Should the San Antonio Spurs conisder signing John Wall?

Should the San Antonio Spurs reach out to John Wall’s agent about joining the team?

Should the San Antonio Spurs reach out to John Wall‘s agent about joining the team? The former five-time All-Star is at the top of Sports Illustrated NBA analyst Ben Stinar’s wish list for San Antonio. It’s no secret that the Spurs could use a real floor general, and Stinar believes the former Washington Wizards star still has something to offer San Antonio.

Per the SI analyst, Wall “is currently a free agent that could likely be signed for a veteran’s minimum deal (or even a ten-day contract)” and Wall, “who has a career average of 8.9 assists per contest, would make the game even easier for (Victor) Wembanyama.”

The former top pick of the 2010 NBA draft might not be getting many calls from clubs with a hope to win games. But for now Wemby and Co. simply need a player with the sort of experience and floor vision to unlock the French big man on the court.

While we would aim for a player who can still grow some with San Antonio, for a low-risk, decent reward gamble, we can get behind a flier on John Wall.

Grizzlies to cut Bismack Biyombo; would he make sense as a Boston Celtic?

Biyombo has shown he still has some rim protection and rebounding in the tank, and the Celtics could use some additional depth in their frontcourt.

The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly waiving veteran big man Bismack Biyombo to make room for another player per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Would the Congolese center make sense for the Boston Celtics to consider signing? So far this season, Biyombo has shown he still has some rim protection and rebounding in the tank, and the Celtics could use some additional depth in their frontcourt.

On the negative side, such a move might limit the opportunity for two way Boston big man Neemias Queta to get a full roster spot by season’s end, and Biyombo is a very poor free throw shooter who can be targeted as a defender. But the 12-season vet would not have the ball in his hands often, fits in the Celtics’ drop coverage and zone schema, and has real playoff experience.

His 5.2 points, 6.4 boards, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game would take a dip in Boston with a bit less time for him to play most nights, but the biggest obstacle out there for ending up on the Celtics roster may be timing.

Boston will likely want to keep an open roster spot as they get closer to the trade deadline for future flexibility, and while there is a need for frontcourt depth, Boston has a greater need for wing depth.

Add in that the Lubumbashi native can likely find as big a role elsewhere, and it seems unlikely Biyombo will be a Celtic this season, but the fit is not a terrible one.

Celtics Lab 234: Why Boston is probably not making big moves at the deadline with Yossi Gozlan

Boston probably won’t stand pat, but isn’t likely to make major moves – so what IS on the table?

With the Boston Celtics rolling and their path to hanging Banner 18 looking more possible than it has in many years, you can’t fault fans of the storied ball club for hoping for a reunion with former Boston big men Daniel Theis or Kelly Olynyk. Or failing that, team president Brad Stevens getting a deal done for rumored target Isaiah Stewart to fortify the team’s frontcourt.

Even fairly modest trades like these are probably not in the cards for the Celtics this season, who can’t follow through with an offer that makes sense given the exigencies of the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement or the team’s current structure.

But the team will almost certainly make at least a few lesser moves to get better ahead of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline in Early February, so the hosts of CLNS Media’s “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Cap Sheets‘ Yossi Gozlan to try to project what it is Boston actually will end up doing.

We also get into why those fun but unrealistic deals bringing back Celtics alumni or Beef Stew are unlikely or impossible, and get caught up on the last Boston news of 2023.

Should the Celtics consider signing Kenneth Faried to their open roster spot?

The Manimal is planning an NBA comeback, and will ‘work his tail off’ to do it; does Boston make sense?

From the way the Boston Celtics have been playing over the first four games of the 2023-24 NBA season, it would be hard to identify an obvious area in need of improvement with the Celtics now the owners of the best record in the East and tied for the best in the league with the Dallas Mavericks at 4-0.

But Boston has another 78 games to play to finish the regular season and at least another 16 after that (and probably a lot more) if they want to win a title. So with their big man depth still a bit thin, adding a third frontcourt player able to not only absorb minutes to keep Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford healthy and spry for the postseason but also able to fill in for them in the playoffs if one or both is unavailable seems the last weak link in the roster left for the front office to address.

There has been no shortage of speculation about how the Celtics might address such an issue, with the latest popular candidate being former Celtics center Daniel Theis, currently languishing on the bench of the Indiana Pacers after a strong showing in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Why the Boston Celtics might sign free agent Reggie Bullock

How could Bullock could end up in Boston and how might such a move connect to the Jrue Holiday trade?

The San Antonio Spurs bought out veteran wing Reggie Bullock on this past Saturday after the Dallas Mavericks sent him to San Antonio in the trade with the Boston Celtics that allowed the Mavs to sign former Celtics reserve forward Grant Williams.

Boston couldn’t bring back Bullock’s $10-million deal in that trade, but can now sign him for the veteran’s minimum as The Athletic’s Shams Charania points toward numerous title contenders signing the 3-and-D shooter. How could Bullock could end up in Boston and how might such a move connect to the Jrue Holiday trade the Celtics made on Sunday?

Host of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast Bobby Manning tried his hand at answering all of the above in the video embedded below.

Who are the best players the Boston Celtics could use to fill their final open roster spot?

Some of these options are currently unrestricted free agents, others are players on teams that need to make some cuts.

Who are the best players the Boston Celtics could use to fill their final open roster spot?

If the Celtics are indeed unable to bring back veteran big man Blake Griffin, they could look at players such as Usman Garuba, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Aaron Wiggins, Kelly Oubre, Cam Payne, Charles Bassey, Kenneth Faried, Austin Rivers, Terence Davis, TJ Warren, Bismack Biyombo, Javonte Green and others.

Some of these options are unrestricted free agents, others are players on teams that need to make cuts. Regardless of their current situation, the Celtics will likely add a player to fill their final open roster spot at some point during the season if not immediately.

The hosts of the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast took a deep dive into the available options still on the board.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say about who Boston could bring onto the team.

Could a TJ Warren signing make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Has the veteran forward recovered fully? Will he find his shot again in the season to come?

Could a TJ Warren signing make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Warren is an experienced NBA player known for his time with the Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns and the Indiana Pacers in recent seasons. He overcame a serious foot injury that kept him sidelined for nearly two full seasons.

Has the veteran forward recovered fully? Will he find his shot again in the season to come? What else can he offer a team as a deep rotation option with the upside of being able to slide into a bigger role when the situation calls for it? These are the questions in need of an answer before Boston or other ball clubs can make a decision on whether to sign Warren this season.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast talked it over on a recent episode.

Would it make sense for the Boston Celtics to sign Michael Carter-Williams?

A case can be made that the team needs more ball handling in the absence of veteran point guard Marcus Smart.

Would it make sense for the Boston Celtics to add the 2014 NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams to the team ahead of the 2023-24 season?

The Celtics have reportedly been focusing on wing depth options in recent weeks to fill one of their two regular and one two-way roster slots, but a case can be made that the team needs more ball handling in the absence of veteran point guard Marcus Smart.

Such a case is made by Sports Illustrated’s Ben Stinar, who recently pointed to Carter-Williams as “a capable facilitator”  for Boston to sign for that reason.

“Last year, the former Syracuse star played in four games for the Orlando Magic and averaged 4.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per contest while shooting 42.9% from the field and 33.3% from the 3-point range,” writes Stinar.

While Carter-Williams’ per-36 minutes stats do hint at a solid facilitator in the minutes that the onetime Syracuse star was on the court, his lack of playing time for a rebuilding club like the Magic plus frequent injury issues do not scream that this is a match made in heaven. Neither does his relatively poor shooting numbers.

The possibility of it working out as a potential deep bench option is not out of the question, but a player with a more established track record such as Austin Rivers, Kendrick Nunn, Ish Smith or Terence Davis would all be safer options for Boston to pursue.

Would Glenn Robinson III be a good fit for the Boston Celtics?

Robinson’s shooting, especially at the rate from his time with the Golden State Warriors, could be a helpful deep bench option.

Despite veteran wing Glenn Robinson III’s absence from the NBA since 2021, the Boston Celtics are intrigued by his potential, inviting him in for a workout according to SNY’s Ian Begley.

Robinson’s shooting, especially at the rate from his time with the Golden State Warriors, could be a helpful deep bench option and he is also a solid if unremarkable defender. The former Dubs reserve shooting guard will have to beat out the likes of TJ Warren, Louis King, and Lamar Stevens to secure a roster spot with the Celtics, however, as word has surfaced that Boston has worked out several other wings for the team as well.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast sat down to talk over their thoughts in which free agent Boston ought to sign.

Would TJ Warren or Lamar Stevens make more sense for the Boston Celtics to sign to one of their open roster spots?

What are the pros and cons of bringing on each player?

Would TJ Warren or Lamar Stevens make more sense for the Boston Celtics to sign to one of their open roster spots? What are the pros and cons of bringing on each player and how could they fit into the team’s plans for the 2023-24 season and beyond?

On one hand, Warren is a considerably more experienced player who has a baseline of offense to offer the Celtics as a seasoned bench player, but he also has a fairly serious injury history on a team increasingly populated by players with similar issues. On the other hand, Stevens is a younger player who does not have much in the way of offensive game that would primarily add value to the roster on the other end of the court.

The host of the “Locked On Celtics” podcast John Karalis weighed in on which of the two forwards would be the better fit in his estimation.
