Texans release S Terrence Brooks

The Houston Texans have released safety Terrence Brooks as part of their moves to finalized a 53-man roster.

Not all former New England Patriots players have a spot on the Houston Texans’ roster in the Nick Caserio era.

According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, the Texans cut safety Terrence Brooks on Tuesday in their scramble to finalize their 53-man roster by 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

Brooks was with the Texans in 2021 and played 11 games for Houston, starting in three of them. The former Baltimore Ravens 2014 third-round pick knocked away a pass and tallied 21 combined tackles.

On Aug. 15, coach Lovie Smith told reporters that Brooks “stood out” during training camp when talking about the depth of the position. However, relative to the 53-man roster on Aug. 30, Brooks has been left out.

Texans still seek to improve safety through free agency and the draft

The Houston Texans may not be done with addressing the safety position through free agency and the NFL draft.

The Houston Texans have their safety situation shored up for the time being.

The club re-signed Terrence Brooks and still have veterans Jonathan Owens and Eric Murray on the roster. Throw in the versatility of Lonnie Johnson to go from cornerback to safety, and the Texans have players who can at least dress on game days and fill out the roster.

Houston still has a big void to fill with the departure of Justin Reid, a former 2019 Ed Block Courage Award winner, who signed a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency.

As offseason workouts kicked off for the Texans Monday at NRG Stadium, coach Lovie Smith expressed confidence in who the club currently has under contract.

“As we go forward, Jonathan Owens did a few good things last year, he played,” said Smith. “He fits the profile of what we’re looking for. Eric Murray, same thing, did some good things. I believe in him. He’s smart. We have a new safeties coach that loves him, also. Terrence Brooks, we’re bringing back three guys that have played a lot of football that we feel good about.”

The Texans brought in Joe Danna as their safeties coach. Danna had previously spent the past five seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching defensive backs in various capacities.

Whether through the addition of assistant coaches or retaining existing talent, Smith knows the Texans still have work to do in acquiring talent on the backend.

“There is still free agency going on and there’s a draft going on, and we’re going to improve the club still with that,” Smith said. “In an ideal world we’re going to dress four safeties, have five safeties that you feel good about. That’s the goal.”

While it makes sense for the Texans to draft Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton or Georgia’s Lewis Cine, the end of the month will reveal whether general manager Nick Caserio and the personnel department similarly thought it was sensible to invest capital in a young safety.

Texans re-sign safety Terrence Brooks to 1-year contract

The Houston Texans have brought back safety Terrence Brooks on a one-year contract.

The Houston Texans are keeping some continuity on the backend.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans have re-signed safety Terrence Brooks to a one-year contract worth $2 million.

Brooks played 11 games for the Texans in 2021, starting in three games. The 5-11, 205-pound defensive back produced 21 combined tackles and a pass breakup.

The former Baltimore Raven, Philadelphia Eagle, New York Jet, and New England Patriot sustained a lung contusion on Oct. 17 in the 31-3 loss at the Indianapolis Colts. Brooks stayed overnight in an Indianapolis area hospital for observation.

Brooks played 179 snaps on defense for Houston along with 183 snaps on special teams.

Defensive back Cre’von LeBlanc was placed on the COVID-19 practice squad list.

Houston faces the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15 to close out their season series. The Texans beat the Jaguars in Week 1 37-21 at NRG Stadium. Jacksonville is working through their own issues as they fired Urban Meyer early Thursday morning.

Texans activate S Terrence Brooks from injured reserve

The Houston Texans will be getting some help along the backend as they prepare to take on the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Nissan Stadium.

The Texans announced they have activated safety Terrence Brooks from injured reserve. Brooks had been on the reserve since he sustained a lung contusion in Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts. Brooks had to stay overnight after the game in an Indianapolis hospital for observation.

The club placed linebacker Hardy Nickerson on injured reserve, where he will have to remain for at least three weeks. Nickerson had been a non-participant in practice all week with a concussion.

Houston designated defensive end Derek Rivers as their standard elevation from the practice squad. Rivers will replace defensive end Jonathan Greenard, who was questionable with a foot injury, but ultimately stayed behind in Houston.

Texans S Terrence Brooks questionable to return with chest injury

Houston Texans safety Terrence Brooks is questionable to return against the Indianapolis Colts with a chest injury.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans safety Terrence Brooks sustained a chest injury midway through the first quarter of Sunday’s Week 6 match against the Indianapolis Colts. According to the Texans, Brooks’ return to the game is questionable.

Brooks’ injury occurred amid a 51-yard touchdown reception between quarterback Carson Wentz and wideout Parris Campbell to give the Colts a 7-0 lead over the Texans. As Campbell made his way to the end zone, it appeared that the receiver’s foot propelled Brooks’ chest, as the safety fell to the ground.

Brooks was making his first start as a Texan in place of third-year defensive back Lonnie Johnson, who has now filled the void for the injured safety.

Defensive coordinator Lovie Smith’s preaching of takeaways is starting to manifest. The challenge now is for the Texans to carry such momentum into the regular season.
