Former Alabama OL Tanner Bowles transferring to Kentucky

Alabama has seen 12 scholarship players enter the transfer portal. On Thursday, offensive line transfer Tanner Bowles committed to Kentucky.

The first Alabama transfer to announce his decision was offensive lineman Tanner Bowles. On Thursday, Bowles told Kentucky Sports Radio that he was transferring to Kentucky.

This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise as Bowles is a Kentucky native. Despite playing sparingly with the Tide, he was still able to garner enough interest to return home and play for the Wildcats.

In four seasons, Bowles played in 19 games for the Tide. He primarily played on special teams while also serving as a reserve offensive guard. When asked about his decision to transfer from the program, here is what Bowles said:

“Can’t be more appreciative to Coach Saban and all he’s done for me but things happen where you feel like you might not get exactly what you want out of it.”

It will be interesting to see how Bowles fairs along the Cats’ offensive line. Alabama will travel to Kentucky next season in a late-November matchup.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Bowles’ college career as well as other Alabama transfers.

TRANSFER PORTAL TRACKER: Live updates of Alabama players in the portal

Tracking the former Alabama football players who are currently in the NCAA transfer portal.

From Monday, Dec. 5 through Jan. 18, the college football transfer portal madness will buzz uncontrollably as players from around the country hit the open market to find a new place to call home.

Even [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide are not immune from the craziness that is the transfer portal. Currently, 13 members of the Alabama football team are in the portal: eight offensive players, three defensive players and one specialist.

Since there are certain to be more names added to the list, we will periodically update our list as news breaks of newer entries to the portal.

Alabama OL Tanner Bowles to enter NCAA transfer portal

Bowles, a member of the 2019 recruiting class, will hit the transfer portal.

Tanner Bowles, a redshirt-junior offensive lineman for the Crimson Tide, will be entering the NCAA transfer portal, according to Matt Zenitz of On3.

Bowles joined Alabama as a four-star prospect in the 2019 recruiting class. The Kentucky native held offer from other SEC programs and even had a Crystal Ball prediction to commit to Kentucky.

Though Bowles was not a starting member of the offensive line, he did see playing time in all games this season. Whether it be on the line or as a part of the special teams units, he contributed to the team on the field.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Bowles and Alabama football as the 2022 postseason gets underway and more players enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Alabama football countdown: 51 days until kickoff

We are only 51 days from Alabama football kicking off its season. With the cancelled USC game, we’re just not sure who the opponent with be.

Alabama’s opening week game against the USC Trojans at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has been cancelled after the Pac-12 announced its teams would play a conference-only schedule in 2020.

Yes, that was unfortunate news, and, yes, that means the Crimson Tide is looking for a new opponent to open its season on Sept. 5, but, as of right now, that is still the target date to open the season. Until that changes, we’ll continue the countdown to kickoff.

With it now being July 16, we are officially 51 days away from the start!

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Tanner Bowles is currently wearing the No. 51 for Alabama, but another former quarterback protector, offensive guard Evan Mathis, is most famous for rocking the number. Mathis played for the Tide from 2000-04.

On the NFL level, multiple former Alabama linebackers are wearing the number, including Browns linebacker Mack Wilson and Washington linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton.

Height: 6-5 / Weight: 280

Class: Redshirt Freshman

Hometown: Glasgow (Kent.)

High School: Glasgow High School

HS ranking (247Sports): 4-star / No. 290 overall / No. 19 OG / No. 6 KY

HS ranking (Rivals): 3-star / N/A overall / No. 66 OT / No. 10 KY

Analysis: As expected, Tanner Bowles didn’t receive a lot of playing time during his first season in Tuscaloosa. He did play on the field goal team against New Mexico State, but other than that, it was a typical redshirt year.

At 6-foot-5, 280 pounds, Bowles has length but lacks the necessary size to hold up against SEC defensive linemen. If he could get to the 290-plus pound range (and preferably 300-plus), that would help him tremendously as he continues to compete for a spot at guard and tackle.

Versatility is a key component to Bowles’ game, as he could arguably play all five spots along the offensive line, and he does have the frame to carry a lot more weight as he continues to work through Alabama’s strength and conditioning program.

Expect Bowles to continue to work in a rotational role during Year 2 with the hope that 2021 will be an important season.
