Report: Auburn safety no longer on roster

The Tigers will be down a man in the defensive backfield ahead of fall camp.

Auburn will be without one of its key defensive backs heading into fall camp.

Brian Stultz of Auburn Rivals reported Thursday afternoon that safety [autotag]Cayden Bridges[/autotag] is no longer listed on Auburn’s roster. The report was confirmed by Matt Cohen of AL.com. At the time of this post, there is no reason given for the departure.

Bridges played in 12 games over his two-year career, with all 12 games coming in the 2022 season. As a redshirt freshman, He recorded 19 tackles with a pass deflection. His most notable play was his fumble recovery in the endzone of Auburn’s 17-14 overtime win over Missouri.

According to Pro Football Focus, Bridges missed just three tackles and allowed two touchdowns in 386 snaps. His final grade of 63.9 was the 10th-highest among returning defensive players.

Cohen also pointed out that there are only two players from the 2021 signing class remaining on the roster: [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] and [autotag]Garner Langlo[/autotag]. [autotag]Zion Puckett[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaylin Simpson[/autotag] will look to anchor the safety position this season.

Bridges is looking to create a bigger role for himself after appearing in every game last season. That experience could be the separator between him and the rest of Auburn’s young safeties who have plenty of talent but lack those key reps.

He and [autotag]Zion Puckett[/autotag] are likely the second-team safeties behind the duo of [autotag]Jaylin Simpson[/autotag] and [autotag]Zion Puckett[/autotag].

Gilbert played sparingly in his first season but looked improved in spring practice and is looking to become a key reserve in the secondary this season.

He is behind [autotag]Jaylin Simpson[/autotag] and [autotag]Zion Puckett[/autotag] at safety but is in contention to be the next man up with [autotag]Cayden Bridges[/autotag]. Those four are Auburn’s most proven options at safety and lead a group that is talented but inexperienced behind them.

Former Auburn OT Colby Smith announces transfer destination

He appeared in one game during his time at Auburn.

Former Auburn offensive tackle [autotag]Colby Smith[/autotag] has found his new home and he will be sticking in Alabama. The Reidsville, North Carolina native announced his commitment to Troy Tuesday night on Twitter.

The 6-foot-8, 320-pounder spent two seasons on the Plains with his only game action coming against Western Kentucky last season.

He was a member of Auburn’s 2021 recruiting class which has seen 15 of its 18 members leave the program. The only players left are running back [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag], offensive lineman [autotag]Garner Langlo[/autotag], and safety [autotag]Cayden Bridges[/autotag].

Of the 10 Auburn players to enter the portal during the second window, Smith is the fifth to announce his next school, joining Kameron Brown (Chattanooga), Jeffrey M’Ba (Purdue), Desmond Tisdol (FAU), and Tar’Varish Dawson (Colorado).

Where are they now?: The curious case of Auburn’s 2021 signing class

The nation’s No. 18 signing class from 2021 is only halfway standing after the news of Landen King, A.D. Diamond, and Tar’varish Dawson’s intent to transfer.

Auburn head coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] was dealt a great hand to open his tenure on the Plains.

Just one week before the official announcement of the Harsin hire, Auburn signed the nation’s No. 18 recruiting class according to 247Sports, a class that consisted of 18 high school players, six of whom were rated as four-star prospects.

However, just two years after faxing their National Letter of Intent to the university, half of those signees that were expected to be the future of the program now appear on another program’s roster. The number has grown now that tight end [autotag]Landen King[/autotag] has announced his intent to enter the transfer portal. One day later, wide receiver [autotag]Tar’varish Dawson[/autotag] and cornerback [autotag]A.D. Diamond[/autotag] also announced that they were looking to test the transfer waters once the season concluded, moving the number of departures from seven players to ten in just two days.

Why is that? No one can for sure say at this time, but it is definitely a concern. Not only are the departures concerning, but the lack of production from this class is worrisome.

The headliner from this class is running back [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag], who has been given an opportunity to complement Tank Bigsby in the running game. Outside of Hunter, defensive players such as [autotag]Dylan Brooks[/autotag], [autotag]Cayden Bridges[/autotag], [autotag]Marquis Robinson[/autotag], and [autotag]Joko Willis[/autotag] have combined to play just 236 of Auburn’s 513 defensive snaps according to Pro Football Focus. Between those four players, Bridges is receiving the bulk of those snaps with 173.

With the recent news of King, Dawson, and Diamond’s departure, Auburn Wire is here to break down Auburn’s 2021 signing class, and who is still a part of it.

Who is still here? Who has gone on to play for another program? All of that information is below:

Players who raised their stock during fall camp

Here are the seven players who raised their stock the most during fall camp.

Every year some players will have impressive fall camps and this year was no different for Auburn.

With fall camp all but over, let’s take a look at some of the players who boosted their stock the most during fall camp. While some of these players are now the favorites for a starting spot, some are now key backups.

The group includes several veterans who have started to put it together as well as some youngsters and even a couple of newcomers who look like players Auburn will be able to count on this season.

Here is a look at the seven players who boosted their stock the most as well as some players who deserve recognition for their progress.

2022 Auburn football preview: Safety

Zion Puckett is the leader of a talented group at safety for Auburn.

Auburn will be without a former leader in [autotag]Smoke Monday[/autotag] at safety but [autotag]Zion Puckett[/autotag] is ready for his turn to be the leader of the group.

He was Auburn’s No. 2 safety last season and is the undisputed top dog this year. While the second starting spot is up for grabs, the secondary coach [autotag]Zach Etheridge[/autotag] has several interesting options in [autotag]Cayden Bridges[/autotag] and newcomers [autotag]Marquise Gilbert[/autotag] and [autotag]Craig McDonald[/autotag], who both have plenty of experience.

Another key player is [autotag]Donovan Kaufman[/autotag], who will spend time at both nickel and safety and is once again looking to create disruptive plays, something he excelled at doing last season.

Going into the 2022 football season, Auburn Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

[autotag]Cayden Bridges[/autotag] appeared in three games on special teams as a freshman and primarily worked on the scout team last season. Entering his sophomore season he is contending for a starting spot at safety.

Depth Chart Overview

Bridges was Auburn’s lowest-rated signee in the 2021 class but is now contending for a starting job at safety as a sophomore.

He has drastically improved himself physically and mentally since arriving on campus. He is listed at 202 pounds now, 21 pounds heavier than last fall.

He saw plenty of first-team reps during spring practice due to his familiarity with the defense over newcomers like JUCO transfer Marquise Gilbert, who is his main competition for the starting spot.

The two are competing to start alongside returning starter Zion Puckett and regardless of if he wins the job, Bridges is set to have a larger role than last season.

Spring Football Preview: Projecting the safety position

We move on to the secondary and the safety positional outlook.

After reviewing the front seven of the Tigers defense, focus now shifts to the secondary. Much like other spots on the team, they are losing some production from the 2021 team.

Auburn will be without one of the secondary’s leaders in Smoke Monday but there are still some promising players in the safety room.

Starter Zion Puckett is back, and Auburn added Marquis Gilbert, the top JUCO safety in the class to the mix.

Auburn also returns Donovan Kauffman, who made several big plays and will look to be more consistent in his second season at Auburn. With several players competing for the second spot, this group will be interesting to watch during spring practices, here is a look at the group.

Auburn freshmen impact (No. 14: Cayden Bridges)

This is the third article in a series detailing and ranking the incoming Auburn freshmen’s impact in 2021.

Name: Cayden Bridges

Position: Saftey

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 190 lbs

Hometown: Magee, Mississippi

High School: Magee

Twitter: @03Cayden

His impact in 2021: Virtually non-existent, at least this season. Bridges had 52 tackles, six TFL, four interceptions in his senior season.  He also caught 44 passes for 606 yards and seven touchdowns. He will also play baseball for the Tigers. He is a talented athlete. However, with Auburn’s depth at the safety spot, Bridges should be a 2022 role player at best, especially with other incoming freshmen Ahmari Harvey and Vanderbilt transfer Donovan Kaufman sitting above him currently on the depth chart.
