Key matchups for Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills

Key matchups for Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills

After starting the regular season 0-2, the Jacksonville Jaguars look to get in the win column for the first time this year as they travel to Buffalo for Monday Night Football in Week 3.

This week the Jaguars are still searching for their identity on offense and are currently facing scrutiny for their inconsistent offensive execution and play-calling. This could prove detrimental in trying to keep up with the Bills, which feature one of the powerhouse offenses in the AFC, led by quarterback Josh Allen.

Week 3 of the regular season is now a must-win for the Jaguars and they must prove they can contend with top teams in the conference like the Bills. Finding their offensive identity and consistency will be key, and if they fail to do so at this crucial point of the season on the national stage, it will become fair to wonder if their issues can be fixed this year.

With that in mind, Jaguars Wire is here to identify three key matchups for Jacksonville’s Week 3 road matchup against Buffalo, which the Jaguars must win to avoid digging themselves into a deeper hole.

Jaguars WR Christian Kirk vs. Bills’ linebackers and slot cornerback

Through two games, the Jaguars starting slot receiver has just two catches on seven targets for 29 yards. While it is early in the season, Kirk’s lack of significant targets has been concerning, especially amid Jacksonville’s offensive struggles.

Yet, Monday night presents an opportunity for Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor and head coach Doug Pederson to get Kirk heavily involved in the offensive game plan.

The Bills’ man coverage rate this season is just 20 percent as they remain a zone-heavy, two-high safety team that will leave plenty of green grass. That creates an advantage for Kirk, who has a knack for identifying the soft spots in zone coverage.

A top target in the middle of the field for quarterback Trevor Lawrence over the last two seasons, Kirk led the Jaguars with 1,108 receiving yards in 2022 and was on track for over 1,000 in 2023 before a Week 13, year-ending injury. He has proven productive and effective with an average target separation of over three yards in the last two seasons.

With linebacker Terrel Bernard and nickel corner Taron Johnson out for Monday night’s bout, Buffalo could be thin at both spots, meaning Jacksonville could open up its passing game with Kirk as the focal point.

Baylon Spector and Cam Lewis are expected to start in place of Bernard and Johnson, respectively.

Jacksonville’s defense vs. Buffalo’s offense

While the Jaguars’ offense has sputtered to this point, Jacksonville’s defense is respectable, and daring in coverage.

According to Next Gen Stats, Jacksonville aligned its outside corners in press coverage on 36 percent of snaps. That is the fourth-highest mark in the league, showing that defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen trusts his corners on an island.

The unit deploys Cover 1 coverage 53% of the time, per Hayden Winks, despite the absence of cornerback Tyson Campbell. Nielsen utilizes broad man coverage on 52.6 percent of opposing dropbacks, the highest rate in the NFL.

Thus far, passers are averaging 6.5 passing yards per play against the Jaguars, ranking No. 21 in the league. Quarterbacks are struggling to score through the air against Jacksonville, though, as Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa and Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson combined to throw for one touchdown in Weeks 1-2.

Jacksonville’s man coverage will be tested against arguably the best NFL signal-caller not named Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and his offensive coordinator Joe Brady on Monday night.

Next Gen Stats show Allen producing the lowest air yards per attempt of his career at 7.4 this season, despite his career-high 73.8% completion percentage through the first two games. This shows that Brady is allowing Allen to distribute the ball around the offense and trusting receivers to compete after the catch.

Considering how difficult Allen is to defend as both a passer and runner, there’s a possibility Nielsen could veer off his man coverage path and play more zone this week. Perhaps it is unlikely given his tendencies as a play-caller, but this is something to keep in mind ahead of Monday night.

Not only will Allen present a tough task, but so will tight end Dalton Kincaid, running back James Cook and receiver Khalil Shakir. The latter owns the highest catch rate of all wide receivers in the league at 88.7 percent.

If Jacksonville can force Allen into bad decisions against its man-heavy defense and limit his rushing opportunities, the Jaguars’ struggling offense should obtain more opportunities to find a rhythm compared to previous games.

Jacksonville’s offense vs. Buffalo’s defense

While Kirk could be the focus of the Jaguars’ passing offense against the Bills, the unit must perform better situationally across the board in its attempt to establish an identity of any sort.

It starts up front. Lawrence’s protection must improve Monday night against a strong Bills pass rush featuring Von Miller and Gregory Rousseau.

Lawrence has been sacked on a league-high 11.5 percent of dropbacks this season, according to Next Gen Stats. Perhaps Lawrence is responsible for some of the pressure he has faced, but Pro Football Focus dings Jacksonville’s offensive line for allowing six of the seven sacks he has taken.

Next Gen Stats also notes the Jaguars own the third-worst time to pressure in the NFL in 2024, 2.57 seconds.

While explosive plays have occasionally popped up from the likes of running back Travis Etienne Jr. and rookie wideout Brian Thomas Jr, the Jaguars must do a better job of winning on early downs to make third downs more manageable and become less reliant on chunk gains.

Jacksonville has converted just over 26% of its third-down attempts, the fifth-worst mark in the league ahead of Denver, Atlanta, Cleveland and Carolina. The offense will sail much smoother if it can improve drastically in this area.

The Jaguars will be without versatile tight end Evan Engram again this week after suffering a hamstring injury during pregame warmups last Sunday. His absence is why Kirk will be the X-factor for the Jaguars’ passing offense, paired with the Bills’ top linebacker and nickel cornerback out.

Pederson cannot afford his team to fall to a 0-3 record. His defense is capable of helping win games, but it is Jacksonville’s offense, Pederson’s bread and butter, costing the Jaguars the most.

That has to change on Monday night.

Sean McDermott: Bills will be without Terrel Bernard for extended period

Not good:

The Buffalo Bills defense had several players step up in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins. That’s going to have to continue.

Following the Bills’ 31-10 win over the Dolphins (1-1), head coach Sean McDermott updated the injury status of linebacker Terrel Bernard.

Bernard’s injury occurred during the first quarter and the Bills (2-0) reported the linebacker sustained a pectoral injury.

On Friday, McDermott said Bernard is slated to miss “multiple weeks.” The coach added injured reserve is not out of the question, either:

Already down one starting linebacker in Matt Milano (bicep) for an extended period, losing Bernard is not ideal.

In Miami, Baylon Spector entered the game when Bernard went down. Spector ended the contest with a team-high 10 tackles, as did Dorian Williams. Moving forward, Spector and Williams are the likely starters for Buffalo’s defense at linebacker.

While the Bills did get good efforts out of Spector and Williams in Week 2, it’s going to be a huge ask for those to continue going forward. Buffalo will have their fingers crossed.

Bills Wire will provide updates on Bernard as information is made available.

Josh Allen, Terrel Bernard reflect on being captains: ‘I don’t take it lightly’

An honor:

There is a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of quarterback Josh Allen and linebacker Terrel Bernard as the Buffalo Bills inch toward their first game of the 2024 NFL season.

Not that they aren’t used to that, but it has kicked up a notch.

Allen was once again named a team captain for the 2024 Bills. Bernard, as the leader and play caller on defense, earned that honor for the first time in his career this week.

And that’s it. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott named eight captains last year but it’s only the pair for 2024.

Reflecting on that, both players said they understand the importance of that added pressure.

“It’s a huge honor,” Allen said.

“I don’t take it lightly,” Bernard added.

McDermott did note that there will be a 10 player “leadership council” alongside the two captains this season. That will likely include someone such as pass rusher Von Miller, who was a full captain himself last year.

Still, there are only two players with the letter “C” on their chest and Allen and Bernard recognize that.

For more from Allen and Bernard on being named team captains, see the attached WKBW-TV clip below:

Bills only name two team captains for the 2024 NFL season

One you’ll know already:

The Buffalo Bills have named their team captains for the 2024 NFL season.

One was not a surprise, the other is new, and that being the end of the list is a bit of a surprise in itself.

Last season, head coach Sean McDermott had eight total captains for the team that has 53 players on it plus a practice squad. This upcoming year there will only be two:

  • Quarterback Josh Allen
  • Linebacker Terrel Bernard

Of the eight captains last year, only Allen remains as one. Bernard was in his first season starting for the Bills defense in 2023 and had not yet been named one.

Among the 2023 leaders, six are no longer on the team. The Bills released center Mitch Morse and safety Jordan Poyer. Wide receiver Gabe Davis agreed to a big deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars while linebacker Tyler Matakevich ended up back with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The other is safety Micah Hyde. He is considering retirement and has not yet officially decided his future as he remains a free agent.

That leaves us with only five names.

The final 2023 captain is still on the team: Pass rusher Von Miller. It’s unclear what Miller’s role will be in 2024 as he’s now two years removed from a serious ACL injury so that could be playing a role in him not getting a “C.”

However, McDermott said via video conference on Wednesday that Allen and Bernard will have a type of “leadership council” alongside them. Miller is likely involved with that, which McDermott said would include 10 total players.

WATCH: Buffalo Bills players try a ‘milk challenge’

Milk:

Do you know milk?

You probably do better than plenty of Buffalo Bills players.

The likes of Josh Allen, Spencer Brown, Dawson Knox and more players decided to sit down for a “milk challenge” earlier this offseason.

The goal was to try and guess the correct type in a blind challenge.

Bills surprisingly don’t crack PFF’s top-10 linebacker units

#Bills surprisingly don’t crack PFF’s top-10 linebacker units:

The Bills’ linebackers group has been a formidable presence under head coach Sean McDermott. The team has drafted some impact starters and rotation players under his and general manager Brandon Beane’s watch.

Such players have included Matt Milano and more recent addition, Terrel Bernard, as well as former starter and defensive play-caller Tremaine Edmunds.

They’ve not been without weak spots, perhaps no more visible than in the amount of ground yards they’ve given up at times to opposing running backs in McDermott’s “bend-don’t-break” defensive schemes.

That and Milano has occasionally missed time due to injuries.

Nonetheless, the group has been effective, with Milano in particular standing out in his play. This is why a new list from Pro Football Focus (PFF) that ranks the best units around the NFL might surprise many who hold Buffalo’s group in high regard.

The outlet shared their lists of different position groups and how they ranked them,

The evaluation was exclusively on off-ball linebackers and not outside linebackers who function as edge defenders, such as Bills OLB Von Miller, for example.

In their 2024 rankings for every linebacker group in the NFL, PFF does have the Bills linebacker group included but has them ranked at 11th in the league.

Obviously things can change once the regular season kicks off, and the Bills were without Milano for a large part of their 2023 season due to a right tibial plateau fracture (a tibia fracture just below the knee) which may have been a factor in this offseason assessment.

In Milano’s absence, Terrel Bernard would see increased time, logging 143 tackles along with six and a half sacks to go with three fumble recoveries and two interceptions.

Ahead of them were the Jets (1st overall), 49ers (2nd), Bears (3rd), Patriots (4th), Giants (5th), Ravens (6th), Jaguars (7th), Browns (8th), Saints (9th), and Vikings (10th).

With that, here is what PFF had to say about their ranking for the Bills in their 2024 NFL linebacker unit rankings

11. BUFFALO BILLS

Assuming Matt Milano can play at the level he was at before going down with a season-ending injury in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023, the Bills will be in a good spot at linebacker again.

Milano was one of the best coverage linebackers in the NFL in 2022, earning an 83.2 PFF coverage grade. Next to him, Terrel Bernard proved himself to be a solid starter in his second NFL season, producing a 65.9 PFF grade on 1,031 snaps.

Bills release hype video for the defense

#Bills release hype video for the defense:

The Buffalo Bills’ offseason has been highlighted by their departures in 2024. There are a lot of question marks on the roster.

But the defense still has some cornerstone pieces to celebrate such as the linebacker duo of Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard, trade-deadline acquisition Rasul Douglas in the secondary, and Ed Oliver leading the charge from the middle of the defensive line.

Why not celebrate the positives? The best way to do so is in the hype video shared by the Bills in the YouTube player above.

Bills’ Terrel Bernard excited to have Matt Milano back at minicamp just like you

#Bills’ Terrel Bernard excited to have Matt Milano back at minicamp:

It was always going to be a long and winding road but it’s finally coming close to its conclusion for Matt Milano.

The veteran and All-Pro linebacker for the Buffalo Bills sustained a season-ending knee injury last season. He has been out since then but was finally back at 2024 minicamp practices.

“It’s big,” head coach Sean McDermott said on Milano’s return to limited workouts this spring.

Milano was injured five games into the 2023 campaign but in that time the new tandem he built with Terrel Bernard gave Buffalo optimism. The Bills were fresh off of losing Pro Bowl linebacker Tremaine Edmunds prior to last year and Bernard–who also did not play at all during the preseason–filled in seamlessly.

Because of that quickly-built duo, Bernard said at minicamp he’s happy to see Milano back just like fans are.

“It was awesome, man. Just having him to talk to, communicate to, go through some of the indy drills with,” Bernard said. “His presence is felt.”
