Temple Owls Preview 2022

It wasn’t all that long ago that Temple appeared to be a steady, winning program that was allowed to assume good records and bowl appearances.

But last year the team couldn’t score in the 3-9 season, and before that was an ugly 1-6 2020 without much of anything going right.

Rod Carey was a strong head coach at Northern Illinois, but he struggled in his three years. Before him, Geoff Collins had a winning record before going to Georgia Tech, Matt Rhule went 28-23 before going on to Baylor and then the Carolina Panthers, Steve Addazio had a winning record, and Al Golden turned around the impossible program before going off to Miami.

Now it’s Stan Drayton’s turn.

The first time head coach has been a whale of a running back coach at several levels over the years, and now he’s getting his shot to take the Temple program and shape it how he wants to.

It’s not going to be easy. He has to get the lines in place, but the skill parts are solid, he’ll make the running game great, and there aren’t any expectations for now.

But it really is possible to win at Temple. Drayton might just need a year or so to do it.

Temple Owls Preview 2022: Offense

The new coaching staff has to find something it can rely on. The Owls were 125th in the nation in total offense last year, couldn’t run, had no downfield passing game, and it failed to score more than 14 points in nine games and in any of the last seven games. On the plus side, there’s experience, and there are some new options to change things up fast.

Head coach Stan Drayton knows how to coach up running backs. That’s how he made his name as an NFL assistant, and making the ground game go will be Job One.

Sophomore Edward Haydee led the team with just 330 yards and three touchdowns last year – averaging under four yards per carry, but he’ll be fine with room to move. Darvon Hubbard is coming in from Texas A&M and Jakari Norwood is moving in from Illinois as part of a rotation.

The line has to be better at keeping defenses out of the backfield. Three starters are expected back, Peace Addo from Duke and James Faminu from Houston will push for time, and there’s enough size to blast away a bit.

Can the quarterback situation be settled fast? Former Georgia transfer D’Wan Mathis has a whole lot of talent, but he needs the line to give him time to work after an injury-plagued – but promising – season. Quincy Patterson is coming in from Virginia Tech to add another option to the mix.

The receiving corps should be a plus. Leading receivers Randle Jones and Jaden Blue are done, but Jose Barbon was second with 39 catches with 431 yards and two scores, and Amad Anderson added 24 grabs. This is one of the team’s deeper areas, helped by getting Ian Stewart from Michigan State.

Temple Owls Preview 2022: Defense

The defensive side has more ready-to-roll parts than the offensive side. Last year’s D fought the good fight. It didn’t generate a pass rush, but it was great at coming up with tackles for loss and ended up fifth in the nation in pass defense. The run defense had problems, but as long as the secondary can hold up again, the D will be okay.

Leading tacklers Amir Tyler is done at safety, but Alex Odom is a good-sized hitter who was second with 65 tackles, and there’s good depth to play around with at the position.

There weren’t a whole lot of picks, but the corner combination of Keyshawn Paul, Cameron Ruiz, and Elijah Clark has size and can hold up. South Carolina transfer Dominick Hill will be an instant factor.

The front three will be active. 285-pound Darian Varner was second on the team with seven tackles for loss, Zach Gill is a 295-pounder, and 300-pound Demerick Morris is one of the team’s bigger bodies inside. Now the front has to get to the quarterback.

Jordan Magee is one of the better pass rushers and top tacklers at one outside linebacker spot, Kobe Wilson is a quick 215-pound hitter in the middle, and there are enough options and help from the transfer portal – Jacob Hollins is a promising backup from Fresno State and Illinois before that – to form a solid corps.

Temple Owls: Keys To The Season, Top Game, Top Transfer, Fun Stats NEXT

Former Georgia Bulldog D’Wan Mathis wins starting QB job at Temple

Quarterback D’Wan Mathis transferred to Temple from UGA.

Former Georgia football quarterback D’Wan Mathis has been named the starter for the Temple Owls for the second consecutive season.

Mathis threw for 1,223 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions last season for Temple. The Owls begin their 2022 season against Duke on Sept. 2.

Temple is coming off a tough 3-9 season. The Owls won three of their first five games in 2021, but lost all of their remaining contests.

D’Wan Mathis and Temple should have a better season in 2022.

Mathis has been named the opening day starter for three consecutive seasons. He was named Georgia’s starting quarterback ahead of the 2020 college football season, but lost his job to Stetson Bennett in his first career start against Arkansas. Mathis is a former four-star recruit from Oak Park High School in Oak Park, Michigan.

It seams like a long time ago when the Georgia Bulldogs started quarterback D’Wan Mathis to open the 2020 college football season. Brett Rojo-USA TODAY Sports

He was Georgia’s co-winner of the David Jacobs Award in 2019 for overcoming his scary brain cyst. We wish him luck with Temple this season.

Temple football announced Mathis as the starting quarterback via Twitter:

Michigan State football transfer chooses Temple

MSU football WR transfer has committed to Temple

Ian Stewart made the decision earlier this offseason to transfer out of the Michigan State football program. Stewart was a 3-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class for MSU. Stewart was a bit of a tweener at Michigan State, playing both the tight end and wide receiver positions in East Lansing and he could never really find his footing.

A fresh start for Stewart is something that could immensely help his playing career, and that is what he is going to do. Stewart made his decision and will be heading to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to play for the Temple Owls.

Navy vs Temple Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

It’s been a rough and disappointing season for the Midshipmen, but this is where they should finally get to have a little fun before getting ready for the Army game a few weeks later.

The running game hasn’t been dominant like it needs to be, but it rolled East Carolina for 345 yards in the 38-35 battle and hit the 300-yard mark in the stunning win at Tulsa three weeks ago.

Temple doesn’t score.

It can’t move the chains, it doesn’t control the clock, and it hasn’t scored more than ten points since mid-October and hasn’t scored more than 14 in any of the last six games.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Temple Will Win

This will have to be Temple’s bowl game.

The offense fall off the map over the second half of the season in blowout after blowout, but the defense has the ability to get into the backfield and it should be able to hold up reasonably well against the Navy style.

It’s not like the Midshipmen are pushing Georgia for defensive stats. The run D is fine, but the O isn’t getting enough yards – there’s no passing game – and Temple should be able to move the ball better than it has in weeks.

It’ll get to 300 yards for the first time since early October, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Navy will always have the ball.

The running game will grind things down, but that will keep Temple in the game just enough to make this interesting. However, Navy will own the clock in the second half as it keeps the ball for two long marches to put this away.

Temple vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The Owls haven’t had a whole lot go their way since the win over Memphis five games ago, but it gets a Tulsa team that manages to play up or down to the competition.

The Golden Hurricane pushed Cincinnati to the brink, and then struggled with Tulane. It beat Memphis, and slipped past USF. All four wins were by a touchdown or less, and five of the losses were by eight points or fewer.

Temple has a decent enough pass defense to be a bother, and it’s able to get into the backfield from time to time, but the real key will be takeaways. Tulsa has a huge turnover problem, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Tulsa Will Win

Temple doesn’t score.

The offense has come to a dead stop – it can’t keep things moving.

It’s awful on the ground, there aren’t enough easy third down chances, and it’s not putting points on the board when it does get its shot. It hasn’t scored more than a touchdown in four of the last five games and hasn’t scored more than 14 points in seven of the ten.

Tulsa might have a slew of issues, but it’s got enough of an offense to put this away fast with a few good scoring drives.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The Golden Hurricane are not only playing on Senior Day – the last home game of the year – but they’re still alive for a bowl game. Win this, stun SMU next week, and they’re in.

They’ll take care of Part One without much of a problem – after the first half. Tulsa will go Tulsa and make this difficult on itself with two turnovers, but it’ll pull away late.

Houston vs Temple Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Temple has been flat-out awful.

The offense hasn’t hit 300 yards in any of its last four games, the defense has fallen off a cliff, and it’s having a hard time cranking things up down the field or controlling games.

Meanwhile, Houston is just quietly rolling along.

The AAC might be all Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Cincinnati right now, but the Cougar defense is playing better, the pass rush is among the best in the country, and the offense is coming off of one of its best performances of the season in a 54-42 win over USF.

So what’s the problem?

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Temple Will Win

The Houston offensive line isn’t doing a great job of controlling defensive fronts that can get into the backfield.

Temple might not have much of a pass rush, but it’s not bad at getting behind the line. There’s a big problem against the run, but this might be the week the D gets a bit of a break against a Cougar ground game that sputtered a bit before going off on USF.

The Owls have to rise up and get the passing attack going. It had a few nice moments early in the year, and it’s going to have to push for well over 240 yards to pull this off.

They’re 3-0 when they get to 250 passing yards, 0-6 when they don’t.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Houston is playing too well.

It might not be perfect, and it could use better all-around play from the offensive front, but the world is going to start suggesting that the American Athletic Conference Championship could be a whole lot of fun.

The College Football Playoff-ranked Cougars are going to keep moving up.

Temple vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The Owls can’t get into a shootout, but it can make this interesting by forcing mistakes.

Temple’s offense has been hit-or-miss, but it needs to take advantage of every opportunity. East Carolina has turnover problems – it’s got a major fumbling issue – giving the ball away three times in each of the last three games and multiple times in six of the eight games.

The Temple pass defense has been a plus. That’s partly because teams are spending so much time running the ball on the porous front, but East Carolina would prefer to get throwing and keep things going through the air – it’s not as consistent on the ground.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why East Carolina Will Win

No, Temple really isn’t getting anything out of the offense.

It hasn’t been able to get to 300 yards in any of the last three games, and it’s 0-5 this year when it fails to get there – and 3-0 when it does.

East Carolina doesn’t exactly have a brick wall of a defense, but it’s far, far better than it’s been in past years.

Yeah, it’ll probably give up over 300 yards, but there’s not any Owl running game to worry about, and there should be a whole lot of big things from the offense to make up for any defensive concerns.

Yeah, Temple’s pass defense hasn’t been bad, but try throwing on this group and it’ll work.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

East Carolina will give the ball away just enough to keep Temple in the game, but it won’t be enough to blow the key home win.

A bowl game is still in the mix, but with road games at Memphis and Navy up next and Cincinnati to close, lose, and a bowl likely isn’t happening. The Pirates will get this with good offensive balance to pull away early.

UCF vs Temple Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Things aren’t going all that well if you’re getting whacked by 20 against USF.

Temple has had its moments – beating Memphis was stunningly nice – but it wasn’t even in the game against Cincinnati and it managed to be the FBS team to break an ugly USF losing streak.

The offense isn’t moving the chains, the defense can’t stop anyone from running, and UCF is about to make this as simple as possible.

The Knights came up with a very, very important win over Memphis last week to keep its bowl hopes alive, and they did it by blowing off the struggling passing game and running a finally healthy Isaiah Bowser for 111 yards.

Temple just gave up 421 rushing yards to USF after allowing 279 to Cincinnati.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Temple Will Win

So what’s going right lately for Temple? Not much, but the run D should be able to sell out with UCF not able to do much of anything with the passing attack since QB Dillon Gabriel went out hurt.

Mikey Keene is giving it the old college try, but there’s nothing happening down the field and he has five interceptions since taking over and just four touchdown passes. Joey Gatewood went 2-for-2 with a score against Memphis, but again, this UCF passing attack is a shadow of its former self.

Temple absolutely has to take the ball away. It’s two wins came in the two games it forced multiple turnovers. UCF hasn’t been that bad at holding on to the ball, but it gave it up three times against Cincinnati and twice to Navy in the last four games.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

UCF has yet to come up with a road win, but it was close in the losses to Louisville and Navy.

This is when the defense has to rise up to help the cause. Temple will be better than it’s been in a few weeks – the O will show a little balance – but Bowser will take over the Knight offense and the other side will be just good enough to get off the field on two key late Owl drives.
