Former Rutgers quarterback Evan Simon joins Temple

Evan Simon has transferred to Temple.

After three years as a Scarlet Knight, Evan Simon is taking his talents to Temple. The Mount Joy native entered the transfer portal in November with two years of eligibility remaining. After seeing limited playing time at Rutgers, he will be looking to become a key part of Temple’s offense.

During his time at Rutgers, Simon attempted 168 passes and completed 98 of his attempts. He will finish his Rutgers career with 952 passing yards and five passing touchdowns. While Simon had some good moments, his playing time dropped during the 2023 campaign as Gavin Wimsatt emerged as the starter.

The news of the transfer was broken by Owls Daily on 247Sports.

Although Simon’s time at Rutgers didn’t exactly go as planned, he leaves the program on good terms. In a post on the X app, Simon took the time to thank his coaches and teammates.

In the post, Simon said, “I would like to thank (head) coach (Greg) Schiano, the Rutgers coaches, support staff, and all my teammates for everything they have done for me the last four years. The friendships I have made at Rutgers will last a lifetime!”

As Simon turns his focus to the 2024 campaign, the Owls are hoping he can flash his sophomore form. During the 2022 season, he appeared in a career-high nine games and added 777 yards to his resume. Four of his five career touchdown passes came in that span.

The talented quarterback is the second Rutgers player who has entered the transfer portal to find a new home.

What NFL teams are in attendance for Temple at Rutgers football?

Six NFL teams are in attendance on Saturday night for Temple at Rutgers football.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. –Six NFL teams are at Saturday night’s Temple at Rutgers football game.

There are several Rutgers football players on both sides of the ball who likely will end up in the NFL draft at some point. Defensive end Aaron Lewis, a preseason All-Big Ten selection, has certainly created legitimate buzz about his NFL potential.

Also very much in the mix on the defensive side of the ball to make the NFL are defensive back Max Melton and linebackers Tyreem Powell and Mo Toure.

Left tackle Hollin Pierce has NFL potenttial. Naseim Brantley, who did not play in the season opener, should draw some NFL interest next spring. Transfer portal wide receiver JaQuae Jackson could also intrigue some NFL teams.

Below are the six NFL teams that are att SHI Stadium on Saturday night:

  • Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Miami Dolphins
  • New York Giants
  • New York Jets
  • Philadelphia Eagles
  • Seattle Seahawks

There is also a representative here from the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano wary of Temple: ‘They should have beat us last year’

Rutgers football is wary of Temple.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers football made a bit of a statement this past weekend with a thorough season-opening win over Northwestern. They know that a follow-up this weekend won’t be easy.

And they know that first-hand because last year, Rutgers (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) almost lost at Temple (1-0).

The setting on Saturday night is going to be SHI Stadium, but that won’t change the fact that Rutgers knows firsthand the challenge they face in Temple. Last year, Rutgers was fortunate to squeak out a 16-14 win at Lincoln Financial Stadium.

And this year, the Scarlet Knights know that Temple can be just as big of a challenge.

“They’re a much-improved football team, you can see and they should have beat us last year,” Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said on Tuesday.

“We were fortunate to get out of the stadium with a victory. So we know what we’re in for. You got to have a great week of practice, and it’s a short week, so we really got to bear down and CHOP.”

Last year, Temple quarterback E.J. Warner got his first collegiate start against Rutgers. He certainly impressed.

Temple nearly played the role of spoiler last year. They’ll be looking to get the upset this year.

“I think you can’t really take any team lightly. Any team, honestly, every game on our schedule, it’s a game – we have to come out ready to play. You can’t just come out there and just win the game,” quarterback Gavin Wimsattt said on Tuesday.

“But I think they’re a good team, and we’re going to have to prepare. And,  I think (the) coaches are doing a great job with their game plan and we’re just gonna try to take every day and get better and see what we can do.”

Warner was impressive, going 19-of-32 for 215 yards with a touchdown and an interception. In Saturday’s 24-21 win over Akron, Warner threw for 292 yards with two touchdowns.

The ESPN Matchup Predictor favors Rutgers football against Temple

ESPN thinks Rutgers football will beat Temple on Saturday.

Expectations are high for Rutgers football following a strong showing in Week 1. Rutgers is now favored on Saturday night against Temple, but it by no means a lock according to ESPN.

The Matchup Predictor on ESPN has Rutgers a 70.9 percent to win on Saturday over Temple. Rutgers won their season opener on Sunday, beating Northwestern 24-7 at SHI Stadium.

It was a strong defensive performance by the Scarlet Knights, who were complemented by an offense that didn’t turn the ball over. Rutgers scored on their first three possessions, running out to a 17-0 lead at halftime.

Last year, Rutgers narrowly beat Temple 16-14 at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia). For Rutgers, the road win came after a Week 1 win at Boston College and then a blowout twin of Wagner in their home opener.

Temple showed a lot of resilience over the weekend in their own season-opening win. Down 21-10 at halftime, Temple shut out the Zips in the second half for a 24-21 win.

Rutgers is at a disadvantage, having started the season on a Sunday to accommodate the Big Ten’s broadcast partner, CBS. Temple comes into this game with an extra day of rest, having started their season on a Saturday afternoon.

Former Georgia QB D’Wan Mathis changes positions

D’Wan Mathis is now practicing at a new position after E.J. Warner won the starting job at quarterback

D’Wan Mathis was named the opening game starter at quarterback for the Temple Owls for the second consecutive season to begin the 2022 college football season. However, Mathis, a Georgia transfer, is changing positions for the Owls.

D’Wan Mathis is now practicing at wide receiver. Mathis got off to a slow start to begin the 2022 season. Over Mathis’ first two games he went 14 of 29 for 125 passing yards and did not have a touchdown or interception.

Kurt Warner’s son, E.J. Warner, has impressed in the last two games. Warner has thrown for 388 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Mathis threw for 1,223 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions in 2021 for Temple.

Mathis was named the opening day starter at quarterback for three consecutive seasons. He was named Georgia’s starting quarterback ahead of the 2020 college football season, but lost his job to Stetson Bennett in his first career start against Arkansas. Mathis is a former four-star recruit from Oak Park High School in Oak Park, Michigan.

Greg Schiano saw impact of Rutgers football fans turnout at Temple: ‘Thought it made a big difference…boy did they bring great energy’

Rutgers football head coaches credits fans for helping his team improve to 3-0.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Rutgers football fans stayed to the final whistle on Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, cheering deep and loud until their team emerged with a 16-14 win at Temple.

On the field, and off the field, Rutgers emerged from this road game with a win.

Rutgers had a strong fan turnout at Lincoln Financial Field, filling up roughly two-thirds of the visiting sidelines with fans. It was a solid showing from the Scarlet nation faithful, given that this is the closest away game of the year.

A team spokesman told RutgersWire that the estimate for the Scarlet Knights turnout at the game was around 15,000 fans. Announced attendance was 33,297 for Temple’s homecoming game.

“Thought it made a big difference today. Boy did they bring great energy,” head coach Greg Schiano said after the game.

“I think – I have – not this time (but) back but first time around- we had some tremendous road followings and bowl followings. And that’s what good football teams do. (We) need to get back to that but to do that you got to win. You know fans are people too, right? They need to go watch wins. And that’s what we got to provide. And I’m so happy that they stuck around and were able to sing with the team. That’s what college football’s about.”

Rutgers, with the win, improves to 3-0 on the season. They open Big Ten play on Saturday night at home against Iowa.

Five things we learned as Rutgers claws its way to 3-0 with a win at Temple

Rutgers football won a scrappy (and ugly) game at Temple.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 16-14 win by Rutgers football is not what many projected from Saturday’s game against Temple. But this win – and yes it was ugly – moves Rutgers to 3-0.

And ahead of the start of the Big Ten schedule next week, perhaps that it is all that is needed for Rutgers football. Simply, win and get out of Philadelphia.

That’s it, plain and simple.

It was a rough and sloppy effort from Rutgers football, who started slow but somehow plowed through. A second quarter Pick-6 by Shaquan Loyal proving to be the pivotal play in a game that never really felt like the Scarlet Knights were clicking.

Five things we learned as Rutgers escapes Philadelphia with a 3-0 record.

Rutgers vs. Temple: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Saturday

Injury report, key players, and how to watch Rutgers vs. Temple on Saturday September 16.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights play the Temple Owls on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. ET, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

Rutgers is off to a 2-0 start for the second consecutive season after a dominating victory in Week 2 over an FCS opponent in Wagner. The Scarlet Knights were victorious 66-7 over the Seahawks. They were able to clean up some of the sloppy penalties and mistakes that led to their very tight Week 1 matchup against Boston College. Now they face off with the Temple Owls, a program they have a long history with, in a Week 3 tilt. The Scarlet Knights will look to match their start 3-0 start from 2021.

Temple is not much of a threat to prevent that from happening. They do sit at 1-1 on the season, but the expectations aren’t high on Broad Street in 2022. The Owls have not done much on offense this season. Defensively, they have been very strong on third down – holding opposing teams to a 16 percent conversion rate. Regardless, this should be a nice afternoon and come Sunday evening, the Knights should be 3-0.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

  • Date: Saturday, September 17, 2022
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. ET
  • TV Channel: Big Ten Network (BTN), ESPN+
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch here)

Players to watch:

In his first two collegiate games, the true freshman has two touchdowns on 13 carries, accumulating 122 yards on the ground. He has also added three catches for 43 yards so far this season.

Johnny Langan (Rutgers – TE): Langan is a former quarterback turned tight end. The New Jersey native has been a jack-of-all-trades for the Scarlet Knights, showing flashes in every aspect of the offense. Through two weeks, Langan has three receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown, seven rushes for 42 yards, and has thrown one pass that resulted in a 43 yard touchdown.
