Why Taulia Tagovailoa’s transfer to Miami makes the most sense

It makes so much sense to see Taulia Tagovailoa end up in Miami to play for the Miami Hurricanes.

On Friday night, news broke that Alabama quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa had entered the transfer portal. Taulia, the younger brother of Alabama star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had hoped to follow in his brother’s footsteps.  But after Tua who was drafted by the Miami Dolphins as the 5th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, many speculated that Taulia would choose to transfer, especially given the talented depth at the quarterback position at Alabama.

With Mac Jones and Bryce Young battling it out for the QB1 spot, it’s not too surprising Taulia entered the transfer portal. While at Alabama, he recorded 9 passes for 100 yards and 1 TD. He only played in 3 games in 2019: against Western Carolina, Arkansas, and Southern Mississippi.

In his junior and senior year in high school, Taulia recorded an impressive 7,504 yards and 71 touchdowns and only threw 13 interceptions for Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama.

But if you have followed either of the Tagovailoa’s stories, you’d know a few things: faith and family are very important to them. So much so that Tua Tagovailoa’s family moved to Alabama from Hawaii to be close to their son who was soon to become a star in Tuscaloosa.

And so, the question remains, where will Taulia end up now?

It makes so much sense to see Taulia Tagovailoa end up in Miami to play for the Miami Hurricanes. Not only would Taulia add to their depth chart, but he would be close to his older brother Tua, and his family.

And for the Hurricanes, it would be a win-win deal, especially after going 6-7 last season. Miami will have D’Eriq King who transferred from Houston for his senior year, and Taulia will have to sit one year before being eligible to play three. That’s if the NCAA transfer rules remain as they are. But regardless, Taulia would sit out this year which would give him more time to improve.

Could Taulia end up elsewhere? Absolutely.

But it would not be surprising one bit to see Taulia end up in the same city following in his brother Tua’s footsteps once again.

Just imagine, two Tagovailoa brothers playing football in the same city: Taulia Tagovailoa taking over as starting quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes while his brother Tua, takes over as QB1 for the Miami Hurricanes.

Only time will tell.

Class: Sophomore

Hometown: Ewa Beach (Hawaii)

High School: Thompson High School

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / N/A overall / No. 11 DT-QB / No. 9 AL

Analysis: Taulia Tagovailoa, in a lot of ways, has become the forgotten man in Alabama’s looming quarterback battle. With the more experienced Mac Jones and freshman phenom Bryce Young expected to be the main competitors, the younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa will have a tough battle ahead of him.

The good news is the Tagovailoa family doesn’t seem to be afraid of competition, and Taulia is more than talented enough to be a good dark horse option at the position.

The former top 200 prospect was forced to burn his redshirt season after his brother went down with a hip injury, but that added experience, while limited, could help him in the long run.

During his freshman season, Taulia completed 9 of his 12 pass attempts (75%) for 100 yards and a touchdown. As long as he sticks around in Tuscaloosa, he’ll have a chance to build on those numbers if he can win the No. 1 or 2 job.

Four-star QB Drake Maye de-commits from Alabama

When Bryce Young committed to the University of Alabama back in Sept. of 2019, people had wondered what that meant for the status of 2021 quarterback commit Drake Maye.

The two gunslingers are from two different recruiting classes, but they’re only a year apart and Young is considered the future at position for the Crimson Tide.

Well on Friday afternoon, Maye made the announcement that he would be backing off his pledge to Alabama in favor of North Carolina, who has really seen its football program grow under national championship-winning head coach Mack Brown.

The news of Maye’s de-commitment wasn’t that much of a surprise, especially considering he’s from Charlotte (N.C.) and his older brother, Luke Maye, is a basketball player for the Tar Heels and his dad, Mark, played quarterback at the university as well.

From Alabama’s perspective, it’s somewhat of a blow considering what could happen with potential transfers. The landscape of college football is changing, and that means a reliable quarterback needs to be added in every recruiting class to keep numbers and depth in line.

Still, Nick Saban and company are in great shape with the current roster makeup at the quarterback position. Of the four scholarship quarterbacks (Jones, Young, Taulia Tagovailoa and Paul Tyson), none of them will be seniors in 2020.

So as long as the transfer portal doesn’t ransack the position, the Crimson Tide should be fine.

For the 2021 recruiting class, Maye is considered the No. 56 overall player, the No. 6 pro-style quarterback and the No. 3 player from the state of North Carolina, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Galu Tagovailoa says Taulia is “ready to compete” for Alabama starting QB job

As originally reported by Christina Chambers of WBRC news in Birmingham, Galu Tagovailoa, the father of Tua and Taulia, announced that he believes Taulia is ready to compete for the starting quarterback job in 2020.

“You have to love competition. Competition is a healthy thing. He knows that. It drives him to get better,” Galu Tagovailoa said. “I think it’s going to be a really good transition. He’s always been known as Tua’s little brother, and it’s a good thing, he talks a lot with his brother, but they talk a lot about how things are going to be and he understands how he has to step up as Taulia as a player and compete.”

This competition should be an interesting one to watch, as Nick Saban and his coaching staff will have a big decision to make.

It seems as if the competition will be between three quarterbacks: Mac Jones, Taulia Tagovailoa and Bryce Young.

There is plenty of time until they start to compete on the practice field, but we can already tell that this isn’t going to be easy on the coaches.

As Galu said, Taulia has always been known as Tua’s little brother. If he wants to be known for his playing abilities rather than who his brother is, he has to put on a show during preseason practices and show that he won’t settle for just replacing his brother.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will be airlifted to Houston in order to continue seeking treatment for his hip injury, which he sustained in the Crimson Tide’s game against Mississippi State.

Tagovailoa’s hip injury, which has been diagnosed as a dislocated hip with a posterior wall feature, is one of numerous injuries he has had to deal with while at Alabama.

However, this is the first one that will cost him a season, and likely a whole lot more.

Recovery time for an injury like this will be a while, and while many rule out a return to the collegiate level, it would not be a wild idea to believe he would.

“For the past 24 hours our medical team has consulted with multiple orthopedic experts across the country, who specialize in hip injuries and surgeries,” said team doctor Lyle Cain, “Based on that research, Tua is being flown to Houston tonight to be evaluated and is scheduled to have hip surgery Monday,” Cain said.

As ESPN reported, this is Tagovailoa’s second surgery of the season, the first one being the tight-rope surgery to repair a high ankle sprain he suffered during Tennessee.

This surgery on his hip will be more serious and come with a much longer recovery time.

The Alabama Crimson Tide defeated SEC West rival, Mississippi State with a final score of 38 – 7 to advance their record to 9-1 on the season.

With Tua Tagovailoa being carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance, Mac Jones stepped in and kept the offense alive, but didn’t live up to the hype left behind by Tagovailoa.

Jones completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 94 yards and no touchdowns.

Overall, the offense didn’t add any notable stats in the second half without Tagovailoa.

The only points scored in the half was a 22-yard field goal from Joseph Bulovas.

The defense stayed strong throughout the entire game, only allowing a lone touchdown early in the first quarter.

Next week the Crimson Tide will welcome Western Carolina into Bryant Denny Stadium, a game that will mean more now that Nick Saban will have to readjust on both sides of the ball to account for injuries.

The Alabama Crimson Tide leads the Mississippi State Bulldogs 35 – 7 at the half in a game that has displayed Alabama’s dominance on both sides of the ball.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was carted off of the field with an apparent hip injury late in the second quarter, has completed 14 passes off of 18 attempts for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

Mac Jones has stepped up in place of Tagovailoa and will fill his role for the time being if he is able to returns later in this game.

Najee Harris has been the star of the Alabama offense in the first half as he has scored four total touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving.

Wide receiver Jerry jeudy has an impressive 106 yards in the first half off of six receptions.

The defense has also been a major factor for Alabama in this game as Shane Lee came up with an early interception to help the Tide gain a two possession lead.

They have held Mississippi State’s quarterback, Tommy Stevens, to only 28 yards and their star running back, Kylin Hill to only 24 yards on the ground.

Alabama will kickoff to start the second half in Starkville.
