Auburn releases depth chart for TransPerfect Music City Bowl

Auburn is lacking depth at several spots for the Music City Bowl.

After a couple of weeks off, Auburn football is set to return to action on Dec. 30 when they play Maryland in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl.

Auburn’s roster will look quite different from the last time they took the field after 12 players have entered the transfer portal and others have opted out to prepare for the NFL draft.

Perhaps the biggest change comes at the wide receiver position where the Tigers have lost [autotag]Ja’Varrius Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Omari Kelly[/autotag], [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag], and [autotag]Malcolm Johnson Jr.[/autotag] to the portal, and are now only listing two positions after having three all season.

Some key opt-outs include starting cornerbacks [autotag]D.J. James[/autotag] and [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag] and starting defensive tackle [autotag]Marcus Harris[/autotag], all of whome [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] said he does not expect to play.

One player who hopes to play is starting safety [autotag]Jaylin Simpson[/autotag], who has already accepted his invitation to the Senior Bowl. He has been battling a hamstring injury and his health will determine if he is able to play in the game, Freeze said.

Here is a look at the full depth chart for Auburn’s final game of the 2023 season.

Safety Marquise Gilbert has entered the transfer portal

Gilbert appeared in 10 games during his time at Auburn.

He joins defensive linemen Stephen Johnson, [autotag]Enyce Sledge[/autotag], Jack linebacker [autotag]Stephen Sings V[/autotag], wide receivers [autotag]Omari Kelly[/autotag], [autotag]Malcolm Johnson Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag] and tight end [autotag]Tyler Fromm[/autotag] in the portal.

Depth Chart Overview

Kelly appeared in all 12 games last season but in a limited role and only had three receptions. He is ready to push for an increased role but it is hard to tell if he will be able to get one with all of the newcomers. He is likely the fourth option at the wide receiver z spot but he has the potential to move up the depth chart and become a rotational player.

Kelly also got plenty of experience on special teams last year and that could once again be a way for him to contribute.

Auburn in final eight for 2023 wide receiver from Florida

The Tigers are one of eight finalists for wide receiver William Fowles.

On Monday, 2023 wide receiver William Fowles listed his final eight schools on Twitter and the Auburn Tigers were one of the eight schools listed. Other schools included were Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Florida State, Michigan State, Florida, and South Florida.

In his junior season at Dade Christian, he hauled in 47 catches for 1,100 receiving yards. Along with those jaw-dropping numbers, he also found the end zone 19 times. In the best game of his high school career, he netted seven receptions for 204 receiving yards and one touchdown.

The Tigers could certainly use Fowles at the wide receiver position in 2023. Wide receiver coach [autotag]Ike Hilliard[/autotag] is trying to build a receiving room that is one of the best in the Southeastern Conference. In the 2022 class, Auburn added wide receivers Omari Kelly, Camden Brown and Jay Fair. All three have the ultimate opportunity to earn a starting spot entering the fall. The coaching staff could certainly use open competition to lure in a guy like Fowles.

William Fowles’ Recruiting Profile

Breaking down five newcomers who could make an impact for Auburn in 2022

The top five newcomers who can make a serious impact this season.

There are five freshmen to keep an eye on this season. Two offensive players and three defensive players are at the very top of our list. All five were highly recruited out of high school and will more than likely be featured abundantly over the course of the spring.

Omari Kelly, Wide Receiver

Omari Kelly was regarded as a four-star WR by 247Sports. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, he has played against some of the best competition in the state. Within the past few months, the Tigers have lost wide receivers Kobe Hudson and Javarrius Johnson via the transfer portal. They also lost Demetris Robertson (graduated). The three ranked No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 respectively in receptions.

This makes Kelly’s impact that much larger for the Spring. At his high school, Kelly ran track and field. The Tigers could definitely use someone that has world-class speed. It will be interesting to see how Kelly develops over the Spring. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he were in the rotation for a starting role in the Fall.

Micah Riley-Ducker, Tight End

Micah Riley-Ducker is a 6’6 Tight End out of the state of Nebraska. 247Sports has him ranked as the No. 19 tight end in the class. Former Auburn TE JJ Pegues recently transferred to Ole Miss so that makes his impact just as large. His frame and skillset should definitely have him in the mix to earn playing time for the Fall.

Next, we check on the defensive players to watch
