Twitter reacts to the 2023 A-Day game

Auburn fans were excited to be watching their Tigers once again.

The weather for A-Day may have been terrible and the game may have ended in a tie, but the Auburn faithful were excited to be watching their Tigers once again.

They got to see glimpses of how the returning players have developed over the offseason and how the newcomers are going to factor in. One player that stood out is quarterback [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag], who started the game with the first-team offense.

He showed off his mobility and threw a beautiful 39-yard pass to [autotag]Tar’Varish Dawson[/autotag] en route to being named the offensive MVP. Ashford finished with 38 yards rushing and one touchdown plus the 39-yard pass.

Here are the top Twitter reactions to the game.

The full Auburn depth chart for Week 11

Here’s the team that will be defending Jordan-Hare stadium against the Aggies on Saturday:

Auburn is coming off one of its best games of the year in a close loss to Mississippi State. That doesn’t mean there won’t be changes, however.

Some of those changes, though, have unfortunate circumstances. Offensive lineman Austin Troxell recently suffered a season-ending injury, so the offensive line has been shaken up. On top of that, the imminent transfer of Tar’Varish Dawson has the wide receiver lineup different than most are used to seeing.

With all that in mind, here is the team Auburn is set to trot out against Texas A&M in interim coach Cadillac Williams’ first game at Jordan-Hare:

BREAKING: Auburn receiver Tar’Varish Dawson hits the transfer portal

Make that three consecutive days of Auburn transfers:

Tic tac toe, three in a row.

Another Auburn player has hit the transfer portal — this time, it’s freshman wide receiver [autotag]Tar’Varish Dawson[/autotag]. Dawson is the third Auburn player to enter the portal in as many days, following the footsteps of defensive lineman Zykeivous Walker and wide receiver and tight end Landen King.

Dawson has only seen playing time in two games this year, and neither of them was against Power 5 competition. He’s had a reception each against Mercer and San Jose State, so far only amassing 30 yards in receiving. With that in mind, it makes sense that Dawson would look to enter the portal to get more playing time, but the timing of all three players (so far) could be alarming for Auburn fans, as the Tigers’ depth would run thinner if more players were to follow.

Dawson was listed on Auburn’s depth chart against Arkansas this weekend and was thus slated to be with the team in Jordan-Hare, but it is currently unclear if he will still do so on Saturday.

Where are they now?: The curious case of Auburn’s 2021 signing class

The nation’s No. 18 signing class from 2021 is only halfway standing after the news of Landen King, A.D. Diamond, and Tar’varish Dawson’s intent to transfer.

Auburn head coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] was dealt a great hand to open his tenure on the Plains.

Just one week before the official announcement of the Harsin hire, Auburn signed the nation’s No. 18 recruiting class according to 247Sports, a class that consisted of 18 high school players, six of whom were rated as four-star prospects.

However, just two years after faxing their National Letter of Intent to the university, half of those signees that were expected to be the future of the program now appear on another program’s roster. The number has grown now that tight end [autotag]Landen King[/autotag] has announced his intent to enter the transfer portal. One day later, wide receiver [autotag]Tar’varish Dawson[/autotag] and cornerback [autotag]A.D. Diamond[/autotag] also announced that they were looking to test the transfer waters once the season concluded, moving the number of departures from seven players to ten in just two days.

Why is that? No one can for sure say at this time, but it is definitely a concern. Not only are the departures concerning, but the lack of production from this class is worrisome.

The headliner from this class is running back [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag], who has been given an opportunity to complement Tank Bigsby in the running game. Outside of Hunter, defensive players such as [autotag]Dylan Brooks[/autotag], [autotag]Cayden Bridges[/autotag], [autotag]Marquis Robinson[/autotag], and [autotag]Joko Willis[/autotag] have combined to play just 236 of Auburn’s 513 defensive snaps according to Pro Football Focus. Between those four players, Bridges is receiving the bulk of those snaps with 173.

With the recent news of King, Dawson, and Diamond’s departure, Auburn Wire is here to break down Auburn’s 2021 signing class, and who is still a part of it.

Who is still here? Who has gone on to play for another program? All of that information is below:

New list names potential Auburn breakout candiates

Who do you think will emerge as a star player this season for Auburn?

You never know which players could break out over a season, but there are certainly some that show more potential than others.

A new list by the Montgomery Advertiser has done its best to try and predict who these players will be, and it’s never an easy feat. Here is the criteria the new list uses to try and determine which Auburn players could shine under [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag]’s second year with the Tigers:

“There are two schools of thought for applicable returners. The first type: someone who hasn’t gotten much playing time in previous years and who Auburn needs to step up with increased reps. The second type: someone who’s already a regular but underachieved last season.”

There will certainly be an influx of these types of players coming to play for Auburn in Bryan Harsin’s second year. Following the departure of Bo Nix and a massive wave of transfers out of the program following Bryan Harsin’s controversy, plenty of players will have the chance to make their mark on the program as Harsin will desperately look to prove his worth and keep his job at the end of the 2022 season.

Here are the six players the list names as potential breakout stars for this— upcoming college football season:

Spring Football Preview: Projecting an unproven receiver group

One group that has more questions than answers right now.

No unit on the offensive side of the ball has been hit harder this offseason than the wide receiver room for Auburn.

The Tigers knew they were losing Demetris Robertson after his senior season, but Kobe Hudson, Caylin Newton, Elijah Canion and Ja’Varrius Johnson all entered the transfer portal.

These departures mean Auburn must replace 105 receptions, 1,420 yards and 10 touchdowns from last years group, which struggles were well documented.

It will be up to wide receivers coach Eric Kiesau to help develop the receivers on the roster into solid targets for whoever wins the quarterback job. Here is a look at the wide receivers on the roster who will look to take advantage of the open opportunities.

Ja’Varrius Johnson reportedly enters transfer portal

Ja’Varrius Johnson is leaving town. Third WR to leave Auburn this offseason

Auburn may be losing another wide receiver.

According to On3.com’s Matt Zenitz, Auburn receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson has entered the transfer portal. The move would make him the third Auburn wide receiver to enter the portal this offseason, following Kobe Hudson and Elijah Canion, who transferred to UCF and Purdue, respectively.

Johnson appeared in 12 games for Auburn last season, catching 19 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns. His departure leaves Auburn with eight scholarship receivers on the roster in Shedrick Jackson, Malcolm Johnson Jr., Ze’Vian Capers, J.J. Evans, Tar’Varish Dawson, Omari Kelly, Camden Brown and Jay Fair.

Of them, only Jackson (40), Johnson (six) and Capers (six) have caught a pass in college.

Multiple Auburn Tigers out for game vs Alabama State

Auburn will be without two starters and some depth players during their matchup with Alabama State.

Auburn will be without two starters and three depth players during their matchup with Alabama State today at 11 am CT.

Starting wide receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson is not going through pre-game warmups, per Christian Clemente of Auburnsports.com.

Shaun Shivers is not expected to play today as well. Tar’Varish Dawson will dress out but is not expected to play. Expect to see a lot of Jarquez Hunter, Jordan Ingram, and Sean Jackson to fill in during the second half. Cornerback Jaylin Simpson will dress out but is not expected to have a full workload due to a groin injury.

Cornerback Ro Torrence will not see the field today.

Dreshun Miller, the talented transfer from West Virginia, is expected to fill in for Simpson and Torrence.

Tar’varish Dawson is becoming a name to watch this fall

Auburn freshman wide receiver Tar’varish Dawson is making a statement this fall.

Tar’varish Dawson is emerging as the darling of Auburn football’s fall camp.

The freshman wide receiver as come in and is competing for playing time. His speed, quickness, and ability to make plays has really generated some conversation about the young athlete.

Auburn offensive coordinator Mike Bobo talked about how valuable that speed can be.

“Right now, you can see that the guy has speed,” Bobo said to the media Monday. “He’s made some tough catches in practice. He has won some with his speed. Right now it is just learning what to do. He’s got talent and it’s our job as coaches to figure out what he can do to put him in a position to be successful. I like his attitude. He likes football. He likes to compete.”

His ability was seen at the high school level. Dawson was a 4-star recruit out of Lehigh Acres, Florida. He was listed as an athlete due to his ability to potentially play cornerback at the next level as well. Clearly, Auburn sees him as a pass-catcher.

“I think it was a good sign for Auburn that he signed, we recruited him when we got here but was committed to Auburn,” Bobo said. “I’ve known about him since we got back into the league when I was at the other school last year. We recruited him there. I talked to him on the phone and what I liked about him was his ability to run. He has elite speed, obviously, he has track times, but he has game-changing speed that can create explosive plays off of his ability.”

A common theme that we are hearing from this coaching staff is the nonstop devotion to making sure the staff makes each individual player better. Bobo shared a conversation that he had with Dawson about how he could improve this fall camp.

“We had a conversation this morning, him and I, about what he needs to keep working on to improve and that is to focus on what his coach tells him on a daily basis and not get ahead of himself and try to improve as a receiver each and every day.”

All offseason, there was a nonstop conversation about how open the wide receiver position was this season for the Tigers. Dawson heard that message loud and clear and he may be a starter in the offense.

Auburn recruiting: Two commits shine on both sides of the ball

Scoring four touchdowns in one game is impressive. But to score them the way Tar’varish Dawson did Thursday night, is remarkable.

Scoring four touchdowns in one game is impressive. But to score them the way Tar’varish Dawson did is remarkable.

The 4-star athlete powered Lehigh Acres to a 35-7 win over Cypress Lake Thursday night. The 5-feet-10, 175-pound Dawson had two receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and two interceptions, with one being a pick six.

He now has 17 carries for 155 yards and two scores on the season to go with 15 receptions for 216 yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions while at corner.

He wasn’t the only future Tiger making plays on both sides of the ball either, as Lee Hunter had a monster night of his own.

Hunter, a 4-star defensive tackle and Auburn’s highest ranked commit, totaled 12 tackles, four tackles for loss and two scores.

While both came on the offensive one it was the second that stole the show.

The 6-5, 292-pound Blount caught a 20-yard touchdown reception to seal the 38-20 victory over Robertsdale.

Dematrius Davis may not have may plays on defense but had another impressive game. The 4-star prospect connected on 14 of his 21 attempts for 212 yards and a score as well as 86 yards and three more touchdowns on the ground.

Armoni Goodwin, 4-star running back commit, had another big game for Hewitt-Trussville, rushing for 163 yards and a touchdown as they fell to Hoover 29-28.

Ahmari Harvey, 4-star safety commit, had an interception for Florida State University School.

Other Notes

After planning to announce his college decision this Saturday, 4-star defensive end Jeremiah Williams has decided to push back his decision.

Despite this postponement, Auburn could still get some huge news this weekend, just in basketball.

Jabari Smith, the No. 5 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite and the top power forward, will announce his college decision on Friday at 3:00 pm EST. Auburn is competing with Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, North Carolina and Tennessee for his commitment.

Five-star defensive back Ga’Quincy “Koolaid” McKinstry announced that he will be committing on Oct. 25. Auburn, Alabama and LSU are the final schools.

Auburn is currently the favorite to land all three players in the 247Sports Crystal Ball.
