Auburn reserve wide receiver enters transfer portal

J.J. Evans was a 2020 recruit for the Tigers.

An Auburn wideout who was not expected to play in 2022 has entered the transfer portal.

Sophomore J.J. Evans, who has acted as a reserve wide receiver and has yet to play a down for Auburn football across two years with the program so far, has entered the transfer portal according to his Twitter.

Evans was a four-star wideout coming out of high school, ranked on 247Sports as the sixth best wideout in the state of Alabama and the 169th best prospect in the nation overall for the class of 2020. He helped his high school team, the Montevallo Bulldogs, reach the 4A playoffs and caught 18 touchdown passes as a junior. On top of football, Evans also played basketball in high school.

Evans did not say where his potential transfer destination is, but thanked coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] and his staff in his goodbye message and praised Auburn for helping him grow and surrounding him with great teammates.

Auburn running back sidelined for eight to ten weeks

Hunter should be ready to go by fall practice.

On Friday evening, Al.com’s Tom Green reported that [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] will be out for eight to ten weeks. He underwent a minor procedure to clear up some damage in his leg. Head Coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] announced that the procedure would cause Hunter to miss the rest of the spring.

Last season, Hunter looked very impressive. In his freshman campaign, he carried the ball 89 times for 593 yards and 3 Touchdowns. The Mississippi native split time with other running backs [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] and [autotag]Shaun Shivers[/autotag]. With Shivers transferring to Indiana, his role at running back should definitely increase.

Along with Hunter, receivers [autotag]J.J. Evans[/autotag] and [autotag]Ja’Varrius Johnson[/autotag] have also been sidelined with different injuries. Evans is expected to miss the rest of the spring after receiving a knee procedure recently. Johnson has a lingering hamstring injury, but he should be back sooner rather than later.

For the most part, Auburn will have the majority of its’ running back room returning for next season. The Tigers are bringing in true-freshman [autotag] Damari Alston[/autotag] and walk-on Justin Jones, who transferred from UAB in the offseason. Hunter should have a bigger role for the Tigers in 2022. I certainly think that Auburn has one of the more premier backfields in the SEC and the entire country as well. The combination of Hunter and Bigsby will play a huge role in how well the Tigers perform on offense this season.

With Hunter not sustaining a significant injury, he should be ready to go by the start of fall practice. It will be interesting to see how Auburn’s offense performs to start the season.

Spring Football Preview: Projecting an unproven receiver group

One group that has more questions than answers right now.

No unit on the offensive side of the ball has been hit harder this offseason than the wide receiver room for Auburn.

The Tigers knew they were losing Demetris Robertson after his senior season, but Kobe Hudson, Caylin Newton, Elijah Canion and Ja’Varrius Johnson all entered the transfer portal.

These departures mean Auburn must replace 105 receptions, 1,420 yards and 10 touchdowns from last years group, which struggles were well documented.

It will be up to wide receivers coach Eric Kiesau to help develop the receivers on the roster into solid targets for whoever wins the quarterback job. Here is a look at the wide receivers on the roster who will look to take advantage of the open opportunities.

Ja’Varrius Johnson reportedly enters transfer portal

Ja’Varrius Johnson is leaving town. Third WR to leave Auburn this offseason

Auburn may be losing another wide receiver.

According to On3.com’s Matt Zenitz, Auburn receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson has entered the transfer portal. The move would make him the third Auburn wide receiver to enter the portal this offseason, following Kobe Hudson and Elijah Canion, who transferred to UCF and Purdue, respectively.

Johnson appeared in 12 games for Auburn last season, catching 19 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns. His departure leaves Auburn with eight scholarship receivers on the roster in Shedrick Jackson, Malcolm Johnson Jr., Ze’Vian Capers, J.J. Evans, Tar’Varish Dawson, Omari Kelly, Camden Brown and Jay Fair.

Of them, only Jackson (40), Johnson (six) and Capers (six) have caught a pass in college.
