USF vs Temple Game Preview

Why USF Will Win

The USF running game should rumble.

The passing game has stepped up was the offense keeps on improving, but it’s the ground attack that should be able to take over early on with a decent style that averages five yards per carry with plenty of gashing runs.

Temple’s defense has been able to hold up – for the most part – but teams that commit to the ground game can bust through and succeed. As long as USF runs at least 35 times, it’ll have a shot.

Temple doesn’t have the scoring pop to keep up, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Temple Will Win

The Temple defense is fine.

It might have problems at times against he run, but it’s the best in the AAC at coming up with third down stops, the pass defense is among the best in America, and it all starts with a pass rush that will go off.

USF’s defense can’t stop much of anything. It’s the second-worst in America – yay Charlotte – with huge problems against the run. Temple might not have enough happening on offense, but the passing attack will be good for at least 200 yards.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

As good as the Temple defense is, it doesn’t take the ball away.

USF’s offense will be a bit more balanced, the ground game will work, and the Temple offense will stall just enough to keep up.

Finally, the Bulls will break through after a slew of close calls.

Temple vs Navy Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The defense is fantastic at coming up with third down stops.

No, the run D isn’t amazing, but overall the Owls have a problem against teams that can throw enough to make open things up for everything else. Teams that weren’t able to throw – Rutgers, UMass, Lafayette – also didn’t run for a score.

Navy might not be able to throw outside of a few plays here and there, but there won’t be a whole slew of worries about the air show. Temple should be able to hold up against the run by selling out to keep the Midshipmen from getting to the outside, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Navy Will Win

It’s not like the Temple offense will put up a ton of points and big plays.

The Owl offense has managed to get past 16 points just twice so far – it was the only two wins against Lafayette and UMass. Navy might not have an amazing defense, but it mostly has issues against teams that can throw well and that’s not Temple.

The Owls don’t control the clock for long periods of time, and Navy being Navy will have it for at least 35 minutes.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Temple’s defense rise up enough to force Navy into several third and longs?

For some stretches, yes, but the Midshipmen will go on just enough good scoring marches to get up early, and they’ll take the air out of the ball in the second half.

Temple won’t be able to take advantage of its chances to take over the game – there won’t be enough of them.

Tulsa vs Temple Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

Just score.

Tulsa has a whole lot of issues, but it has a high-powered passing offense and enough firepower to at least throw a few touchdowns on the board.

Would it be nice if this was the type of attack that scored 40ish without breathing hard? Of course, but that’s not necessary.

Temple doesn’t score.

It doesn’t move the chains, it doesn’t have a good enough running game, and it turns it over too much. It put up 28 in the win over UMass, but it hasn’t scores more than 14 against any other FBS team.

Combine that with being -10 in turnover margin, and there’s a problem.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Temple Will Win

What Temple does do right is attack, attack, attack.

The pass rush continues to be great, and that’s just enough be a bother against teams that can’t hold up on the line. Memphis gave up five sacks, UMass allowed four, Rutgers two, and the eight against Lafayette mattered.

Tulsa is one of the worst teams in America in pass protection. It’s going to be bothered all game long by LB Layton Jordan and the front seven that keeps on coming.

Here’s the real problem …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Padres-Phillies will be going on in the city at the exact same time as this. Let’s just say this won’t be the most tuned-in of football atmospheres.

Temple is coming off giving up 70 to UCF. Tulsa is coming off giving up 53 to Navy. Something has to give, and it’ll be the Owl defense just a wee bit.

Tulsa can score a little bit. Temple will score more than it usually does, but it won’t be consistent enough in the second half.

UCF vs Temple Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

Every once in a while a struggling team with a new head coach who’s looking to create an identity can find something to build off of.

Temple just happens to be amazing at generating sacks and coming up with third down stops.

While that might seem a bit small, it’s a big deal to rely on while the other parts are improving.

The D is third in the nation allowing teams to convert just 24% of the time, that stars with a run defense that’s stopping just about everyone cold, and that’s all a part of a pass rush that’s tied for the best in the nation.

Temple’s defense has kept games alive. It’s allowing an average of under 17 points per game, the defense leads the American Athletic Conference, and the game shouldn’t get out of hand, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why UCF Will Win

Temple hasn’t faced any sort of an offense like this.

Memphis has an offense, and it went for 331 yards in last week’s 24-3 win. Duke rolled up 500 yards in the 30-0 loss, but that’s been about it.

UCF is ripping through everyone on the ground, averaging 253 yards per game with two efforts of over 320 yards in two of the last three games.

The Knights might not be able to do that, but as long as it gets up early everything else should be fine.

Temple’s offense is sputtering. It’s among the least efficient in the nation in passing, there’s no running game, and the only scoring outbursts came against Lafayette and UMass.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UCF will get up early and coast from there. The defense might not be a rock – who gives up over 300 passing yards to Georgia Tech? – but it won’t have any issues to deal with.

Temple will throw for over 200 yards, but the ground game won’t go anywhere, it’ll turn it over at least twice, and the run defense get hit harder than it has all year.

Memphis vs Temple Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The passing game is starting to come together.

It isn’t explosive, and it isn’t anything amazing, and it hasn’t put it together against anyone great, but take the 200+ yards per game over the last three. The emergence of freshman EJ Warner has helped, but it’s the offense as a whole that’s starting to improve.

The O line is doing a great job in pass protection, the other side is strong on third downs, and the pass rush has been among the best in the country so far.

The Memphis offensive line has been a bit iffy and should be under pressure. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Memphis Will Win

The Owl running game isn’t working against anyone halfway decent. The O line can pass protect, but it’s not getting any semblance of a push.

The bigger Temple problem for Temple is turnover margin. The D forced its first takeaways of the season against UMass, and the other side has given it away ten times in four games.

Memphis isn’t screwing up. It has a far, far more effective all-around offense, and it only turned the ball over twice.

The Tigers will likely be +2 in turnover margin, and they probably won’t need it because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The offense has the balance to keep everything moving.

Duke is the only team Temple has faced that can throw a bit, and it got ugly. Memphis won’t have to wing it around, but it’ll get a few deep shots, the ground game will balance things out, and the defense will get by.

Temple will get a few good drives and points, but it won’t keep up.

Could a loss to the Saints end Matt Rhule’s run with the Panthers?

A loss to the Saints on Sunday would put Matt Rhule at 0-3 to start his third season, with a 10-game losing streak stretching back to last November. Could that do him in?

Are we witnessing the final weeks of the Matt Rhule regime? The embattled Carolina Panthers head coach has struggled to find on-field success since being hired back in 2020, at times feuding with his former offensive coordinator Joe Brady and local media in Carolina. Speculation is already swirling about his interest in returning to college as Nebraska’s next coach, replacing Scott Frost. His Panthers team has finished third and fourth in the division standings in the last two years, and now they’re 0-2 with the New Orleans Saints coming to town. Could another loss do him in?

Rhule’s team won five games in his first year on the job, which was kind of a wash given all of the chaos surrounding the 2020 season. Teddy Bridgewater started 15 of those games, completing 340 of his 492 passes (69.2%) for 3,733 yards, scoring 15 touchdown passes against 11 interceptions (while also running 53 times for 279 yards and 5 touchdown carries). Bridgewater was sacked 31 times and committed 6 fumbles.

That wasn’t enough to keep Rhule from making a change, bringing in Sam Darnold as his new starter. Darnold started 11 games, completing 234 of his 406 attempts (59.9%) for 2,527 yards, scoring 9 touchdown passes while throwing 13 interceptions (and running 48 times to gain 222 yards, scoring 5 touchdowns on the ground). He fumbled 9 times and took 35 sacks. Carolina only won five games in Rhule’s season season.

Now they’re starting Baker Mayfield, who has completed 30 of his first 56 pass attempts (53.6%), scoring 2 touchdown passes and throwing 1 interception. He’s run 11 times, gaining 41 yards and scoring another touchdown, but he’s already taken 6 sacks going into Week 3. He hasn’t fumbled yet, though. But it’s really hard to look at those stat lines and come away thinking Rhule has downgraded at quarterback — twice.

The Panthers’ 2021 season ended with a seven-game losing streak, and it’s stretched into 2022 after they lost each of their first two games. Another defeat this Sunday to the Saints would make for a 10-game streak of losses (they haven’t won a game since Nov. 14, 2021), and it’s really tough to see someone surviving that. It would drop Rhule’s record as an NFL head coach to 10-25 overall, meaning he’d have lost as many games in a row as he’s won in total. It’s also how many consecutive losses it took the Raiders to fire Dennis Allen.

But it would be unusual for a team to fire its head coach this early in the season.  Allen experienced a similar rocky start with the Raiders but they waited until after Week 4 (back in 2014) to cut him loose. The Jaguars waited until mid-December to jettison Urban Meyer last year. Even the least successful head coaches tend to hang around until October. While it sure looks as if Rhule is on the hot seat, and college opportunities will be out there (he rose to prominence at Temple and Baylor before making the jump to the NFL), it would be kind of a stunner to see him dismissed just three weeks into the season. And that’s contingent on the Saints actually winning on Sunday. We’ve got to remember that the Panthers got the better of them in this same venue just last year.

UMass vs Temple Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

The running game has to get moving right away.

UMass doesn’t even pretend to have a passing game at this point – the 105 yards in the win over Stony Brook represents a season high – and there aren’t that many gashing runs. However, the Minutemen are able to bash out 188 yards per game, they do a good job of controlling the clock, and they should be able to keep the score low and in range throughout.

Temple’s offense isn’t good enough to consistently move the chains, there’s no real ground game, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Temple Will Win

The defense will have to win this.

In the first year under head coach Stan Drayton, the pass rush has stepped up in a big way. The line should stop the UMass offense before it gets going, and that should be enough to offset a rough attack that’s struggling to get going.

As long as the defense is coming up with around ten tackles for loss, it should be doing its job throughout.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Points will be hard to come by.

UMass got rocked by Tulane and Toledo, but it’s playing a defense its own size. It should be able to run enough to matter, but the Temple D will be better, there will be some semblance of a passing attack, and the home side will get through a low-scoring grind.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 3

Rutgers vs Temple Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The Owls got the first win in the Stan Drayton era, and now that they’re tuned up a bit following the 30-14 win over Lafayette.

The D has been fantastic so far on third downs – allowing just 16% of conversions over the first two games – and the O is working around a rotation of backs to find the right fit.

Rutgers isn’t going to come out winging it all around the yard, the offense isn’t anything amazing – destroying Wagner 66-7 just isn’t that big of a deal, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Rutgers Will Win

Zero. That’s how many turnovers Temple has forced so far.

Five. That’s how many the Rutgers D has generated, and now it gets to go after a Temple attack that fumbled it away three times in both of its games.

Lafayette was never going to do anything big on the Temple defense, but Duke was able to run well and threw for close to 330 yards.

The Rutgers run defense has been a brick wall allowing just 0.8 yards per carry – granted, Boston College and Wagner don’t/can’t run – and the Owls aren’t going to pound away.

As long as the Scarlet Knights can own the offensive line, then …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Photos from last time Notre Dame got knocked out of AP Top 25

This one didn’t sting quite as badly.

It’s been a while since we’ve had to think about Notre Dame not being in the AP Top 25. Yet that’s exactly what happened after a brutal 26-21 home loss to Marshall. The Irish had been in the AP Top 25 for 80 consecutive weeks, one of the longest active streaks in the country. To think of the last time a loss knocked the Irish out of that poll, you have to go back to their 2017 game against Georgia, which was a 20-19 decision.

To be fair, this defeat didn’t come for an Irish team with expectations that were absurdly high. They weren’t ranked to open the season, but they ascended to 24th after a blowout win over Temple in their first game. They wouldn’t be down for long as back-to-back road wins over Boston College and Michigan State right after put them right back in the poll. That’s where they would stay until the Herd shocked everybody this past weekend.

Here are some photos from the last time an Irish loss pushed them out of the rankings:

Temple vs Lafayette Game Preview

Why Lafayette Will Win

The Leopards are going to bring the defense.

The offensive side might not be anything special, but the secondary has been good for the last few years, the offense’s job is to not turn it over, and the goal is to keep the game low scoring and tight late.

They were able to get a touchdown against Sacred Heart last week, missed the extra point, and that’s all they needed in the 6-0 win. Meanwhile, Temple was awful in Stan Drayton’s debut, losing 30-0 to Duke with no passing game, less of a ground attack, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Temple Will Win

Lafayette gained a grand total of 113 yards with eight through the air against Sacred Heart.

The offense did nothing, it was 1-of-11 on third down tries, and as long as Temple doesn’t get hit with a slew of turnovers and mistakes, it should be fine.

For all of the problems against Duke, Temple was good against the run and was solid in the second half.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Temple can’t have any problems here.

It’s all a work in progress under Drayton, but there are just enough pieces there on defense to keep the Leopards from doing much of anything. This is the game to get the ground attack rolling.
