Where ESPN ranks LSU’s 2024 recruiting class at start of July

The Tigers added four commits in June, but they also lost three.

At the start of the month of July, LSU is in a pretty good spot as far as recruiting for the 2024 class.

The Tigers have 18 players committed after adding four pledges in the month of June. Two of them, cornerback [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag] and offensive tackle [autotag]Ethan Calloway[/autotag], are the third and fourth-highest-rated prospects in the class by 247Sports.

It hasn’t all been good news for LSU on the trail, though. It suffered its first three decommitments of the cycle this month in [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag], [autotag]Maurice Williams Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Zion Ferguson[/autotag].

With these changes, LSU’s class now ranks 10th nationally in ESPN’s rankings, dropping three spots since the last update.

ESPN 300 commits: 9 | Previous ranking: 7

SEC rank: 3 of 14
Top offensive commit: TE Trey’Dez Green (No. 99)
Top defensive commit: S Dashawn McBryde (No. 124)

Coach Brian Kelly’s first full class at the helm was among the best in the country. He has the Tigers recruiting at a high level again for 2024, securing his QB last fall in Colin Hurley, a passer with a strong arm who can create on the move and make off-platform throws. Several key pickups are from the important in-state recruiting pool. TE Trey’Dez Green is a big receiving target with elite length, fluidity and a frame to further develop as a red zone threat. Dashawn McBryde has the tools to be one of the Tigers’ next impact defensive backs, as he can be a versatile defender. He has the speed and agility to be a factor in coverage and can also support the run with an aggressive downhill style. LB Kolaj Cobbins and safety Joel Rogers are also among the top five prospects in Louisiana.

The Tigers currently only have two prospects that rank in the top 200 of the 247Sports Composite, though they remain in the mix for a few big-time targets and could improve the class despite it sitting at 18 commits.

For now, however, there’s some work to be done if this team wants to get back closer to the top five in the current cycle.

Where LSU stands in ESPN’s updated 2024 recruiting rankings

LSU added three players to its now 18-man recruiting class in the month of June.

The month of June treated the Tigers well on the recruiting trail.

LSU added a pair of blue-chip players in the secondary to the 2024 class in four-star cornerback [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag] and safety [autotag]Joel Rogers[/autotag]. Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] also secured the commitment of three-star receiver [autotag]Kylan Billiot[/autotag], while receiver [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag] shut down his recruitment.

It wasn’t all good news this month as four-star tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag] decommitted, but LSU remains in a good spot for this cycle as we get into the heat of the summer.

ESPN recently released its updated recruiting rankings for 2024, and LSU’s class sits at No. 7.

ESPN 300 commits: 7 | Previous ranking: 5

SEC rank: 3 of 14
Top offensive commit: TE Trey’Dez Green (No. 105)
Top defensive commit: S Maurice Williams (No. 129)

Brian Kelly’s first full class at the helm was among the best in the country. He has the Tigers recruiting at a high level again for 2024, securing his QB last fall in Colin Hurley, a passer with an arm that can create on the move and make off-platform throws. After signing three four-stars out of Texas, they continue to pull defensive talent out of the Lone Star State, now in ESPN 300 defender Maurice Williams. Several key pickups are from important in-state recruiting pool. TE Trey’Dez Green is a big receiving target with elite length, fluidity and a frame to further develop as a red zone threat. LB Kolaj Cobbins and safety Joel Rogers are among the top five prospects in Louisiana.

Talent acquisition — both through the transfer portal and high school recruiting — has been a strength since Kelly arrived in Baton Rouge. He’ll hope to close things out strong as LSU still has several top uncommitted options on the table.

LSU commit Joseph Stone says his recruitment is shut down

Receiver Joseph Stone was set to take an official visit to Texas this weekend, but now that trip is off.

Four-star 2024 Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes receiver [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag] has been committed to LSU since last July, but that pledge has felt a bit tenuous in recent months.

Stone has taken recent trips to Louisville and UCF with positive things to say about both, and he was set to officially visit Texas, as well, this weekend.

Now, that trip is off. According to On3’s Billy Embody, Stone has officially shut down his recruitment and will instead take an official visit to Baton Rouge this weekend.

It’s been a good week on the recruiting trail for coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the staff. After losing tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag], LSU added three new commitments in defensive backs [autotag]Joel Rogers[/autotag] and [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag] as well as receiver [autotag]Kylan Billiot[/autotag].

Now, the Tigers will also keep Stone — the No. 279 prospect in the 2024 class, per 247Sports — on board. LSU already has 17 commitments, but with a few big-time targets still available, the Tigers will enter the summer with a lot of momentum as they look to add to a class that already ranks in the top five.

Where major recruiting services rank LSU after addition of Joel Rogers

Here’s where LSU’s 16-man class ranks after adding the West Feliciana safety.

The Tigers landed their 16th commitment in the 2024 recruiting class on Monday when 2024 Saint Francisville West Feliciana safety [autotag]Joel Rogers[/autotag] announced his commitment to LSU.

According to 247Sports, the 6-foot, 180-pound Rogers is the No. 304 prospect in the nation and the No. 8 player in the state of Louisiana. The Tigers continue to do a good job of landing in-state talent under [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], and Rogers is the latest pickup.

It hasn’t been all good news this week for LSU as it suffered its first decommitment of the 2024 cycle in tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag]. Still, LSU is shaping up to land a very strong class once again.

Here’s where it sits in the latest recruiting rankings from major services.

LSU facing heavy competition for 4-star receiver commit after official visit slate

It may take some work to keep Joseph Stone in the class.

LSU saw its first decommitment in the 2024 recruiting class on Sunday as four-star tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag] backed off his pledge.

Given the current recruiting landscape, he almost certainly won’t be the last. In fact, it may take a strong push from LSU to maintain the commitment of one of its top prospects in the class.

Four-star Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes receiver [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag] committed to LSU back in July, but he’s kept his recruitment open and continues to take visits. After unofficially visiting UCF, Louisville and Texas earlier in the spring, he’ll have officially visited all three by the end of the month.

Stone checked out UCF and Louisville the last two weekends, and he’s set to head to Austin, Texas, this coming weekend. Those visits reportedly made a positive impression on Stone, who On3 ranks just inside the national top 300.

He’s currently the only receiver in the class, though the Tigers do have some other high-profile options, most notably Alabama prospect [autotag]Cam Coleman[/autotag]. A five-star and Auburn lean according to On3, Coleman will officially visit on June 23.

LSU in the driver’s seat for blue-chip DB as decision day approaches

The Tigers could land a pair of four-star defensive backs this week.

It could be a very good week for LSU’s defensive back class.

One four-star safety is set to commit on Monday in [autotag]Joel Rogers[/autotag], and the Tigers seem to be in a very good spot to land him. But he’s not the only blue-chip prospect at the position they’re trending for.

[autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag], a four-star prospect from Nashville, Tennessee, recently listed LSU among his top five, and he’s set to announce his commitment on Friday.

The list of finalists he released last week was full of big-time programs and also included Georgia, Michigan, Alabama and NC State. Still, LSU is in a great position to land him and is the 96.4% favorite according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

LSU’s 2024 class currently sits at 15 commitments after tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag] became the first player in the class to back off his pledge on Sunday, but with two four-star defensive backs set to potentially join the class, the Tigers remain in good shape.

4-star 2024 tight end decommits from LSU

Tayvion Galloway had been committed to the Tigers since July 23.

Tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag] became one of the first players to join LSU’s 2024 recruiting class last summer, and now he’s the first player to leave the class.

The four-star Chillicothe, Ohio, prospect decommitted from the Tigers on Sunday night. The No. 247 player nationally and No. 11 tight end according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Galloway had been committed to LSU since July 23. He announced his decommitment via his Twitter account

“After reconsideration, I have decided to take a step back and de-commit from LSU,” Galloway said in his post. “My recruitment is now open. Please respect my decision and no interviews at this time.”

LSU signed three tight end prospects in the 2023 class in [autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag], [autotag]Jackson McGohan[/autotag] and [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], and it still has a top-100 tight end committed in 2024 in [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

The Tigers also return true sophomore [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag], who had a breakout season in 2022.

Even with Galloway’s decommitment, LSU still has 15 commitments in the class of 2024, which ranks seventh nationally per 247Sports.

LSU’s tight end outlook is one of the best in college football per On3

After adding two blue-chips in the 2023 cycle to pair with Mason Taylor, the future is bright at tight end for the Tigers.

When coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] got to LSU, it was clear he had a lot of work to do in the tight end room.

Both Kelly and Tigers offensive coordinator [autotag]Mike Denbrock[/autotag], who has worked under Kelly in the past, like to utilize the tight ends in the offense. They run a lot of 12 personnel with multiple tight ends on the field, but LSU’s roster was severely limited at the position.

Now, a year later, that has changed considerably. [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] had a breakout true freshman season. Though his production won’t blow anyone away, his role increased considerably down the stretch and he made some big plays, namely the game-winning two-point conversion catch against Alabama.

The Tigers signed two blue-chip tight ends in 2023 in [autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag] and [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], a signing day flip from Vanderbilt. With four-star [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag] committed in 2024, the future is bright at the position.

On3’s Jesse Simonton ranked the unit ninth in the country entering 2023.

Mason Taylor returns as one of the better tight ends in the SEC in 2023, as the sophomore made a number of big-time plays for the Tigers last season — namely his 2-point conversion to beat Alabama.

LSU would love to run more two-tight end sets in 2023, and now they might have the personnel to do that with more effectiveness after signing a trio of freshmen at the position — led by 4-stars Ka’Morreun Pimpton and Mac Markway.

LSU returns a lot of pass-catchers in 2023, and with players like [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag], [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag], Taylor may not see a huge uptick in targets. Still, he should see an even bigger role as he could become the next great tight end Kelly produces.

LSU in 4-star tight end’s top 12

LSU made the cut for Caleb Odom

Four-star tight end [autotag]Caleb Odom[/autotag] revealed his top 12 schools, and LSU made the cut.

Odom, a Georgia native, is the eighth-best tight end in the class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Brian Kelly’s staff has put a lot of effort into tight end recruiting since arriving in Baton Rouge. [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] was a standout freshman last fall and LSU signed three tight ends in the 2023 class. In 2024, LSU already has a commitment from four-star [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag] and is trending in the right direction with [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

According to On3’s Prediction Machine, Ole Miss in the driver’s seat with Odom. Behind Ole Miss, On3 gives Penn State and Tennessee the next best shot.

It’d be a surprise if he were to eventually end up at LSU, but the Tigers are in a good position with their tight end group, especially if it can close the deal on Green’s recruitment.

LSU makes the top 8 for 4-star 2024 receiver

LSU made the cut for one of 2024’s top wide receivers in JJ Harrell.

While schools make their final pushes for 2023 prospects, the 2024 recruitments are beginning to heat up.

According to 247 Sports, LSU’s 2024 class is currently the country’s best and LSU is positioned well with plenty of its top targets too. One of those targets is four-star wide receiver [autotag]J.J. Harrell[/autotag]. He recently dropped his top eight, and LSU made the cut.

247 Sports has yet to enter any Crystal Ball predictions for Harrell, but On3’s prediction machine currently has Ole Miss and Mississippi State leading for the Mississippi native. LSU’s 2024 class already has two pass catchers with receiver [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag] and tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag].

LSU also remains in a good spot with Louisiana tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

There isn’t a flurry of Louisiana pass catchers in the 2024 class, so Brian Kelly and staff will have to look elsewhere. LSU has a solid group of receivers in its 2023 class, headlined by hometown kid [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag].
