Bears players react to Teven Jenkins’ neck injury

The Bears’ biggest loss on Sunday was Teven Jenkins suffering a scary neck injury on the first series against the Eagles.

The Chicago Bears were defeated, 25-20, by the Philadelphia Eagles, dropping them to 3-11 on the season. But that wasn’t the biggest loss on Sunday.

Right guard Teven Jenkins suffered a scary neck injury during the first drive of the game. Jenkins, surrounded by his entire team, was loaded onto a stretcher and carted off the field. He was later taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Bears coach Matt Eberflus provided an “encouraging” update after the game, saying that “he was responsive” and was “moving his hands.” That was the only update Eberflus was provided at that time, but he’s sure to have further updates in the coming days.

Center Sam Mustipher explained his vantage point of the play.

“It looked like his neck got stretched out a little bit on the pull,” Mustipher said, via the Chicago Tribune. “From everything I’ve heard from everybody around the locker room, he’s doing well. He was moving his hands and talking on the field. In a situation like that, when somebody gets pulled off on a stretcher, that’s what you want to see.”

It was a scary situation that happened on the field. And considering everything Jenkins has been through since the offseason, you have to feel for the former second-round pick.

“All my prayers and wishes are out to him doing well,” left tackle Braxton Jones said.

Jenkins has been the Bears’ best offensive lineman this season, so his loss severely impacted the offensive line in this game. Chicago allowed six sacks on quarterback Justin Fields, including five in the first half.

“That’s tough,” Mustipher said. “And then especially when it happened early on, your juices are flowing, your adrenaline is flowing, getting out there to play a physical game against a very good opponent. And then to see something happen like that, it’s kind of deflating.

“But you’ve got to regroup, refocus and then get back into it. But, yeah, it’s definitely tough to see.”

Bears HC Matt Eberflus provides injury updates on Teven Jenkins, Jaylon Johnson

Following Sunday’s loss to the Eagles, Bears HC Matt Eberflus provided some quick updates on Teven Jenkins, Jaylon Johnson and more.

The Chicago Bears have been ravaged by injuries in the back half of this 2022 season, and it was more of the same fresh off a bye week in Sunday’s 25-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Bears lost several key starters to injury, including cornerback Jaylon Johnson, linebacker Jack Sanborn and, most serious, right guard Teven Jenkins, who was carted off on a stretcher.

Bears coach Matt Eberflus provided some quick updates about injured players following the game, and there’s sure to be more detailed updates in the coming days.

The Chicago Bears were already battling injuries heading into Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. But they lost two starters within the first four plays.

That included right guard Teven Jenkins, who suffered a neck injury on that first offensive series. A cart was brought out for Jenkins, and he was placed on a stretcher with his neck in a brace. The team announced he’s been ruled out for the game.

According to Mark Grote, Jenkins was “laying flat on his back as they carted him off of the field” and “was speaking to and responding to the medical experts.”

Jenkins, who moved from tackle to right guard, has been Chicago’s best offensive lineman this season. Jenkins was replaced by backup Michael Schofield at right guard.

Receiver Equanimeous St. Brown also exited in the first series, and he’s being evaluated for a concussion. He’s questionable to return.

Bears OC Luke Getsy not interested in moving Teven Jenkins back to tackle

Teven Jenkins has found a home at right guard on the Bears offensive line and Luke Getsy wants to keep him there.

Chicago Bears offensive lineman Teven Jenkins had an eventful training camp over the summer that resulted in him moving from tackle to guard due to injuries and ineffectiveness at the position. The result has been Jenkins excelling at his new spot and he seems to have found a home on the interior of the offensive line. But could he make a return to tackle at some point given the uncertainty at the position? Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy doesn’t seem inclined to make such a move.

Getsy, speaking with reporters on Thursday, addressed a question posed regarding Jenkins’ future on the offensive line and if there’s any interest in seeing what he can do back at the tackle position. “I think he’s a guy who could do it but I think what is most important is that he continues to grow at what he’s at,” said Getsy. “I think moving inside this year gave him an opportunity to find himself and I think he has. He’s done a really nice job of owning that role and has an opportunity to be a really good guy on the inside. So I don’t think there’s any interest to try and move him somewhere else, but I think he’s capable of doing that.”

Jenkins was drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State as the team’s future left tackle. He was injured for most of his rookie season, however, and only saw a limited amount of playing time near the end of the year.

This offseason, he seemed to fall out of favor early with the new regime as trade rumors surrounded him early in training camp. But he embraced a position change following the team’s first preseason game, replacing veteran Michael Schofield, and hasn’t looked back.

Jenkins has played 11 games at right guard in 2022, allowing just two sacks on the season and is the highest-graded player on the Bears offensive line, according to Pro Football Focus. He is a menacing run blocker and improved in pass protection as the season has progressed.

Jenkins may have come into the league as a tackle, but he’s clearly found a home at guard and it sounds like the Bears are happy keeping him there. Now they will need to see if someone like Alex Leatherwood, another high pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, can be a solution next to Jenkins at right tackle over these final four games.

8 takeaways from the Bears’ first 13 games of the season

From Justin Fields’ ascent to Ryan Poles’ disastrous free agent class, here are our Bears takeaways at the bye week.

It’s taken 14 weeks, but the Chicago Bears finally arrived at their bye week. The good news is that it’s a chance for the team to regroup before the final stretch of games. The bad news is they’ve already been eliminated from playoff contention and will play for pride and draft position.

The Bears (3-10) are riding a six-game losing streak in head coach Matt Eberflus’ first season and are in line for the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The good news, however, is quarterback Justin Fields looks like the real deal.

Fields and the offense have looked unstoppable at times while the defense has struggled to keep opposing offenses at bay. The result more often than not has been competitive games where the Bears fall just short of victory.

The Bears were never supposed to be a contender, but has that changed our outlook on the season? Now that there’s a break in the action, here are our takeaways following the first 13 games of the season.

Matt Eberflus explains why Bears RG Teven Jenkins didn’t play vs. Falcons

Bears RG Teven Jenkins was active for Sunday’s game to the Falcons. So why wasn’t he on the field? Matt Eberflus explained.

The Bears offensive line turned in another brutal showing against the Falcons, where they allowed four sacks on quarterback Justin Fields.

But one of the biggest questions throughout the game was why Teven Jenkins wasn’t playing at right guard.

Jenkins missed last week’s game against the Lions with a hip injury, but he appeared on track to return against Atlanta. Heck, the fact that he was active seemed to indicate he’d be good to go.

But it was backup Michael Schofield lined up at right guard, and it certainly wasn’t his finest hour. Schofield allowed two sacks and committed two penalties, standing out in the worst way.

Jenkins has been the Bears’ best offensive lineman this season, and they’ve missed him immensely in the last two games. So, if Jenkins was active and in uniform, why wasn’t he on the field?

“Teven, before the game, said, ‘Hey, I’m able. I’m still a little bit hurt, but I’m able to be there as a backup, if needed, in an emergency,’” coach Matt Eberflus said after the game, via NBC Sports Chicago. “So that’s where he was today.”

Assuming Fields is healthy and ready to go (he suffered a left shoulder injury in the loss), it’s clear Chicago needs Jenkins back on the field. He can’t do it all, but he certainly helps shore up the right side of that line.

Matching Chicago Bears with Taylor Swift songs from Midnights

That’s right, we took each song from Taylor Swift’s new album, Midnights, and matched it with a member of the Bears.

We’re about at the halfway point of the 2022 NFL season and it’s been a long couple months for the Chicago Bears.

There have been the highs like the Week 1 shocking victory over the San Francisco 49ers, the dominating win against the New England Patriots, as well as Justin Fields’ emergence and the elite rushing attack.

There have also been low moments, such as the blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys, offensive line issues, defensive breakdowns, and even heartbreaking trades. It’s been so dramatic, Taylor Swift might as well write an album about it.

The superstar singer obviously isn’t going to do that, but she did recently release her latest album Midnights that has millions of people still obsessed with the music, storylines, and meaning of the songs. So why not put our own twist on it and see if we can match them up with the Bears?

That’s right, we took each song from Swift’s latest album and matched it up with a player or front office member based on the title and lyrics because actual football analysis can wait a day.

Just make sure you suspend your disbelief. After all, Swift’s songs are all basically focused on her dating life and don’t really delve into football. But let’s begin in chronological order.

Report: Bears are benching Sam Mustipher vs. New England

The Bears are reportedly shuffling their offensive line ahead of this week’s matchup against the Patriots.

It appears change is finally coming to the Chicago Bears offensive line. According to ESPN 1000 and NBC Sports Chicago’s David Kaplan, the Bears are shuffling their offensive line for this week’s matchup against the New England Patriots, most notably benching center Sam Mustipher in favor of Lucas Patrick.

Kaplan reports Patrick will slide over from left guard to replace Mustipher and veteran Michael Schofield will enter the starting lineup in place of Patrick. The rest of the offensive line will remain the same, with Braxton Jones, Larry Borom, and Teven Jenkins continuing to play left tackle, right tackle, and right guard, respectively.

The change has been a long time coming for the interior of the offensive line. Mustipher took over the starting center position in training camp when Patrick was lost for an extended period of time after suffering a thumb injury. But even when Patrick returned and was deemed healthy enough to play, the Bears stuck with Mustipher, who has surrendered numerous pressures and has struggled at times with penalties and snapping the ball.

Patrick, who had been rotating at right guard with Jenkins, moved to the left side following an injury to Cody Whitehair. But given the struggles that Mustipher and the entire offensive line have had as a whole, a change needed to be made. The Bears are tied with the Washington Commanders for the league lead in sacks allowed with 23.

No official announcement has come from the team and we will likely have to wait until Monday night to get confirmation, but this change at the very least shows the Bears are doing something different that will hopefully result in cleaner pockets for Justin Fields going forward.

The Bears’ last gasp 30-second lateral bonanza vs. the Giants was a perfect summary of their bleak afternoon

Yakety Sax was recorded specifically for moments like this.

If you look at the final 20-12 score of the Bears’ game with the Giants (+3), you’d think it was a closely-contested and heated affair between two surprising NFC teams. Look through their general offensive box score — 155 yards passing, six sacks, zero touchdowns on three red zone trips, three fumbles lost — and you see that Justin Fields and Co. actually “enjoyed” a bleak afternoon on the road.

That’s what made the Bears’ final desperate schoolyard toss around the field to try and win the game all too fitting. Like their overall effort on the day, the hook-and-ladder attempt showed hints of promise when it shuffled through the hands of Fields and offensive linemen like Teven Jenkins.

And by the end of all the flailing and lateral movement (over roughly 30 strange seconds), they ultimately moved the ball up the field very little:

Incredible! Look at the dots of this wild one, too:

Truly, what art.

Only the Bears could turn a 30-second play that seemingly touched the hands of every player on offense into absolutely nothing up field. At least it’s nothing out of character for a team that struggles to score 20 points and eclipse 300 yards of offense every Sunday.

Bears LG Cody Whitehair ruled out with knee injury

The Bears suffered a brutal blow with the loss of LG Cody Whitehair in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Giants.

The Chicago Bears suffered a brutal blow to the offensive line with the loss of left guard Cody Whitehair in the first half of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Whitehair suffered a knee injury in the second quarter, and he has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the game. It’s a blow for a young offensive line that has struggled in the first half against the Giants.

Lucas Patrick has replaced Whitehiar at left guard. Patrick started the game at right guard, where he was rotating with Teven Jenkins. Jenkins is in at right guard with Patrick at left guard.
