VFL Tennys Sandgren falls in tournament qualifying match

Former Vol Tennys Sandgren loses to Max Purcell in Phoenix.

Former University of Tennessee men’s tennis player Tennys Sandgren failed to qualify for the Challenger Phoenix Tournament.

Sandgren lost a qualifier to fellow American Max Purcell in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 Tuesday.

Sandgren, who played for the Volunteers between 2010-11, won a qualifying match on Monday, defeating Gonzalo Escobar, 7-5, 7-6.

Sandgren is a native of Gallatin, Tennessee. As a freshman for Tennessee, he went 10-0 in Southeastern Conference matches and helped the Vols win the regular season conference title and the SEC Tournament championship.

The Vols also reached the national championship match in 2010.

As a sophomore, Sandgren reached the NCAA singles championship match where he lost to teammate and doubles partner Rhyne Williams in three sets.

Sandgren was 60-12 in singles competition for the Vols.

Former University of Tennessee tennis player Tennys Sandgren and doubles partner Austin Krajicek lost in a Tokyo Olympics semifinal match Thursday.

Team USA’s duo fell in straight sets to the Croatian tandem of Mate Pavic and Nicola Mektic, 6-4,6-4.

Sandgren and Krajieck will play for the bronze medal on Friday, facing New Zealand’s Michael Venus and Marcus Daniell.

In the semifinals, Team USA’s doubles team had eight service errors and committed three double faults.

Sangren and Krajicek struggled on their first serves, converting just 35 of their 51 attempts. The American duo failed to break Pavic and Mektic in the match. Sandgren and Krajicek had their serve broken twice in the Croatian duo’s eight attempts.

Former Volunteer standout Tennys Sandgren and his doubles partner, Austin Krajicek, advanced to the semifinals of the Olympic tennis tournament with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Germany’s tandem of Alexander Zver and Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinals.

Team USA’s duo will face Croatia’s tandem of Mate Pavic and Nicola Mektic on Thursday.

In the quarterfinals, Krajicek and Sandgren combined for four service aces, 36 of their 41 first service points and converted 23-of -24 points on their second serve. They also recorded only seven unforced errors.

Tennys Sandgren was selected to represent the United States in both the singles and doubles tennis tournament.

Sandgren and his doubles partner Austin Krajicek have advanced to the tournament quarterfinals. They will face Germany’s tandem of Jan-Lennard Struff and Alexander Zverev at 10 p.m. EDT on Tuesday.

Zverev eliminated Sandgren in the second round at Wimbledon in men’s singles competition.

Sandgren and Krajicek advanced to the Olympic quarterfinals with a victory over Slovakia’s doubles team of Lukas Klein and Filip Polasek, 7-6 (2), 3-6.

Team USA’s doubles team won its opening-round match over Australia’s tandem John Peers and Max Purcell.

Sandgren and Krajicek prevailed in their first-round match 6-3, 7-5 (6).

Sandgren was eliminated in his first-round singles match in Tokyo as he lost to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 on Saturday.

Former University of Tennessee tennis player Tennys Sandgren has been chosen to represent the United States.

He was selected by the United States Tennis Association to compete in the Olympics.

Sandgren defeated Norbert Gombos, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, in the first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

He was eliminated in the second round at Wimbledon on Thursday, losing in straight sets to fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3.

Sandgren, who starred at Tennessee for two seasons before turning professional in 2011, will also compete in men’s doubles with partner Austin Krajicek during the Olympics.

The duo made an early exit from Wimbledon, losing an opening-round match in straight sets to Alexei Popyrin and Lloyd Harris, 6-4,7-6 (5), on Friday.

Sandgren and doubles partner Austin Krajicek were ousted from the tournament when they lost to Alexei Popyrin and Lloyd Harris in straight sets. Popyrin and Harris prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (4) on Court 8 at the All England Club.

Sandgren, who won his first round singles match on Tuesday, was eliminated from singles competition by fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3.

Sandgren, a native of Gallatan, Tennessee, played at Tennessee during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He was an All-America standout and All-Southeastern Conference performer during his time on Rocky Top.

He was 10-0 in singles play as a freshman and went 37-6 during his sophomore campaign before turning pro in 2011.

He was defeated in straight sets.

Sandgren, who picked up a first round win Tuesday, fell to Alexander Zverev, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3, on Court No. 2 at the All England Club.

The former Vol served eight aces, but had six double faults in the match. He had his serve broken five times as Zverev converted 5-of-10 break points.

Sandgren had one break point and did not win it.

He advanced to the second round after defeating Norbert Gombos, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3.

Sandgren is set to compete in doubles with partner Austin Krajicek. The duo will face Alexei Popyrin and Lloyd Harris in a second round match on Friday.
