Frank Reich ‘not anticipating any big moves’ at WR after recent injuries

Even with the uncertainty surrounding the hamstring injury to DJ Chark, Panthers HC Frank Reich said he doesn’t anticipate any big moves at the WR position.

Plenty of Carolina Panthers were missing from practice this afternoon, just two days ahead of their preseason finale against the Detroit Lions. And while most of those absences were seemingly no big deal, there’s one that’s sticking out like a sore thumb—or, in this instance, a leg.

When asked about the status of wide receiver DJ Chark following the session, head coach Frank Reich declined to provide any details. A team spokesman would, however, report a hamstring injury for the the 26-year-old.

Chark, who signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Panthers this spring, came into Carolina with quite an extensive injury history. He has yet to play a full season in his five-year NFL career, most recently having missed six games in 2022 due to an ankle injury.

Regardless of what may or may not be another extensive setback, Reich said he doesn’t see the team making any “big” additions at the position.

“Not anticipating any big moves at this point,” he said. “But we’ll continue to evaluate that day by day.”

The Panthers are also currently without Terrace Marshall Jr. (back) and Damiere Byrd (hamstring), who was placed on injured reserve.

Former LSU receiver DJ Chark suffers hamstring injury at Panthers camp

DJ Chark suffered a hamstring injury, though coach Frank Reich didn’t go into further detail.

Former LSU star [autotag]DJ Chark Jr.[/autotag] has suffered a hamstring injury in practice with the Carolina Panthers. Coach Frank Reich declined to go into further detail, but a team spokesperson confirmed to reporters that Chark had indeed suffered a hamstring injury.

An offseason addition from Detroit by way of Jacksonville, the former second-round pick was expected to play a major role in a passing offense led by rookie Bryce Young. He’s the second former LSU receiver to see a preseason injury with the Panthers as [autotag]Terrace Marshall Jr.[/autotag] was carted off the practice field with a back injury that has held him out since.

Chark signed with the Lions last offseason and returned to form after a season-ending injury limited him to just four games with the Jaguars in 2021. He made 30 catches for 502 yards and three touchdowns.

Carolina will hope one of its offensive additions will be back on the field sooner rather than later.

19 Panthers not expected to play vs. Giants on Friday

The Panthers are expected to sit out 19 players in tonight’s preseason matchup with the Giants.

The Carolina Panthers’ search for Austin Corbett’s temporary replacement will go on without one, if not the top contender tonight.

As expected, offensive lineman Cade Mays is one of 19 players not in line to play for Carolina in Friday’s exhibition against the New York Giants. The second-year hog molly, who is dealing with a neck injury, started at right guard in last weekend’s preseason opener.

With Mays out, rookie Chandler Zavala will get the nod on the interior. The 2023 fourth-round pick, who missed part of the summer due to a hamstring tweak, has gotten a chunk of first-team reps this past week.

Here’s the team’s “inactive” list in its entirety:

  • DE Henry Anderson
  • DT Derrick Brown
  • G Austin Corbett
  • OLB Brian Burns
  • QB Andy Dalton
  • OT Cameron Erving
  • OLB Marquis Haynes Sr.
  • OLB Justin Houston
  • DE Antwuan Jackson
  • CB Greg Mabin
  • WR Terrace Marshall Jr.
  • CB Mac McCain III
  • G Cade Mays
  • K Eddy Piñeiro
  • RB Miles Sanders
  • TE Stephen Sullivan
  • OLB Jordan Thomas
  • CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III
  • WR Derek Wright

Report: Terrace Marshall Jr. expected to miss ‘a few weeks’ with back injury

Panthers WR Terrace Marshall Jr., who was already ruled out of Friday’s exhibition against the Giants, is reportedly expected to miss a few weeks due to his back injury.

Terrace Marshall Jr. may be out for more than just tomorrow’s exhibition against the New York Giants.

According to Sheena Quick of FOX Sports Radio 1340 AM on Wednesday night, the third-year wide receiver is expected to miss a few weeks due to his back injury. Joe Person of The Athletic later backed up the report.

Earlier in the day, head coach Frank Reich confirmed that Marshall Jr. would not be a go in the team’s second preseason outing of the summer.

“It’s pretty much like I said the other day. Sometimes with these things, you gotta let ’em settle down for two, three, four days,” Reich said of evaluating the setback. “So, that’s what we’re in the process of doing.”

With fellow wideout Damiere Byrd having been placed on the injured reserve list yesterday afternoon, the Panthers are heading into the Meadowlands quite a bit thinner at the position.

Reich added that quarterback Andy Dalton (back), running back Miles Sanders (groin) and guard Cade Mays (neck) are also not expected to play tomorrow.

Panthers will not play Terrace Marshall Jr. vs. Giants on Friday

Panthers WR Terrace Marshall Jr. will not play in Friday’s preseason game against the Giants.

Terrace Marshall Jr.’s potential breakout season will be put on hold, again.

Head coach Frank Reich spoke with reporters late Wednesday morning, just a few days ahead of their second preseason contest of the summer. When asked about the status of Marshall Jr., who is currently dealing with a back injury, he said the team is still evaluating the situation.

“It’s pretty much like I said the other day,” Reich stated. “Sometimes with these things, you gotta let ’em settle down for two, three, four days. So, that’s what we’re in the process of doing.”

He then added that Marshall Jr. will not play in Friday’s matchup against the New York Giants.

The third-year wide receiver was carted away from Monday’s practice with what Reich later confirmed to be a tweak of his back. While Reich didn’t seem too concerned about the setback, the severity of the injury—obviously—remains unknown.

Reich went on to note that right guard Cade Mays, who recently sustained a neck injury, will also be held out of action.

Terrace Marshall Jr. carted off from practice with back injury

Panthers WR Terrace Marshall Jr., who was carted off from Monday’s practice, “tweaked a little something in his back” according to HC Frank Reich.

Terrace Marshall Jr. is finally looking to break out here in 2023. But he may have just suffered a setback to those hopes.

The third-year wideout was carted off the practice field on Monday. Based on an initial observation from Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, Marshall Jr. didn’t seem to sustain too serious of an injury.

Head coach Frank Reich was asked about Marshall Jr. following this afternoon’s session.

“He tweaked a little something in his back,” Reich replied. “So, again, that checked out. I haven’t got the report on it yet.

Marshall Jr. is entering the third year of his NFL career. The former second-round pick, who had been tabbed as a potential breakout star for much of his first two seasons, amassed just 490 receiving yards and one touchdown off 45 receptions between 2021 and 2022.

He is currently listed with the second-team receivers on Carolina’s current depth chart, behind veteran DJ Chark.
