Terence Davis: ‘I turned down good money to play in the Euroleague, I want to get back in the NBA’

Terence Davis, one of the top NBA free agents who went unsigned this past summer, joined the G League’s Rip City Remix after having spent the first four seasons of his career with the Toronto Raptors and, most recently, the Sacramento Kings. The former All-Rookie 2nd Team member sat down with HoopsHype to discuss his free agency experience, his recent Achilles tear, helping Sacramento end their playoff drought, and stories of his time around the league.

The 10 best remaining free agents the Boston Celtics can sign

Let’s take a look at some of the best remaining free agents who the Celtics could consider signing.

The Boston Celtics are coming off a disappointing campaign that ended in elimination by the Miami Heat in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals just when Boston hoped to get back to the NBA Finals. Since then, team president Brad Stevens has shaken up the roster by bringing on star big man Kristaps Porzingis while letting go of Marcus Smart and Grant Williams.

The team has made depth signings with Oshae Brissett and Dalano Banton, but the Celtics still need to address a few key areas. Chief among them is a point guard able to step into a bigger role if needed, but Boston now also needs depth at the guard, wing, forward, and big positions as well with between one and three roster spots pending team decisions on non-guaranteed players.

Let’s take a look at some of the best remaining free agents who the Celtics could consider signing on minimum deals to such an end.

In this exercise, we have omitted players who will likely earn more than a minimum deal given the Celtics’ proximity to the second apron.

Jones: Boston Celtics showing strong interest in ex-Kings guard Terence Davis

The rumor hints at bigger moves on the table for the Celtics’ backcourt players in the hours or days to come.

More clues on what the Boston Celtics might do in free agency are starting to percolate through the NBA media sphere. New reporting from ESPN’s Mark Jones has the Celtics “showing strong interest in free agent Terence Davis” with the “Milwaukee Bucks also considering Davis as an option.”

Davis is another low-cost backcourt option on the growing list of rumored Boston targets. He joins Toronto Raptors reserve point guard Dalano Banton on that list. The rumor suggests bigger moves involving the Celtics’ backcourt are on the table in the hours or days to come.

As for the fit in Boston, the 6-foot-4 Kings shooting guard put up a solid 6.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and an assist per game with Sacramento last season. The 26-year-old shot a respectable 42.3% from the floor, 36.6% from deep and 79.1% from the stripe.

Celtics projected to go for a wing, two forwards in 2023 free agency

It might seem early, but you can bet that the team’s front office already has its eyes on some potential candidates to pursue to shore up the team’s needs around the margins.

It is probably a bit early for most of us to be thinking about the 2023 NBA draft, never mind the summer free agency period that will follow it for the Boston Celtics, but you can bet that the team’s front office already has its eyes on some potential candidates to pursue to shore up the team’s needs around the margins.

And the Celtics’ front office is not alone in that regard, with some analysts already beginning to sniff around the pool of free agents that mike make sense for Boston to try and sign to a deal this summer.

One such analyst is Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, who has three such targets in mind for the Celtics — let’s take a look (and be sure to check out the full article).

Bleacher Report lists three players the Lakers should trade for

The Los Angeles Lakers should trade for these three players in a new list done by Bleacher Report.

The Los Angeles Lakers have started 10-10, which is far from what the team envisioned over the summer.

Los Angeles has championship aspirations, but it has not resembled a championship-caliber team with the on-court chemistry demonstrated so far on both ends of the floor.

Though injuries and setbacks have certainly affected how strong L.A. could be right now, browsing the trade market could be an option if the Lakers think the roster needs more changing.

In a new Bleacher Report article that lists trade targets for each team, three players were tied to the Lakers, starting with Detroit Pistons forward Jerami Grant:

The Lakers probably blocked themselves from making major moves when they dumped their remaining resources into the Russell Westbrook trade, but the one exception would be dealing Talen Horton-Tucker once he is trade eligible in mid-January.

His youth, defensive versatility and flashes of shot-creation could entice a future-focused shopper, and while he couldn’t anchor a deal for an elite, combining him with a sweetener or two might be enough for Jerami Grant. The Pistons must decide sooner than later if they want to cover the cost of Grant’s 2023 free agency, and if they don’t, the Lakers could grab him to up their athleticism, defense and scoring on the wing.

The other two players were Sacramento Kings guard Terence Davis and Portland Trail Blazers guard Ben McLemore:

It’s far more likely L.A. can only pursue deeply discounted players, so fliers on Terence Davis and Ben McLemore might be the best it can do. Neither is doing much at the moment, but Davis has shown three-and-D chops before, and McLemore has historically shot the three at a decent clip.

Among these three options. Grant is by far the best player. He’s a top scoring option for Detroit, and though he hasn’t been as efficient this year as last year, he would provide a tremendous presence at both ends for the Lakers with his size and versatility.

However, he’s making $20 million a year, which would require the Lakers to part ways with Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn to match the salaries.

Davis is a name Bleacher Report mentioned before, but he’s not a rotation player with the Kings. He’s a 6-foot-4 guard that has struggled on both ends of the floor this year, so the Lakers would be better off passing on that.

Then, there’s McLemore, who the Lakers let walk in free agency this summer. He signed a one-year deal for the minimum to go to Portland but also isn’t a member of the rotation. The Lakers already experimented with him, so bringing him back wouldn’t make sense.

Grant is the top choice here, but the Lakers still have time to determine if moves will be made as the trade deadline approaches in a few months.

On Friday, the Toronto Raptors released a statement after guard Terence Davis was arrested and charged with seven criminal offenses following an incident on Tuesday night with a woman in New York City.

Davis, who was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team, got into a verbal dispute with his girlfriend, which occurred near her son, at The Beekman Tower in midtown Manhattan around 8:30 p.m. Davis is accused of hitting the woman in her face and shattering her phone screen, according to the police report.

The 23-year-old was arraigned on two misdemeanor charges of assault, attempted assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal mischief, aggravated harassment and harassment. Greg Esposito, the defense attorney for Davis, said his client denies the charges but declined to offer further comment.

“Incidents of this kind are addressed and managed by the League through the Joint-NBPA Policy on Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse,” the organization said in a statement. “The Toronto Raptors take these issues very seriously, and we will fully cooperate and support the League in its investigation of this matter as we work to determine the appropriate next steps for our team.”

Davis signed with the Raptors last year as an undrafted free agent. He averaged 7.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 72 games played last season. He made six appearances during the playoffs, averaging 7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists.

Kendrick Perkins praised Terence Davis after All-Rookie selection

Davis became the 11th player in Raptors franchise history to earn NBA All-Rookie honors and was the first since Jonas Valanciunas in 2013.

Toronto Raptors guard Terence Davis on Tuesday was named to the 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie Second Team, the 11th player in franchise history to receive the honor and the first since Jonas Valanciunas in 2013.

Davis, who went undrafted, averaged 7.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 72 games played this season. He shot 45.6% from the field and 38.8% from 3-point range and finished fifth among qualified rookies in 3-point percentage and eighth in field-goal percentage.

The 23-year-old received 30 first-place votes from a panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters while he earned 36 second-team votes. He was the seventh-leading vote-getter in the final results and finished ahead of the likes of R.J. Barrett and Coby White among others.

After the results were announced, Davis received recognition from former NBA champion, and ESPN analyst, Kendrick Perkins on social media. Perkins apparently coached Davis last year at the NBA Draft Combine and knew he would be a steal this season.

Davis emerged as a key player for the Raptors and was the only player on the roster to appear in all 72 regular-season games. He scored in double figures 26 times and became the first rookie in team history to score at least 30 points off the bench when he recorded 31 points on Feb. 2.

NBA All-Rookie: Ja Morant, Zion Williamson headline the First Team

Grizzlies guard Ja Morant was the only rookie with First Team votes on all 100 ballots from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant, the 2019-20 NBA Rookie of the Year, and New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson headlined the 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie First Team, the league announced on Tuesday.

As the lone unanimous selection, Morant received NBA All-Rookie First Team votes on all 100 ballots from a global panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Joining Morant and Williamson on the First Team are Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, Miami Heat guard Kendrick Nunn and Golden State Warriors forward Eric Paschall.

With the selection of Morant and Clarke, the Grizzlies have multiple players on the NBA All-Rookie First Team for the first time since the 2001-02 season (Pau Gasol and Shane Battier). Meanwhile, Nunn is the first Heat player named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team since the 2008-09 season (Michael Beasley).

The 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie Second Team consisted of Heat guard Tyler Herro, Toronto Raptors guard Terence Davis II, Chicago Bulls guard Coby White, Charlotte Hornets forward P.J. Washington Jr. and Washington Wizards forward Rui Hachimura. Herro finished one voting point from earning a First Team selection.

Terence Davis ranks among the most efficient players in the playoffs

Raptors guard Terence Davis is averaging 8.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in five playoff appearances this season.

[jwplayer Ivrt47LY]

Toronto Raptors guard Terence Davis may only be averaging 8.2 points in five playoff appearances this season but the rookie from Ole Miss has been highly efficient during his time on the court.

Davis provided the majority of his damage in the first round against the Brooklyn Nets but has remained effective in the second round, too. Davis is shooting 67% from the field in the playoffs, including 50% (8-of-16) from 3-point range.

According to Synergy Sports, Davis ranks among the leaders in offensive efficiency. Davis is scoring 1.37 points per possession, which ranked second among qualified players as of Aug. 31. Since then, his average dropped slightly, down to 1.28 points, but still ranks in the 96th percentile among postseason players.

The efficient performance in the playoffs has been no fluke, either. Behind his solid play off of the bench this season, Davis managed to carve out a large role in head coach Nick Nurse’s rotation, posting 7.5 points per game in 72 appearances. He averaged 1.017 points per possession in the regular season, which ranked in the 68th percentile among all players.

The Raptors have consistently proven to have one of the best development programs in the NBA and Davis is another example of a tremendous addition through the draft. Davis appears to be poised for a long and productive career in the NBA as a result.

Terence Davis again calls for the arrests of Breonna Taylor’s killers

Davis on Sunday wore a shirt that called for the arrest of the police officers that killed Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky.

[jwplayer gdDHAtNR]

Terence Davis and the Toronto Raptors on Sunday kicked off their second-round playoff matchup against the Boston Celtics and the rookie made a statement prior to the start of the series.

Davis entered the arena at the Wide World of Sports Complex wearing a shirt that called for the arrest of the police officers that killed Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky. Taylor, an unarmed 26-year-old Black woman, was shot and killed in her home by police officers Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison and Myles Cosgrove in March.

The police officers have not been charged in the killing of Taylor and only Hankison was terminated from the Louisville Metro Police Department in June. On Sunday, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron said his office received the ballistics report from the shooting and added that it was a critical piece to the investigation.

Athletes from the NBA and WNBA have used their platform this season to draw attention to the killing of Taylor. Davis previously used a media session with reporters to call for the arrests of the police officers involved in the shooting, saying he and his teammates stand united in raising awareness for social injustice.

Players in the NBA mandated that the NBA and NBPA work together to help influence change in the United States after the Milwaukee Bucks protested playing Game 5 against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. The Bucks opted against playing following the shooting of Jacob Blake, an unarmed 29-year-old Black man in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The NBA and the players agreed to several conditions of resuming the season, including turning each NBA arena into a polling place in the general election. The two sides also created a coalition to help increase access to voting, promoting civic engagement and advocating for meaningful police and criminal justice reform.
