A look at SEC baseball home run leaders after Week 3.

No. 8 Tennessee (11-1) enters Week 3 of the college baseball season.

The Vols will host Kansas State on Tuesday and Southern Indiana on Wednesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Week 4. Both contests are slated for 6 p.m. EST and can be watched on SEC Network+.

Tennessee will also host Illinois, Friday-Sunday, for a three-game series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Friday’s series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST, while Saturday and Sunday’s contests are slated for 1 p.m. EST. All games in the series can be watched on SEC Network+.

Two former Vols named to PFWA All-Rookie Team

Two former Vols named to PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Two former Vols were named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team Tuesday.

Darnell Wright and Byron Young were honored and Tennessee was one of seven schools to have multiple players named to the 2023 PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Wright, who plays for Chicago, was the SEC’s highest drafted offensive lineman in 2023 (No. 10 overall). He started 17 games for the Bears and played 99.6 percent of the team’s snaps, the most of any Chicago player.

Young, an edge rusher for the Los Angeles Rams, was drafted in the third round (No. 77 overall).

He helped Los Angeles reach the playoffs during his rookie campaign, totaling 61 total tackles, eight sacks, 19 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Young was second among all NFL rookies in sacks.

No. 23 Tennessee (8-4, 4-4 SEC) will play No. 17 Iowa (10-3, 7-2 Big Ten) in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, 2024.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. ABC will televise the postseason matchup.

Josh Heupel coached against Iowa in one other bowl game.

Heupel was co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Oklahoma in 2011. The Sooners defeated Iowa, 31-14, in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 30, 2011 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.

Blake Bell led Oklahoma with 51 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He was named offensive MVP.

Oklahoma cornerback Jamell Fleming was named the game’s defensive MVP. He recorded one interception in the contest against the Hawkeyes.

Sooners’ quarterback Landry Jones completed 16-of-25 passing attempts for 161 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Lady Vols fall to Middle Tennessee State, suffers third consecutive loss.

Middle Tennessee State (7-3) defeated Tennessee (4-5), 73-62, Wednesday at Propst Arena and Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Wednesday’s loss is the third consecutive for the Lady Vols, who fell out of the top 25 after losing at home to Ohio State on Sunday.

The Blue Raiders led, 37-33, at halftime after being tied, 20-20, at the end of the first quarter.

Tennessee’s Karoline Striplin scored a game-high 29 points. She was the only player to score 10-plus pints in the contest for Tennessee.

Striplin also recorded three rebounds and two assists.

Jasmine Powell recorded nine points, five rebounds and four assists, while Destinee Wells finished with eight points and three assists.

Jallynn Gregory scored 22 points to lead the Blue Raiders. She also totaled five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

The 2024 prospect is from Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tennessee. He played wide receiver and defensive back.

Carter committed to Tennessee on June 17.

Alvin Kamara by the numbers against Chicago

A look at former Vol Alvin Kamara’s performance Sunday against Chicago.

New Orleans (5-4) defeated Chicago (2-7), 24-17, Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Former Vol Alvin Kamara totaled 26 rushing yards on nine rushing attempts and four receptions for 44 yards against Chicago.

Kamara played for Tennessee from 2015-16 under head coach Butch Jones. He transferred to Tennessee from Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Kamara was a third-round selection by New Orleans in the 2017 NFL draft (No. 67 overall).

He was named 2017 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, a five-time Pro Bowl selection and a two-time second-team All-Pro.

New Orleans next plays on Sunday at Minnesota. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. EST at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Joshua Dobbs leads game-winning drive in Minnesota debut

Former Vol Joshua Dobbs leads game-winning drive in Minnesota debut.

Minnesota (5-4) defeated Atlanta, 31-28, Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia during Week 9.

Dobbs, who was traded from Arizona to the Vikings at the Oct. 31 deadline, led the first game-winning drive of his NFL career, culminating it with a touchdown pass to Brandon Powell with 22 seconds remaining in the game.

The former Vol completed 20-of-30 passing attempts for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He was also Minnesota’s leading rusher, totaling 66 rushing yards and one touchdown on seven attempts.

Dobbs tied the game, 21-21, in the third quarter with a completed pass on a two-point conversion.

He also lost two fumbles and was sacked for a safety after entering the contest when starter Jaren Hall went out due to injury.

Dobbs played quarterback at Tennessee from 2013-16 under head coach  Butch Jones.

He totaled 7,138 passing yards, 53 passing touchdowns, 2,160 rushing yards, 32 rushing rushing touchdowns, 62 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns for the Vols.

Arizona traded a 2024 fifth-round draft pick to Cleveland for Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round draft selection ahead of the 2023 season.

Minnesota traded a conditional 2024 sixth-round draft pick and a seventh-round 2024 draft pick to the Cardinals for Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round draft pick.

Minnesota next plays Sunday when it hosts New Orleans. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Tennessee mourns passing of Tasha Butts

Tennessee mourns the passing of LVFL Tasha Butts.

Tasha Butts, former Tennessee basketball player and Georgetown women’s basketball head coach, passed away after a battle with cancer.

Butts was 41. Georgetown announced her passing on Monday.

“Our program is heartbroken to lose a member of our Lady Vol sisterhood much, much too soon,” Tennessee head coach Kellie Harper said. “Tasha was the type of person who connected with people everywhere she went. She had such a positive impact not only on our Tennessee family but on women’s basketball as a whole. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of her family and friends during this extremely difficult time.”

Butts, who was named Georgetown’s head coach in April, played at Tennessee from 2000-04 for head coach Pat Summitt. She appeared in 141 career games for the Lady Vols.

Texas A&M (8-6-3, 4-3-2 SEC) defeated Tennessee (7-5-4, 2-4-3 SEC), 4-3, Sunday at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Jordan Fusco recorded at a hat trick against the Aggies.

Tennessee led, 1-0, after Fusco scored in fifth minute. Macaira Midgley was credited with an assist on the first goal of the match.

Texas A&M scored the next two goals. Jazmine Wilkinson scored an unassisted goal in the ninth minute to tie the game, 1-1. Sydney Becerra gave Texas A&M a lead in the 14th minute off an assist from Mia Pante.

The Lady Vols tied the game after halftime. Fusco scored in the 46th minute and was assisted by Maria Nelson.

Fusco gave the Lady Vols a 3-2 lead after scoring in the 48th minute.

Wilkinson, who had a hat trick for the Aggies, tied the match, 3-3, in the 77th minute. She scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute.

Lady Vols extend win streak to seven games

Despite 27 attacking errors, Tennessee defeats Bulldogs in Starkville.

No. 12 Tennessee (12-1, 3-0 SEC) defeated Mississippi State (8-5, 1-2 SEC) on Friday at Newell-Grissom Building in Starkville, Mississippi.

The Lady Vols recorded its seventh consecutive victory during the regular-season, 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17.

Erykah Lovett (13 kills, 18 digs) and Caroline Kerr (43 assists, 13 digs) recorded double-doubles for Tennessee.

The Lady Vols totaled 27 attacking errors.

Lovett also had three assists and one block for Tennessee. Kerr, a redshirt freshman setter, recorded two blocks and one ace.

Jenaisya Moore led the Lady Vols’ attack with 18 kills. Morgahn Fingall finished with 12 kills and three aces.

Tennessee will next play on Sunday at Ole Miss. First serve is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EDT in Oxford, Mississippi.
