Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals crucial injury update for Patrick Mahomes ahead of Week 10

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reveals crucial injury update for Patrick Mahomes ahead of Week 10 | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the media on Friday, days before their AFC West matchup with the Denver Broncos. He revealed injury statuses for several players, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“Alright, as far as the injuries go, JuJu(Smith-Schuster) will be the only one that’s out, everybody else practiced,” said Reid. “Turk (Tershawn Wharton) practiced today, so good thing he’s out there.”

Smith-Schuster continues battling a lingering hamstring issue that has kept him out of the past few games. Aside from the veteran receiver, Reid believes everyone else should be good to go on Sunday.

“Yeah, I think so,” said Reid. “Yeah, I mean right now – we’ll see how it plays out.”

Reid also expects Mahomes to be okay after aggravating his ankle injury last Monday, as the star quarterback was a full participant in practice this week.

“He’s (Patrick Mahomes) done a good job,” said Reid. “He didn’t miss anything, so he’s done a good job.”

The Chiefs had Justyn Ross active in place of Smith-Schuster last week, and he will likely remain on the active roster this week.

Two Chiefs veterans missed practice on Thursday

#Chiefs veterans JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tershawn Wharton did not participate in Kansas City’s practice session on Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for a Week 10 matchup against the Denver Broncos, and as injuries pile up for the defending Super Bowl champions, it will take a herculean effort to keep their perfect season alive.

Veteran contributors JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tershawn Wharton both missed Kansas City’s practice session on Thursday and while their status for the Chiefs’ AFC West showdown with the Broncos hasn’t been announced, it seems unlikely that either will be available on Sunday.

Smith-Schuster has been dealing with a hamstring injury, while Wharton was listed with a knee injury.

Take a look at Kansas City’s full injury report here:

Among the other players listed were running back Kareem Hunt, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and defensive end George Karlaftis, who were listed with quad, ankle, and abdomen injuries respectively.

All were full participants in the Chiefs’ practice on Thursday.

Stay tuned to see how Kansas City’s injuries affect the Chiefs’ matchup against Denver on November 10.

Veteran Chiefs defensive lineman fined for unnecessary roughness penalty

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton fined for unnecessary roughness penalty | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive line has been successful throughout the team’s undefeated start to the season. Their aggressive play in the trenches has made them a quarterback’s nightmare and, in some cases, led to disciplinary actions from the NFL.

Chiefs starting defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton was fined $11,817 for an unnecessary roughness penalty during last Monday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints. The penalty was called by officials in the 4th quarter when Wharton slapped the facemask of New Orleans offensive lineman Lucas Patrick.

During the second half of the Week 5 game, Wharton also tallied a sack on Saints quarterback Derek Carr. The 26-year-old is a two-time Super Bowl champion after going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Missouri S&T.

Wharton is off to an excellent start to the season and is second on the Chiefs in sacks with 1.5. The fifth-year defensive lineman chose to stay in Kansas City in the offseason, signing a one-year deal. He, alongside All-Pro Chris Jones, is a dominant duo in the middle of the line at defensive tackle.

PFF: Tershawn Wharton was Chiefs’ highest-graded player in loss to Jaguars

Veteran DT Tershawn Wharton was the #Chiefs’ highest-graded player in Kansas City’s loss to the #Jaguars on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs played their first game of the 2024 preseason on Saturday, struggling to compete with the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 26-13 loss.

The Chiefs’ starters played less than a full quarter, giving second and third-string players a chance to earn their spot on the team’s 53-man roster before the regular season begins. With two more preseason games left, players must continue performing at their best to earn a place on Andy Reid’s roster.

On Monday, PFF listed their five highest-graded Chiefs from Saturday’s loss, with fourth-year defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton posting a career-high 88.7 grade.

Though good performances in preseason don’t always translate to the regular season, fans should watch for Wharton and rising wide receiver Justyn Ross, who posted the second-highest grade among Chiefs on Saturday, as they fight for a spot on the roster.

The team heads back to Kansas City this week to play the Detroit Lions in Week 2 of the preseason. Expect to see more breakout performances from the team’s second and third-string players.

2024 NFL Draft: Legendary kicker Robbie Gould on his experience as an undrafted player

Legendary kicker Robbie Gould told #Chiefs Wire’s @EdEastonJr about his experience as an undrafted player during a recent interview

The NFL Draft has been essential for the Kansas City Chiefs during their run of success. Over the years, many of the Chiefs’ draft picks have contributed to their Super Bowl titles, but the franchise also has multiple undrafted free agents.

The Chiefs have struck gold with undrafted free agents, like former players Tommy Townsend, Shane Buechele, and Jody Fortson. Tershawn Wharton is still a significant contributor to the defensive line.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. sat down recently with Chicago Bears great and former 18-year kicker Robbie Gould to discuss his thoughts on going undrafted, which motivated him to a successful career.

“It doesn’t matter when your name gets called or if it doesn’t get called at all,” Gould explained. “It’s all about just getting an opportunity. So some of these guys, sometimes if you go on the later rounds, it’s not even a great spot for you because it might not be a perfect fit for that kid. So to me, it’s if you get an opportunity, whether it be by draft or whether it be a free agent tryout or whether it’s a free agency period for the offseason.”

Former Kansas State defensive back Ekow Boye-Doe was a recent example of overcoming the odds and making the Chiefs’ active roster midway through the 2023 season. As an undrafted free agent, Boye-Doe was cut after training camp but retained on the practice squad and eventually earned playing time due to injuries in Kansas City’s secondary.

“It’s just taking advantage of [the opportunity] and showcasing what you can do and that even though you miss, you can bounce back, and the reality is to compete,” Gould continued. “That’s what you’re [going to] do. If you’re getting drafted, you’re going to compete with somebody, whether it’s yourself or somebody on the roster. You’re competing for that job.

“I was an undrafted guy, so I was just hungrier to make the roster cut a few times. It made me work harder. Sometimes, it’s all about everyone having their own journey, and [enjoying] it. Know that there [are] ups and downs, and hopefully, what you put into it is what you get out of it.”

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach constantly monitors the free agent market in the days after the draft, proving it doesn’t always matter if your name is called.

At the end of the day, players only need to contribute to their team to carve out a role for themselves in the NFL.

WATCH: Travis Kelce throws Justin Tucker’s helmet so Patrick Mahomes can warm up

Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce tried to chump Ravens kicker Justin Tucker and make him move so Patrick Mahomes can warm up

We’re a little over an hour away from the Ravens and Chiefs kicking off the AFC title game, and star tight end Travis Kelce just added some drama to the contest.

Baltimore’s All-Pro kicker, Justin Tucker was down in the Chiefs end of the field warming up with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Kelce and the Kansas City offense took the field for some early pregame warmups of their own.

After watching Mahomes take a couple of dropbacks with Tucker still stretching, and his helmet in the Chiefs way, Kelce took upon himself to tell the kicker to move, while tossing his helmet.
