Report: Texans bring in Baylor LB Terrel Bernard for a visit

The Houston Texans brought in former Baylor Bears linebacker Terrel Bernard for a visit.

The Houston Texans are taking a look at the linebacking corps in the 2022 NFL draft.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans brought in former Baylor Bears linebacker Terrel Bernard for a visit.

The 6-1, 222-pound linebacker generated 103 combined tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and four pass breakups through 13 games in his final season with Baylor.

Bernard fits a similar profile to last year’s fifth-round linebacker from TCU, Garret Wallow. Both are of comparable size and are quick linebackers who should be able to play coverage for the Texans in Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 scheme.

The eight-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll member graduated from nearby La Porte High School. Bernard has an undergraduate degree in health, kinesiology, and leisure studies as he graduated in Aug. 2020 and has been working on his master’s degree in sports management since.

Baylor’s Terrel Bernard could be perfect draft addition to Cowboys’ rejuvenated LB room

The Dallas Cowboys are going to need some help at the linebacker position in 2022. If previous trends are any indication, the club will look to April’s draft to find the perfect compliment for 2021 rookie of the year Micah Parsons. While the club remains hopeful for a full recovery, a midseason ACL tear sidelined Parsons’ draft-classmate Jabril Cox.

With Leighton Vander Esch and Keanu Neal hitting free agency, it’s likely the club goes back to the well for another collegiate standout. They may not have to stray far from The Star, as Baylor’s Terrel Bernard is an intriguing prospect in this year’s class. The La Porte High School star stayed in state for his college ball and shined brightly for the Bears. His intelligence (2018 All-Academic Team as a freshman and sophomore) comes through in his play identification and his physical traits are just as tantalizing.

Three Baylor players that can haunt Texas

These three Baylor players could end up haunting the Longhorns.

We are approaching the spookiest day of the year, and the Longhorns are also approaching a make or break game with their Week 9 matchup against No. 16 Baylor.

Texas started off Big 12 play strong, but have since crashed and burned two straight games. In each loss, the Longhorns gave up double-digit leads, allowing Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to swoop in and steal the victory like those kids that take more than one candy on Halloween.

While the Longhorns looked abysmal at times during those games, they have shown the ability to be a dominant team, as long as it is in the first half. With two weeks to prepare for this Baylor matchup, you would think that they have a strong game plan that can slow down this Baylor program, who is hoping to remain in one of the top two spots of the Big 12 rankings.

Baylor has a lot of contributors, but there are three players that have stood out. If the Longhorns do not prepare and play well enough, these players will end up haunting the Longhorns and causing Texas to leave Waco as sad as a kid who gets a fruit on Halloween.

Let’s start with the quarterback

Texas Football preseason preview: Baylor Bears

Baylor is coming off a historic 2019 season and will be looking to repeat it this season. Here is a 2020 season preview for the Bears:

Baylor was a surprise team in all of college football last season, finishing with an 11-3 record. The Bears made it to the Big 12 championship game and the Sugar Bowl, before losing both matchups to Oklahoma and Georgia respectively.

From a Longhorn perspective, Baylor dominated Texas from start to finish in their 2019 matchup. Tim Beck’s offense struggle mightily, only scoring 10 points. Seven of them came from a Daniel Young touchdown with 0:01 left on the clock. Sam Ehlinger was held to just 200 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.

Coming off its historic season, Baylor will be slightly pivoting with a coaching change. Matt Rhule had been the head coach in Waco for three seasons and turned the Bears around from 1-11 and into a participant in a New Year’s Six bowl game.

It could be seen as a transition year for Baylor but if new head coach Dave Aranda has anything to say about it, his team will be back in the thick of the Big 12 championship hunt. A veteran quarterback mixed with a preseason first-team All-Big 12 star on defense gives Baylor hope in 2020.
