Bears QB Tyson Bagent nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Week

Fans can vote for Tyson Bagent to win the Week 7 Rookie of the Week award.

The good vibes keep coming for Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent. The Bears defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 30-12 in Bagent’s first NFL start as he filled in for Justin Fields, who is dealing with an injured thumb on his throwing hand. Bagent went 21-of-29 for 162 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers to keep the offense moving in front of dozens of friends and family. He’s the first Bears rookie quarterback to win his debut start since Craig Krenzel back in 2004.

His efforts were rewarded after the win with a game ball and now with the chance to win Pepsi® Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week. Bagent is one of six players to be nominated for the Week 7 award, along with Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, New York Giants cornerback Deonte Banks, and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison.

Bagent is the second Bears player to be nominated for the award this year, joining rookie cornerback Terell Smith after his contributions in Week 5 against the Washington Commanders. Fans can vote for Bagent by visiting nfl.com/voting/rookies/.

Raiders vs Bears final injury report: Justin Fields, Jimmy Garoppolo both OUT

Raiders and Bears will both take the field Sunday without their starting quarterback

Sunday the Raiders and Bears will meet in Chicago, both without their starting quarterbacks.

Both teams will also be shorthanded at defensive back. The Raiders will be without cornerbacks Nate Hobbs and Jakorian Bennett while the Bears will be without safety Eddie Jackson and cornerback Terell Smith.

In total, the Bears have five players officially OUT for the game. Others include OL Nate Davis and RB Roschon Johnson.

Questionable for the Bears are OL Dan Feeney, OL Darnell Wright, and DB Jaquan Brisker.

Bears CB Terell Smith nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Week

Rookie CB Terell Smith impressed in the Bears’ Week 5 win vs. Commanders.

The Chicago Bears recorded their first win of the season against the Washington Commanders last Thursday night, where there were a number of young players who contributed.

That included fifth-round rookie cornerback Terell Smith, who saw extended action in place of injured starter Jaylon Johnson, who was out with a hamstring injury.

Smith rose to the occasion, playing a key role in the victory. He totaled six tackles and both forced and recovered a fumble. He was also among Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded rookies with a 77.3 grade.

So it’s no surprise to see Smith among the players nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Week, alongside Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, Dolphins running back De’Von Achane, Broncos running back Jaleel McLaughlin, Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, Colts receiver Josh Downs.

Johnson is expected to return to the lineup this week against the Minnesota Vikings, but it’s fair to wonder if Smith could perhaps push fellow rookie Tyrique Stevenson for reps this season.

It certainly appears that the Bears have a potential stud in Smith moving forward.

Chicago Bears Stock Exchange: Who’s up, who’s down entering Week 6?

The Bears are coming off their first win of the year thanks to many players who are seeing their stock begin to rise.

For the first time in nearly a year, the Chicago Bears began a week of practice, coming off a regular-season win after they dismantled the Washington Commanders 40-20 on Thursday Night Football. The Bears were in control for most of the game as they got off to a fast start thanks to quarterback Justin Fields and wide receiver DJ Moore and never looked back. The score at halftime was 27-3, and though a late surge from the Commanders made things a bit more interesting late in the game, they were never a true threat to mount a comeback.

This was a team victory thanks to many different contributors on both sides of the ball, which means plenty of Bears players are seeing their stock rise as they get ready for a divisional matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Here is the latest look at the Chicago Bears Stock Exchange heading into Week 6.

10 Bears players to watch on Saturday vs. Colts

Here are 10 Bears players to keep an eye on when they take on the Indianapolis Colts this weekend.

Preseason game No. 2 is on deck for the Chicago Bears this weekend as they prepare to take on the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. This week’s squad will look a bit different than the one that took down the Tennessee Titans 23-17 last weekend, however.

According to head coach Matt Eberflus, quarterback Justin Fields and a few other select starters will not suit up,  The Bears coaching staff believes Fields and others put in plenty of work this week when they held two joint practices with the Colts at their facilities in Westfield, IN.

Even with some of the starters out, there are still many intriguing players worth watching as the Bears look to solidify their team. Many backups and reserves will receive more playing time as a result of Eberflus’ decision, which will help determine the back half of the roster as the regular season inches closer.

Here are 10 players we’ll be watching when the Bears and Colts kick off on Saturday evening at 6 pm CT.

Bears rookie report card from preseason win vs. Titans

How did the Bears 2023 rookie class look during Saturday’s game? Here’s our report card.

When the Chicago Bears took the field against the Tennessee Titans for their first preseason game, it was the first chance many fans were able to see the team’s 2023 rookie class in action. After nearly four months since general manager Ryan Poles made his 10 selections, the rookies took their first test to show their progress at the professional level.

Though veteran stars Justin Fields and D.J. Moore stole the show early on in the Bears’ 23-17 win, it was the rookies who had the majority of the playing time as the game progressed. Some of them shined in their debuts, while others could have gotten off to better starts. Here is our report card of the team’s rookie class after their preseason debut.

Bears training camp: Tracking rookie progress after first week

We’re taking a closer look at the 2023 Bears rookie draft class to see how they’ve performed in training camp up to this point.

Training camp is in full swing for the Chicago Bears, who have now completed seven days of practice since reporting to Halas Hall last week. Early on, the offense stole the show with big plays in the passing game, but the defense caught up once pads came on the last couple of days.

Players like Justin Fields, D.J. Moore, Chase Claypool, Tremaine Edmunds, Jaquan Brisker, and Kyler Gordon have stolen the headlines at one time or another after each practice, but what about the Bears rookie class? General manager Ryan Poles selected 10 players in total earlier this spring, most notably tackle Darnell Wright with the No. 10 overall pick.

Wright has been a starter at right tackle from Day 1 and he’s been one of the more intriguing players as camp has gotten underway. There’s more to the rookies than just the first-round pick, though. Here’s an overview of each Bears rookie performance up to this point in camp.

Bears have ‘open’ competition at cornerback with rookies Tyrique Stevenson, Terell Smith

Bears rookies Tyrique Stevenson and Terell Smith are battling it out for the starting outside cornerback job.

One of the more intriguing position battles to emerge from Bears training camp is between rookies Tyrique Stevenson and Terell Smith, who are battling for the CB2 role opposite Jaylon Johnson.

The pair have been splitting first team reps, and that continued during Tuesday’s padded workout. It’s been evident that a competition was brewing, and Stevenson all but confirmed it.

Stevenson said Bears coaches “made it real clear there’s going to be a competition” between him and Smith for the starting outside cornerback spot. And both continue to make plays during practice, including during Tuesday’s padded practice.

Stevenson broke up a pass intended for tight end Robert Tonyan, as well as locked up receiver DJ Moore during the 1-on-1 red zone period. Smith tipped a Justin Fields pass intended for receiver Chase Claypool, which was intercepted by safety Eddie Jackson.

“There’s definitely an opportunity open and [Smith] is doing his best to be able to be the CB2 and I’m doing my best,” Stevenson said, “so there’s no reason for me to go upstairs and ask questions. I feel like preparation and going out there and battling and competing is just going to bring the best man out on top for the job.”

While the pair remain friendly, there’s a competitive edge as they understand what’s at stake.

“It’s a competition until the end,” Stevenson said. “We both got drafted. For opportunities, it really doesn’t matter where you got drafted at. He comes in every day with his head down willing to work, just as I am.

“I’ve had a couple slip-ups as a rookie. They didn’t tell me anything, but they made it real clear that it’s going to be a competition. I didn’t earn anything. I have no stripes in the league. Every day we come in we smile at each other. We also know that we’re both working for the same position.”

WATCH: Bears rookies Tyler Scott and Terell Smith battle in camp drills

The Bears rookies had an intense battle during 1-on-1 drills that was captured on video.

You know the old saying “iron sharpens iron” right? In the case of the Chicago Bears, that could not have been more accurate between a pair of rookies during Monday’s training camp practice up at Halas Hall.

During Monday’s practice as players began going through 1-on-1 drills, rookies Tyler Scott and Terell Smith had an intense battle that was caught on video by Clay Harbor.

Scott, the receiver was jammed immediately off the snap by the cornerback Smith and had to fight to regain his route. Smith was draped all over Scott until the receiver planted his foot on an inside move to lose him before whipping back to the outside to make the catch. Scott eventually got the better of Smith but it took a while for that to happen.

The two rookies have been pleasant surprises to start camp. Scott, a fourth-round pick out of Cincinnati, has displayed impressive bursts of speed and quickness both at receiver and on special teams. He’s blown past defenders on deep routes and has the ability to shake them in space. On the other side, Smith was drafted in the fifth round out of Minnesota and is a lengthy cornerback. He’s already turning heads in camp and has seen plenty of reps with the starting defense. Plays like the one with Scott are a reason why.

Time will tell whether or not Scott and/or Smith continue their rise and become meaningful contributors when the regular season gets underway. But both players showed why the Bears are so high on them this early in camp.
