OKC Thunder player grades: Thunder blow 18-point lead, SGA & Bazley combine for 57 points in 134-116 loss to Hornets

SGA continues to play like arguably the best scorer in the league since the ASB in a blowout loss to the Hornets.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will continue to search for its first win in nearly two weeks as the team falls to the Charlotte Hornets, 134-116.

After a hot start in the first quarter where the team scored 41 points and led by as much as 18 points, the Hornets were able to take control for the rest of the game and outscore the Thunder 105-75 in the remaining three quarters. This game continues the trend of the Thunder’s once top defense regressing to one of the worst in the league due to injuries.

Entering this game, since the All-Star break, the Thunder have the 29th ranked defensive rating at 121.3. Just for comparison reasons, the Thunder had the eighth-best defensive rating at 108.6 before the All-Star break.

The Hornets were able to swing this game their way with its outside shooting, as they shot 20-of-35 (57.1 percent) from beyond the arc. The Hornets entered the game as a top-five team in the league in terms of three-pointers made per game.

For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to play like one of the best players in the league recently as he collected his eighth game of at least 30 points in his last 10 contests. Darius Bazley also followed up a career night with another 20-point performance.

For the Hornets, Terry Rozier led the team in scoring with 30 points. Miles Bridges also finished with 27 points and LaMelo Ball had an 21 point and seven assists performance.

Overall, the defensive slippage in recent weeks was not more evident than it was in this game as the Hornets were able to score 102 points in three quarters with ease. The Thunder simply do not have the offensive firepower to keep up with that type of scoring currently — even with Gilgeous-Alexander being a nuclear scorer in recent weeks. Let’ take a look at player grades.

Trevelin Queen, Daishen Nix have career nights as short-handed Rockets lose in Charlotte

The short-handed Rockets were missing six rotation players on Monday in Charlotte, but young prospects Trevelin Queen and Daishen Nix were bright spots in a loss to Terry Rozier and the Hornets.

The Houston Rockets were missing six expected rotation players on Monday night in Charlotte, with four out due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols and the starting backcourt of Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. resting for back-to-back maintenance after recent injuries.

Given those absences, the result against the Hornets and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball largely went as expected. Charlotte won a second consecutive game as the Hornets (18-17) battle for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, while the Rockets (10-24) lost a fourth straight game while maintaining their spot in the West’s cellar.

In Monday’s 123-99 blowout (box score), Terry Rozier led the way for the home team with a game-high 27 points on 7-of-12 shooting from 3-point range (58.3%). Meanwhile, Ball scored 16 points, made 4-of-7 on 3-pointers (57.1%), and dished out a game-high 7 assists.

The Rockets were led by recent signing Trevelin Queen, who had an NBA career-high 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals in 29 minutes off the bench. The 6-foot-6 guard, who turns 25 years old in February, hit 4-of-10 shots from 3-point range (40.0%). Queen’s promising performance is welcome news, since he’s likely to receive more playing time in the days ahead due to the growing health and safety protocols list.

Besides Queen, other players scoring in double-figures were:

  • Eric Gordon: 16 points, 3-of-6 on 3-pointers (50.0%), 3 assists in 24 minutes
  • Christian Wood: 16 points, 5-of-9 shooting (55.6%), 2-of-4 on 3-pointers (50.0%), 9 rebounds, 3 assists in 26 minutes
  • Daishen Nix: 11 points, 5-of-8 shooting (62.5%), 1-of-3 on 3-pointers (33.3%), 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals in 26 minutes
  • Armoni Brooks: 11 points, 3-of-14 on 3-pointers (21.4%), 4 assists, 3 rebounds in 35 minutes

The good news for the Rockets is that assuming they don’t test positive for COVID-19, Green and Porter should be back in the lineup on Tuesday when Houston hosts the Los Angeles Lakers at Toyota Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Central. Until then, scroll on for highlights and postgame reaction following Monday’s short-handed loss.

The Hornets lose 4 players to COVID-19 protocols amidst a wild NBA week

Explaining the latest COVID-19 news as it pertains to the NBA.

Capping off a busy week in the NBA that was filled with injury-related news, four Charlotte Hornets players have entered the health and safety protocols this Saturday.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania broke the news via Twitter that both Terry Rozier and LaMelo Ball had entered the protocols before a follow-up tweet shortly after named Jalen McDaniels and Mason Plumlee as the next two Hornets to join.

Ball, the most recent Rookie of the Year, is having a strong sophomore season. He’s leading the Hornets in points (20.0), rebounds (7.7), and assists (8.3) per game, and has long shot MVP odds at Tipico Sportsbook. Along with Ball’s across-the-board production, the league’s highest-scoring team will desperately miss Rozier’s contributions to the offense, where he is averaging 17.7 points and 3.6 assists.

Such news isn’t ideal for the Hornets who have lost three straight games and will now be without multiple starters for the time being. And with the amount of damage it’s done to the team in just a short few hours, it is reasonable to wonder if there’s more to come.

As it stands, this could be a great opportunity for Miles Bridges to bring a bit more life to his Most Improved Player campaign. The Hornets will surely need all of his production as they look to avoid the play-in games and earn a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Hornets to be without LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, others against Sixers

The Charlotte Hornets will be without LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, and others when they take on the Philadelphia 76ers.

As the Philadelphia 76ers move forward with their road trip following a comeback win over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, they will be catching a bit of a break when they take on the Charlotte Hornets for two games starting on Monday.

After the Sixers have been dealing with the league’s health and safety protocols, they will be facing a Hornets team that is dealing with protocol issues of their own.

Charlotte will be without LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, Mason Plumlee, and Jalen McDaniels who have all entered the health and safety protocols and are expected to miss several games.

Ball has been having a terrific season averaging 20 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds while shooting 39.1% from deep and it is upsetting to see him enter the protocols. Rozier is averaging 17.7 points as well as that is another scorer Charlotte will be missing. However, just like how other teams did not show sympathy for the Sixers when they were so shorthanded, Philadelphia is not going to show much sympathy for the Hornets.

WATCH: Courtside view of Terry Rozier’s crazy handles vs. Wizards

Terry Rozier put Aaron Holiday on skates in Monday night’s victory.

LaMelo Ball isn’t the only Charlotte Hornet that has a smooth handle.

In Monday’s victory against the Washington Wizards, Terry Rozier showcased his skills with the rock in his hands.

While dribbling to his right on the perimeter, Rozier put the ball on a string, pushing it out ahead of him before pulling it back behind his back to hit a smooth jumpshot.

Wizards guard Aaron Holiday had no chance to defend Rozier on this play as he was put on skates for the whole arena to see.

The Hornets won the game 109-103 while Rozier finished with a game-high 32 points on 8-of-11 shooting from downtown.

On this day, legendary Boston Celtics team president and coach Red Auerbach passed away in 2006.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, legendary Celtics team president and coach Arnold “Red” Auerbach passed away at the age of 89 in 2006. Auerbach assembled a career in basketball unparalleled in its time and to this day, winning nine titles with the team as a coach, and seven more as an executive.

He joined the franchise in 1950 after stints coaching the Washington Capitols (now defunct) in the Basketball Association of America (BAA – a precursor league to the NBA) and at the NCAA level as an assistant coach with the Duke Blue Devils before joining the Celtics.

Red — as he was often called — transformed the game with his emphasis on the fast break and team-focused play reliant on ball movement at all positions.

Terry Rozier downgraded to questionable for Wednesday’s opener

The Hornets guard missed the final three preseason games with a sprained left ankle.

The Charlotte Hornets may not have their full starting lineup for Wednesday’s opener against the Indiana Pacers after all.

Terry Rozier has been downgraded from probable to questionable following this Wednesday morning’s shootaround, per Hornets PR.

Rozier sprained his ankle prior to the Hornets’ second preseason game, ultimately missing the final three preseason contests.

If Rozier is unable to go against the Pacers, look for Cody Martin to step into the starting lineup.

‘He is special’: Terry Rozier offers high praise for James Bouknight

Rozier spoke very highly of Bouknight over the offseason, and the veteran once again gave him some praise.

Terry Rozier spoke very highly of rookie James Bouknight over the offseason, and the Charlotte Hornets veteran once again offered some praise for the 11th overall pick.

Rozier is among the Hornets veterans that have offered Bouknight plenty of guidance to this point. He has seen him up close throughout training camp and the preseason, and has been thoroughly impressed by what he has seen so far.

Bouknight responded by averaging 15.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, one assist and one steal in four preseason games. His 63 total points were third-most among all rookies.

“He is special,” Rozier said on Tuesday. “He is a guy that probably won’t win Rookie of the Year but in a couple of years down the line, he’ll be a hard matchup. He’ll be a starter in the league and be a hard matchup for anybody going up against him. He is one of those types of guys. He has got a lot to learn but he is special and I don’t say that about too many rookies.”

Bouknight represents a big part of the future in Charlotte and should see plenty of playing time this season. He has the ability to give the Hornets a boost of offense off the bench, one area from which the team will greatly benefit.

With steady improvement over the next few years, Bouknight could emerge as one of the top players from this draft class. Rozier certainly won’t be surprised to see that happen.
