Wildcats. Kansas State was able to get to Duggan for three sacks, ultimately ending with him being benched. Matthew Downing didn’t do any better for TCU. Duggan rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown but his passing wasn’t there for him.

The Wildcats defense held strong in this game. Despite the offense not putting up many points, the defense decided to take matters into their own hands. A.J. Parker picked off Downing to put the Wildcats up 21-7 in the third. Duggan did rush for a score with 3:39 left in the game but Kansas State joined Iowa State in staying perfect.

Next up for Kansas State is its yearly fight for state bragging rights. It will play Kansas. The Horned Frogs will look to get back on the winning side when they host the Oklahoma Sooners.

Big 12 Roundup: trOUble in Norman, Sooners shocked at home

With all ten teams in play, we look around the league in the Big 12 roundup on a wild Saturday across the landscape.

Before the Texas Longhorns put their No. 8 ranking on the line in a thriller, the No. 3 ranked Oklahoma Sooners hosted the Kansas State Wildcats. In their openers, the Wildcast fell at home to Arkansas State while the Sooners rolled Missouri State. However, on Saturday’s early kickoff the fortunes turned.

Kansas State 38, Oklahoma 35

It was the conference opener at home for the Oklahoma Sooners. They came in as heavy favorites and many expected them to run over a depleted Kansas State team that was missing eight players. Early on it looked like Spencer Rattler would pick right up where he left off against Missouri State. After an early interception from Rattler, the Sooners scored touchdowns on back to back drives. It wasn’t until a second pick that the Wildcats would score their lone touchdown of the first half.

With 2:46 left in the third quarter, the Sooners found themselves up 35-14 and looking to wrap up another Big 12 Conference win. Then the floodgates opened for Kansas State. The Wildcats defense would allow another score, they forced two turnovers and three punts on the final five drives of the game. Meanwhile Kansas State would score on their next four drives to take the lead after 24 unanswered points to win the game. Rattler threw his third pick of the game as he tried to rally his team.

The talented redshirt freshman looked just like that, a freshman. He will get a lot better and this was a coachable moment for Lincoln Riley. The Wildcats upset the Sooners for the second-straight season.

Iowa State 37, Texas Christian 34

The next game to kick off before Texas took the field were the Iowa State Cyclones and Texas Christian Horned Frogs. This was the first time TCU has played this season after postponing their opening game. Iowa State was looking to avenge a dreadful loss to the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns in Ames.

In this game Brock Purdy looked better than he did in the opener. He only had five incompletions and threw for one touchdown. It was more about the running game for the Cyclones with Bryce Hall. It just took a quarter to get everything rolling. Despite the two teams combined for 71 points in this game, neither team could get the upper hand early with a scoreless first quarter.

On first and 15 from their own 25-yard line, Hall broke off a 75-yard run to get the scoring started in this game. Hall finished with 153 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Newly named starter Matthew Downing responded with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Johnson. Downing just wouldn’t finish this game as the quarterback. After a sack-fumble, the Cyclones would build a 16-7 lead going into the break.

Max Duggan would take over in the second half and led the team to 27 second half points. The offense finally got rolling to close in on the Cyclones. Down two late in the fourth, Duggan had a pass go right off his receivers hands and it was intercepted. Hall would take care of the rest and give Iowa State a 37-28 lead. They would hold on to win the game.

Oklahoma State 27, West Virginia 13

Much like the Cyclones and Horned Frogs, this game started out with a scoreless first quarter. The Oklahoma State Cowboys would be without starting quarterback Spencer Sanders in this one as freshman Shane Illingsworth would get the nod. He threw for just 139 yards and one interception in this one. It was all about the running backs for OSU.

The standout receiver Tylan Wallace would catch six passes for 78 yards but was held out of the endzone in this one. The second quarter lead would be enough for Oklahoma State as West Virginia and Jarret Doege just couldn’t build any steam.

As the second quarter opened, the Cowboys found the endzone on a LD Brown 66-yard scamper to the endzone. He has become a homerun threat for the offense. The following drive, Oklahoma State built a 14-point lead with a scoop and score on a fumble.

After finding themselves down 17-0, Doege found Winston Wright Jr for a 70-yard touchdown. They would go into the half down 20-7. The Mountaineers could only must six second half points on two field goals as they fell to OSU. Chuba Hubbard got the ball rolling late as the cracked the 100-yard mark on 22 carries and a touchdown.

Baylor 47, Kansas 14

The Baylor Bears finally got onto the field for their first game of the 2020 campaign against the Kansas Jayhawks. On the first drive of the game, Kansas would take a 7-0 lead on a 21-yard run from Pooka Williams. After a Bears punt and a failed fourth and one run by Kansas, Baylor would get going on offense. A Travis Ebner run would tie the game up. He wouldn’t be done with his showcase on this day.

Baylor would end up taking a 17-7 lead into the break after Charlie Brewer found Ebner on an 18-yard pass. Ebner would score again on the opening kickoff of the second half to extend their lead to 17 points. He would run it 100 yards as the special teams got their first score on the board. Ebner would add an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after a safety. Baylor would be up 40-7 at that point.

All in all Travis Ebner had quite the day with four total touchdowns and 272 all-purpose yards in the game. Both touchdowns for Kansas came on runs from Pooka Williams, who finished with 76 yards rushing.
