Saints pick a high school quarterback in MLB-style 2025 mock draft

The MLB draft allows players to turn pro directly from high school. The Saints took advantage of this in an MLB-inspired 2025 NFL mock draft:

The MLB draft is coming up soon. To honor this event, Bleacher Report’ Gary Sobleski conducted a 2025 NFL mock draft under MLB rules, and the New Orleans Saints took advantage of the change in format. It’s a fun exercise to get to know some names who could be big in the next few years.

Football players must be three years removed from high school to enter the NFL draft. But MLB prospects can be selected straight out of high school, then make the decision whether they want to go to college or turn pro.

Draft order was determined by Super Bowl odds which left the Saints with the 10th pick. They went with Ohio high school quarterback Tavien St. Clair. St. Clair was one of six high school prospects picked in this exercise. This hypothetical resulted in the Saints drafting a first-round quarterback for the first time since Archie Manning.

I expected to see Bryce Underwood, LSU commit and the top high school prospect in the class of 2025, to be the selection. He was surprisingly picked by the Arizona Cardinals, however, to replace Kyler Murray.

St. Clair, who has committed to Ohio State, is the third-ranked quarterback in the country and the 15th prospect in the nation. Some of the hype around him comes from being so talented without using a quarterback coach. That raw talent is a perfect candidate to sit and refine his technique for a couple of years.

St Clair was described as having “the best arm” at the prestigious Elite 11 camp so he has plenty of talent. In this mock draft, he would be the future of the New Orleans Saints. We’ll keep an eye on his progress in the college game and see where he lands in the real NFL draft in a couple of years.

Ohio State football commit Tavien St. Clair is now a consensus 5-star recruit

An impressive rise in the rankings for the Buckeye’s commit

When Ohio State football took a commitment from in-state 2025 quarterback [autotag]Tavien St. Clair[/autotag], he wasn’t ranked especially high by the recruiting services.

The 6-foot, 4-inch, 225-pounder was initially placed in the 300’s by the 247Sports Composite, which still put him in the 4-star range. Fast forward to now, and the Buckeyes’ future signal caller continues to move north according to recruiting sites.

On3 recently updated its 2025 class, and St. Clair made yet another move up the rankings. With the change, he now is a consensus 5-star prospect, as he’s the No. 2 player with 247Sports, No. 11 with Rivals, No. 15 on ESPN, and No. 15 according to On3. His 247Sports Composite Ranking has him as the No. 9 overall player.

The other two Buckeyes that hold the consensus 5-star ranking are cornerbacks Na’eem Offord and Devin Sanchez. It’s shaping up to be another banner class for the Buckeyes in 2025, and there is still room for more elite players.

Ohio State quarterback commit Tavien St. Clair wins another award

St. Clair continues to dominate this summer. #Gobucks

Although Ohio State football 2025 quarterback commit, [autotag]Tavien St. Clair[/autotag] didn’t win the Elite 11 Finals MVP, he did perform at a high level.

That trend continued during Rivals Five-Star camp, where he dominated during the first day. The 6-foot, 4-inch, 225-pound future Buckeye was named the MVP of his position.

This isn’t surprising at all, as St. Clair has shown many across the nation that he’s one of the top players in the country, if not the best. He’s currently ranked as the No. 14 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, but there has plenty of chatter that he could still make a rise to the top spot.

There has been so much quarterback talent coming through Columbus since Ryan Day joined the staff, and St. Clair is just the next big-time prospect that will be competing in that room.

Tavien St. Clair is focused on bringing four wide receivers to Ohio State

St. Clair is recruiting hard for the Buckeyes. #GoBucks

Recruiting now has changed, it’s not just coaches going after players, the players are also recruiting their friends to join them.

That’s exactly what Ohio State football 2025 quarterback, [autotag]Tavien St. Clair[/autotag], is doing at the Elite 11 Finals. It’s not just signal callers at the event, they need receivers to throw the ball to, and participate in the 7-on-7 tournament towards the end of the events. That means some of the nation’s best pass catchers are with him.

St. Clair has set his focus on four wide receivers that he’s trying to lure to Columbus with him — Dakorien Moore, Vernell Brown, Jaime Ffrench and Phillip Bell, he told 247Sports recruiting insider Tom Loy.

Currently Ohio State has commitments from De’zie Jones and Quincy Porter, but wants to add at least two more receivers in the 2025 class. Any of the four that St. Clair is going after would be a huge recruiting win.

Ohio State quarterback commit Tavien St. Clair earns high praise after day one of Elite 11

Another Ohio State QB is tearing it up at the Elite 11 Camp. #GoBucks

Ohio State football fans are very familiar with the Elite 11 camp. That’s because the Buckeyes have had mulitple former and current players who have won the event.

Justin Fields, C.J. Stroud and Julian Sayin all won MVP honors, and 2025 commit [autotag]Tavien St. Clair[/autotag] is trying to join them. The nation’s No. 14 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings dominated the first day of the event, earning high praise from multiple outlets.

247Sports had St. Clair at their alpha dog, the top performer of the group. His rise from almost unknown prospect to now 5-star status has been impressive, so this showing shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Although he wasn’t named On3’s top player, coming in second isn’t too shabby.

The third of the big three recruiting services, Rivals, didn’t rank the quarterbacks, but did point out that St. Clair was “looking impressive.”

No one should be surprised if St. Clair returns home to Ohio with an MVP award from the top quarterback camp in the country, the Elite 11.

Could Ohio State football land the back-to-back No. 1 overall recruiting prospect?

Could it happen for the Buckeyes? #GoBucks

In the 2024 recruiting cycle, Ohio State football landed the No. 1 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, wide receiver [autotag]Jeremiah Smith[/autotag].

Now that Rivals has updated its 2025 recruiting rankings, the Buckeyes 2025 quarterback commit, [autotag]Tavien St. Clair[/autotag], continued his rise in the rankings. He has gone from a mid-330 ranked player all the way to the No. 14.

Rivals bumped St. Clair up 26 spots to be its No. 11 player and was suggesting that he could unseat USC quarterback commit [autotag]Julian Lewis[/autotag]. Clearly he could have to continue to jump multiple other prospects, but given his significant boost over the last year it doesn’t seem out of the question.

It would be a great feather in head coach Ryan Day’s cap to have consecutive recruiting cycles landing the top player. However, at the end of the day, as long as St. Clair produces in Columbus, no one will care what his ranking was.

A new 5-star group: 247Sports updates its list of best players in the class of 2025

Recruiting outlet 247Sports released its updated list of five-star players in the class of 2025, led by Bryce Underwood and Tavien St. Clair.

As the school year comes to a close, 247Sports has updated its list of five-star players for the soon-to-be seniors in the class of 2025.

Thirty-two players who will be graduating next year are ranked as five-star players, the top of the blue chips of the high school football world. LSU quarterback commit Bryce Underwood maintained his No. 1 spot after impressing the recruiting outlet early this summer, but other spots have shifted.

Tavien St. Clair

The Ohio State quarterback commit, ranked No. 2 by 247Sports, earned lofty praise from the outlet: “No signal-caller has made more of a year-over-year improvement.”

Listed at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, St. Clair completed 70% of his passes last year, according to the outlet. He is ranked No. 16 on the 247Sports Composite rankings, which combines rankings from other recruiting leaders like Rivals and ESPN, showing the development 247Sports perceives in his game.

Underwood has long been widely considered the top prospect in the class, but St. Clair could make a run at being the top QB and player with another outstanding season.

Ohio State reps the top of the class

The Buckeyes must be feeling good seeing this updated ranking. In addition to St. Clair taking the No. 2 spot, two other Ohio State commits are among the top six players in the class.

Star cornerback Devin Sanchez, ranked No. 4, maintains his ranking as the best cornerback in the group. He dominated for North Shore last season and had five interceptions, according to MaxPreps.

He could form a dynamic CB tandem with No. 6 Na’eem Offord, also committed to the Buckeyes. A state qualifier in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, Offord can keep up with any receiver.

247Sports wrote, “There’s plenty of debate behind the scenes as to who should hold the tag of CB1.” That’s no problem for Ohio State.

Zayden Walker

Walker’s new ranking of No. 10 on 247Sports is substantially different from his Composite ranking, No. 21. According to 247Sports, Walker impressed 247Sports with a 52-foot, 5-inch shot put toss and has been recorded running a 4.5-second 40-yard dash.

His power and speed, along with a 6-foot-1, 225-pound frame, places him as the second-ranked linebacker in the class of 2025, behind Jonah Williams at No. 7.

Kaliq Lockett

Kaliq Lockett overtook Caleb Cunningham as the No. 2 receiver in the country, behind Dakorien Moore. Lockett recorded 59 receptions for 1,299 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior and, according to 247Sports, has a 6-foot-7 wingspan. He’s now listed at No. 11 overall in class.

USC’s presence

Only three players have committed to a university in the 11-20 range of the rankings. Those three are defensive lineman Justus Terry, quarterback Julian Lewis and EDGE rusher Isaiah Gibson.

All three are committed to USC.

Terry, ranked No. 12, is listed at 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds. His ranking is lower than the composite ranking, and 247Sports wrote that it wants to see him “improve his game plan as a pass rusher” but has the potential to “be a true difference-maker.”

Lewis, at No. 16, has often been considered the second-best quarterback in the class. This new 247Sports list has it differently. That’s not for lack of performance, as he completed 66% of his passes for 3,094 yards, 48 touchdowns and two interceptions last year.

Gibson is ranked one spot below Lewis, and 247Sports loves him in comparison to peer outlets — he’s still at No. 55 on the composite. He recorded 17 sacks last season.

Massive differences between new 247Sports ranking and Composite ranking

Gibson’s ranking No. 17 on 247Sports and No. 55 on the composite is a large gap, a difference of 38 spots. But that’s not the largest disconnect between industry-wide rankings and 247Sports’ recent analysis.

Auburn commit Malik Autry, a defensive lineman, is ranked 178 on the Composite and No. 29 in the new rankings. 247Sports says this is because he’s able to beat double teams and get into run lanes at his 6-foot-5, 320-pound size. He “might need a developmental year or two, but he projects as the ideal nose,” 247Sports wrote.

The largest gap was the penultimate player ranked five-stars, Jerome Myles — No. 31 on 247Sports’ new list and No. 228 on the Composite. “He checks off box after box for us,” wrote 247Sports, citing his blistering 10.36-second run in the 100-meter dash that broke a 43-year-old record and his performance in the championship game after returning from injury.

As other outlets begin to update their rankings over summer, will we see corresponding rises for Autry and Myles? Or does 247Sports see something others don’t?

Ohio State has three five-star commits in 247Sports new rankings

Ohio State has three commits in 247Sports new rankings #GoBucks

The Ohio State football recruiting class of 2025 is shaping up to be a huge one as evidenced by the updated recruiting rankings released Wednesday by 247Sports. The Buckeyes currently have a dozen commitments and are currently ranked as the number two class in the country for the class of 2025.

The three top dogs in the class are all rated as five-stars according to the updated rankings, with quarterback Tavien St. Clair getting one of the larger bumps from being ranked the No. 6 player in the country all the way up to No. 2. It is not surprising to see him rise up the rankings, as the now five-star plays at a smaller school in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and therefore the exposure isn’t as strong. You can likely credit the rise due to his elite showings during off-season camps.

The other two five-stars are Devin Sanchez, the cornerback from Texas, and Na’eem Offord, the cornerback from Alabama.

Ohio State 2025 quarterback commit bumped up to a 5-star on 247 Sports

That was a quick climb! #GoBucks

247 Sports updated their player rankings for the 2025 recruiting class on Wednesday. The rankings featured 16 players that were rated as five-star recruits, three of which are committed to Ohio State.

The top-ranked defensive player and third ranked player in the class is Devin Sanchez. The star cornerback attends North Shore high school in Texas and committed to the Buckeyes in January.

A month later the Buckeyes landed a commitment from another supremely talented cornerback in Na’eem Offord. He is the fifth ranked player in 247Sports updated rankings.

Joining the ranks as a five-star recruit on 247Sports is Tavien St. Clair. The quarterback out of Bellefontaine high school in Ohio has been committed to the Buckeyes since June.

“St. Clair continues to charge up our board,” 247Sports; Andrew Ivins said. “If you compare the final game of his sophomore season to the final game of his junior season, he looks like a completely different quarterback as he shows much more command. We remain bullish on St. Clair’s imposing build and methodical approach. He set school passing records at Bellefontaine (Ohio) with 3,083 yards and 37 touchdowns.”

Ohio State quarterback commit Tavien St. Clair wins award at Nike Camp

The Buckeyes quarterback machine will continue with St. Clair

In the first event ever for Nike’s “Next One’s” camp, Ohio State 2025 football quarterback commit, [autotag]Tavien St. Clair[/autotag], took home some hardware.

The 6-foot, 4-inch and 210-pound passer is ranked as the No. 4 quarterback and 56th overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and he dominated the competition. Multiple other high-level signal callers were in attendance and St. Clair won the accuracy competition over all of them.

It’s a great sign for the future Buckeye, as many believe that the one aspect of quarterbacking that is hard to coach up is accuracy. St. Clair seems to have plenty of it and will bring that with him to Columbus very soon.

It’s also worth noting that when St. Clair committed to Ohio State, he was an unknown commodity, but has made an impressive rise in the rankings. Kudos has to go out to head coach Ryan Day for identifying an elite in-state talent.
