Patriots waive injured LB Terez Hall

Patriots announce LB Terez Hall has been released

Another roster spot has opened for the New England Patriots with the team announcing the release of linebacker Terez Hall on Thursday.

Hall, who missed multiple training camp practices, was released with an injury designation. That means he’ll be subjected to going on waivers and giving other teams a chance to put in a claim for him.

If he clears waivers unclaimed, he’d revert back to injured reserve for the Patriots until the end of the season. It’s a tough break for the former undrafted free agent defender, who hasn’t appeared in a game since the 2020 season.

Injuries have been a lingering issue for the fifth-year linebacker, who spent the 2021 season on the Reserve/PUP list. He was ultimately cut from the Patriots in May 2022, before re-signing again on the practice squad that December.

With wide receiver Ed Lee being released on Wednesday, the Patriots now have two open spots on their roster.

59 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 59 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 59 jersey number

The New England Patriots are now 59 days away from opening up their 2023 regular season at home against the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles.

So we’re continuing our countdown series by listing every Patriots player that has ever worn the No. 59 jersey.

Linebacker Terez Hall is the current Patriots player that wears the number, but there have been a total of 23 players that have worn it throughout franchise history. There are more recent examples like linebacker Anfernee Jennings, and then there are examples like Brian Stenger, who wore the number all the way back in 1973.

Patriots sign LB to practice squad after losing Cameron McGrone

The Patriots added another linebacker after losing Cameron McGrone to the Colts.

The New England Patriots didn’t waste time adding another linebacker to their practice squad, after losing Cameron McGrone to the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.

It’s a blast from the past for the Patriots, who announced the signing of veteran linebacker Terez Hall to the practice squad.

Hall appeared in eight games with New England back in 2020 and started in four games. So there’s definitely some familiarity as far as the team’s defensive concepts are concerned. He wrapped up that season with 50 total tackles and two pass deflections.

McGrone, a former fifth-round draft pick for the Patriots, was plucked off their practice squad by the Colts. He was a promising player looking to carve out a spot for himself in a talented linebackers room.

Now, he’ll have an opportunity to do so in Indy, while Hall will try to do the same in his return to New England.

Patriots release veteran WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey from practice squad, host LB for workout

The Patriots released Lil’Jordan Humphrey and hosted a free agent linebacker for a workout

The New England Patriots had a busy Tuesday afternoon on the roster front with the team announcing they had released veteran receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey from the practice squad.

Humphrey became a fan-favorite for the team during the preseason, but he was never able to catch on in meaningful games for the Patriots, despite appearing in six regular season games for the team. He had only been targeted four times for 20 yards.

Given his rare size for a receiver, he was typically utilized as an extra blocker. There was even talks of moving him into more of a joker tight end role as well, but things never worked out in the end.

This still may not be the last the Patriots see of Humphrey considering he has been released and signed multiple times.

Along with releasing the 24-year-old receiver, the team also reportedly had linebacker Terez Hall, a former Patriot, in for a workout.

Hall was actually released by the team back in May after failing a physical. So the team is obviously getting back around to him and seeing where his physical conditioning is at these days.

Whether that leads to an actual signing or not remains to be seen.

Patriots place eight players on PUP list, including Stephon Gilmore and Chase Winovich

These players aren’t entirely ready to practice, but they can come off the PUP list at any time.

Training camp is just days away and the New England Patriots are less than two months from hitting the field for a hopeful 2021 season.

For the most part, the Patriots’ roster is healthy and ready for action. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that eight players will be opening on the active/physically unable to perform list (PUP) to open up training camp.

CB Stephon Gilmore, OLB Chase Winovich, QB Jarrett Stidham, LB Terez Hall, DT Byron Cowart, ST Brandon King, TE Dalton Keene and WR Devin Smith are on the list.

Gilmore did report to training camp after an uncertain offseason due to contract issues, but he’s still nursing the season-ending quad injury that put him out in 2020. Gilmore alluded to the idea that he’s doing much better and should be ready for the season.

Training camp begins next week.

Patriots Week 17 inactives: C David Andrews, RG Shaq Mason, LB Terez Hall out

The Patriots are losing some much-needed depth on the offensive line.

The New England Patriots will be without two starting offensive linemen in their Week 17 matchup against the New York Jets.

New England is 6-9 and looking for a win to cap off the season. That task will be much more difficult with center David Andrews (calf) and right guard Shaq Mason (foot) out of the mix. Anfernee Jennings, Terez Hall, Brian Hoyer, D’Angelo Ross and Dee Virgin will also miss the contest.

Running back Damien Harris was placed on the injured reserve list with an ankle injury and he’ll miss the remainder of his second season in the league. The Patriots are extremely slim at running back, with Sony Michel and and James White as the primary options.

As a kid, Terez Hall’s favorite LB was Jamie Collins — not Jerod Mayo

A missed opportunity for Terez Hall to get brownie points with his boss.

Linebacker Terez Hall grew up a New England Patriots fan, which made his journey to the NFL even more surreal. During the pre-draft process, the undrafted free agent interviewed with the team he’d rooted for so heartily and studied so carefully as a fan.

“You know, it was funny sometimes, but it was serious most of the time,” Hall told reporters on Tuesday. “Like, coming here, when I grew up, this was my favorite team whatever, so, my biggest deal is,  I’m looking at all the coaches . . . I knew everyone on the coaching staff. Like I knew them like, when they were players.”

And then he landed on a team where Jerod Mayo was coaching linebackers. In 2020, Mayo coaches Hall and the rest of the inside linebackers.

Surely, Hall is working with his childhood idol, right? Was Mayo Hall’s favorite player as a kid?

“It wasn’t Coach Mayo. I felt like . . . it wasn’t Coach Mayo. It was Jamie Collins, man. Jamie Collins was my favorite player,” Hall said. “Just in general. I got an opportunity to play with him last year, and he solidified everything I thought. If you go back and look at 2015 . . . when I was in high school. You’ll see, I’ve got pictures of Jamie Collins I have tweeted out when I was younger. It’s just so crazy I got an opportunity to play with him.”

Hall certainly missed an opportunity to get brownie points with his boss — and if he doesn’t play much in Week 15, we’ll know why.

In all seriousness, Hall is an undersized linebacker at 6-foot-2, 235 pounds, which is likely why he didn’t get drafted in 2019. But he spent a season on the Patriots’ practice squad, where he relayed plays for the scout team defense. In 2020, he’s gotten a promotion, with so much turnover at linebacker for New England. The Patriots saw Collins and Kyle Van Noy leave in free agency, and Dont’a Hightower opted out of 2020 due to the pandemic. Hall was thrust into an increased role — especially after Ja’Whaun Bentley suffered and injury — with 18 tackles on the season.

“I try to add something to it,” Hall said. “I try to add energy when I’m out on the field, getting guys fired up on the sideline to go take the field before we go on defense. Just something that motivates me to bring something towards the team.”
