VFL Tennys Sandgren falls at Australian Open

Recapping Tennys Sandgren’s first-round loss in the Australian Open.

Former University of Tennessee tennis player Tennys Sandgren had a short stay at the Australian Open.

He was eliminated in the opening round of the first major this season, losing to No. 21 seed Alex de Minaur.

Sandgren lost in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1, in Melbourne.

The former Vol had 12 aces and five double faults in the match.

Sandgren played for the Volunteers between 2010-11 before turning pro.

As a freshman for the Vols, Sandgren went 10-0 in Southeastern Conference singles matches.

He entered the 2021 Australian Open as the No. 50 player in the world.

As a sophomore on Rocky Top, he had an overall record of 37-6, going 10-1 in the SEC.

Sandgren appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2011. He lost in the semifinals to UT teammate and doubles partner Rhyne Williams in three sets.

Sandgren went 60-12 for the Vols and left Tennessee with the highest winning percentage in school history.
